Very good video. Maybe a video idea for you: I saw some people upgrading their N64 so that they can use USB-C to power it up and some even went ahead and changed the whole case to something smaller with proper active cooling (with noctua fans). I would love to see you doing something like that!

The RAD2X (Nintendo version) is currently arguably the best balance between simplicity, price, and quality for a plug and play option. However, at 50 GBP plus shipping, it's still rather expensive, and you're not going to get the most out of it with an N64 unless you also RGB mod your system, but it still works quite well even on a non-RGB modded system, so you can start with getting a RAD2X, and if you are playing a lot of N64 games, you can think about upgrading your system with an RGB mod, and the RAD2X will use that RGB signal automatically once it's there, and I'd say the quality is on par with using an HDMI modded system. In some of the comparisons I've seen, HDMI modded systems actually make the image look a little too bright and washed out in a lot of games, but maybe not all HDMI mods are the same in that respect. The RAD2X (nintendo version) will also work great with the Snes, Gamecube, and even some versions of the NES. Most PAL region Gamecubes, and most versions of the Snes, support RGB signals as a stock feature, and any of these Nintendo systems can be RGB modded. Other versions of the RAD2X which work with other systems are also great, especially for systems which already have an RGB signal available as a standard feature, such as with most (or all?) versions of the Playstation, and also the Playstation 2.

If you have an Mclassic go ahead and slap it to this kit. It will push the hispeedido to 1080p and fix the aspect ratio to 4x3.

It seems really close to being great if the menu was just a bit more robust. The original aspect ratio would be better with the option to stretch up to fill the screen more. The color options are goofy too. I'd be interested to see the AV latency introduced as well.

i agree. also i found that the mod won't memorize settings so you have to dial them in everytime the console powers off. as for lag testing, i will check if i can implement something like this in the future. would be very interesting. thanks for the input. :)

N64 Adv V2 by Borti is always OOS. I went for the retro gem for that reason

if you are looking for the "cheapest" HDMI solution for the n64 there is the pico HDMI N64 Project that uses a pico pi microcontroller to convert the analog video to digital and parts cost is arround 7 to 10€

thats just a converter, this is a better option because you can take the digital signal from the console and send it to the tv as digital, so you dont have to convert anything

I installed this too for soldering practice. Beyond that, it's not worth it. Given the effort needed to install it, seems crazy to not go with a 64HD or basic GEM kit for not much more money. Plus the input lag is noticeable compared to the other mods.

Interesting kit. I am a bit surprised the official hispeedio website isn't more informative in terms of the specs of the thing. For $60, this gets you 720p output only. I don't know that I'd recommend this honestly. MAYBE if your a big N64 fan and don't own any other retro consoles that might benefit from the use of a scaler. Cool video non the less. Be sure you check the voltage rails (3.3V and 5V) for shorts to ground before testing. In correctly inserting the jumper pack / exp pack (which is possible with the top shell off) will cause these voltage rail shorts. You DO NOT want to power up the system with those rails shorted. You could damage the RCP / Ram chips.

Thank you for your insightful comment. I agree that there are certainly better offerings but as i mentioned in my conclusion: price is the main factor, quickly followed by the fact that hdmi is the most common connector most people use when not really invested in the retro space. Also good call with the jumper pack!

I wonder if they will upgrade the menu and software to fix current problems with what users really want for a menu and to fix the problems of fitting the aspect ratio to certain of tvs

Idk about putting an inferior hdmi mod into a cherished childhood console especially when the price difference isnt too much. I would like to see you tackle on the ps2 hdmi mod for a video.

So I did this mod, but I cant get it to work. First of all, the N64 should boot without the case, right? I get the red led lighting up and the mod sending a signal to the TV, but its just black. Not sure what to do...

I installed this also about a week ago. Nice to have HDMI now, but i really hate the aspect ratio options. No 4:3 Stretch, real bummer. Looking at upscaler options now, to have a solution for "all" my problems.. :) Still a nice review!

This mod doesn't seem worth it at all, regardless of price. No filters, settings not saving, lacking 4:3 stretching... no no no.

It's fine for what it is. It displays a 4:3 720p image to an HDMI TV so you can play your games. I have used mine for a few months now and think it's great.
