    Thank you! We did this for my 6 year old and he can finally change his gears after a year in his 20inch bike. It’s frustrating when we are out on rides and he can’t make it up the hill only because he couldn’t shift or we have to stop and change it for him. Worked like a charm!

    Thanks so much for the info -- your gift keeps on giving 3+ years later. As someone else noted, I ordered one without thinking about compatibility w/ the derailleur for my kid's 2007 Trek MT60 (Suntour, which plays nicely w/ SRAM, not Shimano). Worst case scenario, I figured I could order a new Tourney RD for $15-20. But given that I've got a bunch of old parts in my garage, I tried an old ('95-'96) 8-speed Deore XT RD -- works like a charm. It's not ideal, given the long cage w/ 20" wheels, but for the time being, it's leaps and bounds better than the previous setup.

    I have used SRAM grip shift for 20 years with great result super easy to use with very good ergonomic design. Recently get my wife a new bike with Shimano revoshift and find them hard to use as it has a bad ergonomic grip design. Get me a new bike with Shimano rapid fire trigger shifters and I hate them, those things hurt my thumbs and do not shift as fast as the SRAM grip shifters. I am ordering two sets of SRAM MRX Comp Twist Shifter to replaced on both bikes.

    Hi. Thanks for the video and your time. I'm struggling with the same problem on my son's Haro Flightline 20. I've seen your video is already 3 years old. Do you still recommend changing to the TX 30? Do you think the Shimano TX 50 could also be an option? I'm asking you because I'm not quite sure if the problem is the Revoshift or may be the cable curves are too sharp in such a small bike specially at the end where the cable goes into the derailleur. Thanks in advance.

    1:15 Haha, I though the kid's reply was "for you...". :D Anyway, thanks for putting this up man, I've just gotten my daughter a 20" and it's her first with more than one gear. The Revoshift horror they're putting on everything is just impossible for her to handle, plus it moves the break lever further away on the right side. If that wasn't enough, within literally first minutes she's almost crashed when trying to ride upright and rest her weight on the grips only to have it turn...

    My son has the same bike, I found it was not the revo shift that was the problem but the rear end of the derailleur cable housing and the stiffness of the Shimano Tourney RD-TY300 derailleur. The curve required of the cable housing and angle the cable (which causes the plastic ferule to kink over time and drag further) goes in to the derailleur was causing more friction than the grip shifter. I am considering upgrading the rear derailleur to the Shimano Tourney RD-TY500 because it has a pulley in it to route the cable 45 degrees towards the mounting point to the cable does not have to make such a tight semi-circle turn.

  • @alexschicht

    @alexschicht

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrew. Did you manage to solve the problem with the TY300 derailleur? Or you bought the TY500? I've more or less the same feeling about my son's bike (Haro Flightline 20). I'm not sure if the problem is the Revoshift or may be the whole cable that have to make such sharp turns in a small bike... I disassembled everything completely including derailleur, shifter and cables, all parts seems to be good without friction and easy moving, BUT when put together the whole gets rather hard.

  • @andrewscott1253

    @@alexschicht Yes. I changed the gearshift to the one shown in this video and changed the rear derailleur for one that entered from the top and had a pulley in it to turn the table 90 degrees. Both things helped out a great deal, the like is now being used by my 5 year old daughter and she can shift the gears much better than her brother could with the old rear entry derailleur and revoshift.

    Thanks for making this video. I have an old Huffy bike that even I can't shift and I have pretty strong hands. My granddaughter wants to ride this bike but there is no way she can shift gears. For now, she is riding it as a 3 speed since it has a triple front drive system. But that front derailleur is a bit tricky and she always has the chain rubbing the derailleur cage--ugh. She is looking for a different bike, but I may put a trigger shifter on the old Huffy anyway in case someone else in the family wants to ride it, or if I give it away, at least whoever gets it will be able to shift the gears.

    I have a 7 speed and was wondering what would be easier for my child, this shifter or something like the SL-M315 Rapidfire shifter? They are about the same amount. I worry that the as the lever on this one gets pushed further out, that it would be hard for my child's small hand to reach with her thumb. For the rapidfire the reach never changes for each shift. Also they are about the same price.

    Sorry I had idea about these also, I made it try to my son, not the best idea, it's so hard (really..) and finally Dangerous( he has to let the stem..worst than a revoshift (for the front derailleur)… best choice remains the revoshift ( or maybe the gripshift sram) stupid video, lost of time, sorry for the good willing I respect, but, we like to share good info, thank you for understanding. The best I found, is a revoshift left with a mechanism right ( modification 3 to 6 gears) I do not experiment it myself, I get one on a second hand bike, I suppose a personnal customs, but seems really… Simply.. great.. I'll try this next days, to put a 6 gear revoshift mechanism into à left revoshift. I do not know today how they made this.. but.. great video for everyone if someone's ready ;-) My son i 136cm and soon 8 years, but he do not has the force or hand big enough for other triggers exepted a revoshift… simple. other are Dangerous because he concentrate and put force on the triggers and can't look at the road at same time. For the rear derailleur any trigger seems possible.

    Your scenario is quite different to the OP, as your child's bike has front and rear derailleurs. Shifting the front derailleur requires more force than the rear, I can see how a child's thumbs would struggle with that and some sort of twist shift would be better. IMO The advantages of the trigger shift (for the rear derailleur) are: * Difficult to shift by accident. * Only possible to shift one great at a time (with twist it is possible to accidental change from first to sixth).

    Yes, but you need to know the rear wheel is set up for a "Freewheel" and not a "Cassette". Go to your local bike shop and tell them you want a 7 speed freewheel with the largest cog possible. You'll also have to switch out the shifter and possibly the derailleur (depending on how big the largest cog is). They should be able to walk you through it and it would be a great upgrade. - Fitzy
