I'm sure a lot of people wonder what the steps for ordering / installing custom countertops are.. I know I was before I went through the process. In this video I take you with me shopping at three different quartz and granite suppliers in Oklahoma City, then after we picked the counter we like most, got it all measured and filmed at the workshop to show how custom countertops get cut buy a big CNC machine. Finally on delivery day, everything gets installed and ended up looking great!!! This kitchen is very close to finished and I'll have the full renovation video out soon!
Special thanks to Carlos at Express Granite in OKC! Be sure to visit / work with them and let them know Mike from Modern Builds sent you :)
(Currently getting their best photos to add to the website gallery, soon it'll be live. I'll add the link here when it is.)

MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

Love to see that you're supporting your local businesses and even helping Carlos out with building that site for him! Hopefully we'll be seeing him again with future projects!! As for the back of the cabinets under the overhang, my father-in-law redid his kitchen and had an island with an overhang and made a board and batten pattern by just throwing a sheet of plywood down and making the battens with some 1x3's. You can make up your own spacing and once you paint over it, it looks amazing!

Something the countertop guys teached me: don't judge the large sheets of material because the typical kitchen top uses much smaller pieces, and the patterns change significance in the smaller size. Carry a cardboard frame that's the width of your counters, and put it up against the large sheet to get a proportionate view. Large patterns suddenly disappear in a smaller view. Smaller patterns become just the right size, etc.

Super cool, I did this recently too and it's nice to see another person's experience. My guys came out and measured very quickly, which made me a little nervous because I had crooked walls. Turns out crooked walls must be a standard thing though (duh), because they actually had to trim the countertops on-site, which looked super intense and something I definitely wasn't expecting. Everything worked out great though, and this is probably all standard stuff to these guys.

Only dangerous to those who cut and work with it. They should use a breathing mask because it little particles that come off from the quartz. Not hazardous in a home, only at the mill.

Quartz is real brittle, compared to granite. Also it has larger pours in the stone it self. Which will cause it to stain easy. When I do my designs. If I use quartz it always goes in the bathrooms. Definitely not the kitchen. But to each their own.
