In this talk, we cover *EIP-4844* (Proto-Danksharding), one of the most important Ethereum Improvement Proposals in the upcoming Ethereum upgrade. Proto-Danksharding introduces a new type of transaction to the Ethereum mainnet. This transaction type allows for efficient and cost-effective storage of data used to secure Layer 2 networks, such as Scroll, on the Ethereum network. Data storage on the Ethereum mainnet is costly and is the largest cost component of Layer 2 network transactions. This update will significantly reduce gas fees when using Layer 2 chains, with a proposed 100x improvement. Proto-Danksharding is fully forward-compatible with the remaining Ethereum scaling roadmap and serves as a stepping stone towards even cheaper Layer 2 transactions in the future.
