Just to add something i had trouble with. After installing windows, to get back to SteamOS, you need to get to bios and select bootmanager and select SteamOS. If steamOS doesnt appear in the list than, in the BIOS, select boot from file and select esp/efi/steamos/steamcl.efi. and steamOS will start. Thx for the tutorial.

If anybody has the issue of "windows could not prepare the computer to boot". When you partition the STEAM DECK SSD, make sure to make the partitioned amount NTFS otherwise it will not work. To make Bluetooth work I had to create a folder called "REALTEK" in the Program Files folder under Local Disk (C:) -> Drag the whole Bluetooth driver installer folder into desktop -> open it -> right click the installer then "Run as Administrator" (Works right after without restarting). For the Handheld Companion app get the latest version online instead of the link provided in the description. Using the old version of the app then updating manually within the app breaks the app (The app won't open after the update for some reason).

One thing to note is, if you make a MicroSD bootable in Linux, you may have trouble in Windows, where the drive may not even appear with drive letter or in partitioning tools. You can fix this by using Ext2Fsd to recognize the drive, give it a letter, and format it for Windows.

Thank you for the great video. My Steamdeck arrives tomorrow. Along with a 1TB SSD to replace the factory 64 GB. I also have the 1 TB ScanDisk extreme. Would you recommend making a bigger windows partition to install windows games on the SSD or a small partition to utilize the microSD for Windows game storage? I would image if you use the microSD for Windows games, you format (NTFS) the entire microSD?

  • @OVERKILLGAMING786

Congrats on getting the Steam Deck! As for the partition, I have tried both ways based on my gaming habits. If you play a lot of games that only run on Windows and want better performance than I would allocate more space on the SSD for Windows. If there are only a couple of games that only run on Windows and most of your library runs on SteamOS, then I would give Windows about 64GB and use the SD card to store the games. And yes, you will want to format the SD card as NTFS but I believe you can also format as BTRFS as well

trying to decide between the ally and deck. i plan on dual booting for native game pass and some games like valorant. other than the pre installed windows which is a con depending on how u see it, and the slightly better soc at the cost of battery life (docked performance is tempting but i already have a ps5 for AAAs). i feel like the steam deck is the better choice overall, thoughts? also great video! will definitely be back if and when i get the steam deck :)

So, as someone who has a Steam Deck I can say that you really can't go wrong with the Steam Deck. Of course, I have pre-ordered the ROG Ally and I am sure I will enjoy it. But much is to be learned about it. I cannot really speak on how good it will be. I do also own an Ayaneo Geek which is a Windows Handheld with a 6800U and this is very similar to what the ROG Ally will be, but the ROG Ally will have less specs than my Ayaneo (for example, my Ayaneo has a bigger battery). If you are looking for a device that excels at being a handheld, then there is nothing better than the Steam Deck. Sure, my Ayaneo mops the floor with the Steam Deck at higher TDP, which makes it great for playing docked, but if you are wanting to get more than 1.5 hours unplugged then all of that power isn't as useful as one might think. Ultimately, it will depend on how you plan to use your handheld. For me, an hour of battery life unplugged is fine because I mostly play unplugged at work. Then I come home and dock it like a console. I am also very comfortable with Windows and know how to tinker. If you are like me, then ROG Ally. If you are looking for a more powerful Switch with a great out of the box experience and very little tinkering required and longer battery life and the ability to play any with a little bit of tinkering, then go for the Steam Deck. You'll also have the better support plus a wide range of options for third party accessories such as cases, skins, replacement parts, community mods, etc.

@@OVERKILLGAMING786 thank you so much for the detailed response!! it will be my intro to pc gaming as i’ve always been on consoles and used macs for my computers. i’ve always wanted a gaming pc but the cost has kept me away. especially over the last few years (luckily things are stabilizing). i would use the handheld a lot at home, but im also planning on traveling a lot this summer so i feel the extra battery life would be very helpful on planes and transport. also i’m thinking with the money i save (~$300) i can buy games and a 1tb ssd, i only have terraria and cod bo2 on steam lol. i’m very open to tinkering with both hardware and software. the docked performance boost is enticing, but at $400 the steam deck is a bargain for a college student. also considering performance is only noticeably better docked, at $700 i might as well go all in and spend another 300 or so on a good mid range desktop that’ll perform wayy better and last longer. i think i’ve made up my mind 😅

Quick q - can you create a third partition for all os game installations which both os's can pull from? If so, how much space would I need to leave for the steam deck os partition? I wasn't planning on buying a SD card but Gamepass indies would be great to have. Great video! Will watch again when my deck arrives.

In theory, yes. This isn't something I have tried myself, but others have. You can make a third partition and format it as BTRFS. This is a file format that both Windows and Linux can read. I believe that the minimum amount of space required for SteamOS is 10GB. But I would not go less than 64 GB if it were me.

Thanks for the quick reply - I'll actually just get an SD card. They're pretty cheap and I'm not always subscribed to Gamepass, it would be silly to have SSD space taken up by games I can't access. Thanks again for your walkthrough!

Basically, you have to install Windows on the SD Card itself. Here is a video showing how I did it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gn5nsNyxYtPRqtY.htmlsi=nUsJs34fcjsLS7HS

So, as of right now Clover is only working with SteamOS which I am not sure can be installed to a laptop. But, once Clover gets tweaked and works with ChimeraOS, then you should have no problem using this on a laptop.

I use the NTFS file format. In regards to the location where Steam stores the file shaders, my assumption is that it would be in the same library folder as the actual game

Excellent video. After going through all the steps, including fixing the time. Everything worked fine. I signed into my Microsoft store and loaded my fh5. Open game and updated fh5 plus synchronized the game. Once synchronized the game will not completely open. Tried repairing and resetting Bose Microsoft store and Forza Horizon 5 to no avail. My windows 11 Pro is activated and all updated drivers installed. I reinstalled AMD graphics driver just in case that was the issue but nothing changed. I went into Forza Horizon app settings and reset the app three times to no avail. Now I'm pretty much stuck any help from the community or Overkill games would greatly be appreciated thank you.

Thanks. You should be able to do it easily in the KDE partition manager we showed at the beginning of the video. Open up the app, right click on the SteamOS and Windows partitions and choose resize/move. This will have to be done using the Steam Recovery software because you won't be able to resize the SteamOS partition within SteamOS.

You may have to do the process all over. This is why it is important to think about how much space you will want beforehand. I have been through this myself many times. I have tried 50/50, 70/30, etc. Ultimately I decided to just have 64GB for Windows and use an SD card to hold the games

BIG NOTICE AND A MISTAKE I MADE: You MUST install Windows 11 PRO not HOME otherwise, during setup, it will REQUIRE you to connect to the internet to use a microsoft account. Because we install the network drivers later on, this will show no networks found. Good video.

When it prompts you to connect to the internet, there is an option that shows in the bottom left that says "I don't have internet". Just click on that and it will skip the account setup process. I use Windows 11 Pro and this is what I do.

@@OVERKILLGAMING786correct, if you are using pro you will have the skip internet option, but if you use home edition (like I did by accident) you will not have the option to skip internet. i was just putting it out there to make sure nobody uses home by accident. Good video any way and it works on mine!
