Update on the Hybrid Bluegills

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We decided to go try and catch some of the hybrid bluegills that we stocked in our smallest pond. The weeds are very thick on this pond right now so unfortunately we weren't able to catch any but we did then move to the bigger pond and catch some fish with the net.

That lemna minor, duckweed covering all the pond, is both more good than bad at the same time, good, because of fishing birds and to filter the water, because it process nutrients like nitrites, phosphates, ammonia and excess nitrates, it also add O2 to the water and bad because you don't see what is inside the pond.

Duckweed is edible IF you boil it for a long time, but you can feed it to your chickens and ducks directly. You might have a very nice little duckweed farm there. Could be very lucrative if you know of people in your area who have poultry. Especially because it is far better for them than chicken feed peeps usually buy from the feed store. BTW, to clear a large portion of the smaller pond of the duck weed without harming any fry that may be living in it, get about 20' of kid pool floaties and string a rope through them. Then knot both ends of this train of floaties so they can't separate. Have the length of rope be longer than the diameter of your pond and drop the string of floaties in one corner and have your kids hold one end of the rope and walk around one side of the pond while you walk around to the other side. Once you all get back together on the other end of the pond, you'll see that you've entrapped most of the duck weed into a circular area. Tie both ends together and anchor to the shore and you now have a little floating duckweed garden and have also cleared most of the pond of surface debris so the fishies can get proper oxygen and lighting.

I work in aquatics. The carp are not meant to eat the aquatic vegetation you have there as it is large duckweed. Carp are meant to eat ground based pond weeds. There are multiple herbicides we sell that will kill duckweed as it is an extremely invasive plant. Reply if you want more info.

I have a 16'dia swimming pool with blue gill in it started with 100 of them. I now have my first batch of new blue gill fry about 30 of them. I would think birds would be eating your blue gill a blue heering would take a lot of blue from your set up. I lost quite a few large gold fish from a tank to them. The visability in my pool is good , I can see 50% of the fish at any one giving time. With the bass , are any blue gill going to be left.

ok, no hate from me, i grow fish commercially for 10+years, there are few things that you should keep in mind. No.1-feed fish in the same places so they get used to beeing fed there(you can catch them easier to get updates on avarage weight and sickness if present) No.2-the catfish food pellets are too big for small fish(i assume the grass carp are around 200-500gr depending on feed) No.3-grasscarp(Ctenopharyngodon idella) do not feed on duckweed, but regular carp(Cyprinus carpio) does feed on duckweed no.4-all disturbance on the surface will scare the fish into deep water wary fast no.5-the duckweed in your smaller pond is good animalfeed or plantfeed(source of N in compost or direct feed on around plant roots) but its bad for water quality and should be taken out no.6-the kids are adorable but the noise is scaring the fish easily

The smaller fish are not going to be out in the middle of the pond they are going to be very close to the bank and as much cover as the pond affords. You find them close to weeds dock trees anything they can hide in or around you'll never find them more then a few feet off the bank

I harvest it off the top of the water and then freeze it in blocks so I can feed it to my Tilipia through out winter in my indoors aquaponics. What nice about duckweed it will repopulate very quickly

You need to clear the algae. Use and heavy rake head for leaves without the handle tie it to a rope and pull it out of your pond then put algae carp in. The fish cant even get to the food when its that thick.

Is that excessive algae a result of phosphate or nitrate fertilizers getting into the pond water?

You might need to put more then a few carp in there because that is alot. and some catfish. that might help more.
