    From Canton, OH: NICE! Suggestion--get a "PowerStation' like Jackery or ECOFLOW to run your blowers on the wood burner and the gas furnace when the grid is down. Our ECOFLOW run our furnace for 10 hours last time power went down here. You recharge these via a wall outlet when power is restored, solar panels, gas generator, or even vehicle cigarette lighter.

    Depending on how cold it is every couple of hours I would check and add wood. Yes I do feel comfortable being away. I also have put a internet camera viewing the furnace so I can check in on it while I am gone. The furnances are designed to contain the fire and the air dampeners shut down if it gets too hot.

    Looking into getting a wood furnace add on to my electric furnace. Where did you purchase yours? How much electric does the blower on the add on typically use? Is your blower controlled by thermostat in house?

    Hi, I bought mine years ago but now you can buy the US Stove version at either Tractor Supply or Rural King. Might could find it other places also depending where you are in the country. It only uses about 200-300 watts per hour so very cheap. The blower is controlled by a thermostat on the back of the stove that senses the inside air temperature used to warm your house. The fire temperature is controlled a knob on the main door which is connected to a coiled spring that opens and closes a flap depending on the inside temperature of the firebox. That knob allows you to set it to low medium and high. This opening and closing controlls the amount of air that enters the firebox which controls the amount of heat produced. It also has a dial (dampener) on the ash clean out tray door that also allows you to adjust the amount of air that is allowed to enter the firebox. you'll get the hang of it after you use it a few times..

    Thanks. That's all great information. I am located in Indiana and so far out winter has been pretty cold so far. Do you have any trouble running one of the hot air supply into the cold air return? Some say it can damage the air handler.

  • @OhioSurvivor-

    @OhioSurvivor-

    6 жыл бұрын

    I actually consulted my HVAC installer about adding the heat sensor and they came out and help me to get it wired to work as I requested. They said it was a great idea and would not have any affect on the air handler. What I did not mention is that once heat is sensed in the pipe, it cycles up my fan to high on the furnace AND turns off my outside heat pump. They did say that turning off the outside heat pump was important to keep the system healthy.

    Thanks for the comment. Normally during the day its easier to add wood as need to control the heat. At night you can load it up and reduce air flow and it will go as long as 5-6 hours and still has enough hot coals to keep the fire going in the morning. Burning coal would give the ability for longer burn times for sure but the type of wood also plays a big part on burn times.

    The sensor I have in the 8" duct is what is known as a "close on rise" meaning when heat is sensed it closes the circuit which activates the main blower on my central furnace. The sensor is set at 90 degrees but by the time the air is circulated it cools down quite a bit. The heat temperature is controlled by the air dampers on the wood burner at that point. Hope this helps.

    @@OhioSurvivor- I have a model 1557m , looks to be the same stove you have , but green powder coat. I have burned coal in it a few times over the dozen years or so I've had it. But not a regular thing for me. I just replaced the grates and frames the baffles and the rear liner as well as new fire bricks. I've been very satisfied with this stove. I just replaced my heating/cooling system last spring and did not tie the wood stove into this new system yet. This stove will heat our house more than sufficient. Our house is a bit over 3400 square feet and it's plenty warm if you don't keep the stove choked down . I appreciate your video and taking the time to reply . I'm in eastern Ohio. The recent weather here has been just cold enough to burn the stove but I've been keeping smaller fires.

    You just run the blow motor(fan) not the heat which is being produced by the wood burner? Would you run the duck work before the filter or after the filter? I’ve seen them where they are installed after the blower motor, evaporator coil and heat element. So I was just curious which would be the best.

  • @OhioSurvivor-

    @OhioSurvivor-

    Yes but only the blower motor runs to move the air. The central furnace does not produce any heat unless the temperature in the house gets too cold. That only happens when wood needs to be added to the wood burner.
