Update on the Hybrid Bluegills
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
We decided to go try and catch some of the hybrid bluegills that we stocked in our smallest pond. The weeds are very thick on this pond right now so unfortunately we weren't able to catch any but we did then move to the bigger pond and catch some fish with the net.

"we are going to throw it randomly in the pond" *proceeds to throw it in the same spot every time.

Not everyone is an expert on what they are making videos on. Some people are showing you the process. I really like your private ponds!
It's amazing how you randomly threw into the same spot.... and even more amazing was suprised you didnt catch any.... when you throw to a spot they move from that spot....
Polywog come to my hands! Hahaha your son is hilarious 😂
If I were a sunfish I would definitely swim up to the spot where a giant cast net just crashed into the water moments earlier...
Yea, throwing the net over & over in the same place is a terrible strategy for catching fish. Think about it.

nice try I will be looking out for the next one Thanks
Take the duckweed off the top of that pond. Use what you can and till the rest into fertilizer. Or add 3 or 4 hundred tilapia to that pond to fill the duckweed over production.
Fun with the fam, nice.
That lemna minor, duckweed covering all the pond, is both more good than bad at the same time, good, because of fishing birds and to filter the water, because it process nutrients like nitrites, phosphates, ammonia and excess nitrates, it also add O2 to the water and bad because you don't see what is inside the pond.

I agree. Just a guy and his family sharing things with the very heartless public. I like to watch things like this.
Look like crain, sanping turtale,or a two legged problem. We did untell we gather up some used xmas tree's,or evergreens put in poud, spaced for cover(fish can hide in). A must, post,no tresspassing sign's,and don't tell no one you stocked. If you told, tell everyone you had the water tested and it's poisonest. This worked for me.Oh get a couple of ducks for the green duckweed.
Determination congrats
Stock some Tilapia in there in Spring...they die off the first hard cold front so catch them out n eat them before then. We did it with our pond when we bought the place and they leaned it right up in one season.
Duckweed is edible IF you boil it for a long time, but you can feed it to your chickens and ducks directly. You might have a very nice little duckweed farm there. Could be very lucrative if you know of people in your area who have poultry. Especially because it is far better for them than chicken feed peeps usually buy from the feed store. BTW, to clear a large portion of the smaller pond of the duck weed without harming any fry that may be living in it, get about 20' of kid pool floaties and string a rope through them. Then knot both ends of this train of floaties so they can't separate. Have the length of rope be longer than the diameter of your pond and drop the string of floaties in one corner and have your kids hold one end of the rope and walk around one side of the pond while you walk around to the other side. Once you all get back together on the other end of the pond, you'll see that you've entrapped most of the duck weed into a circular area. Tie both ends together and anchor to the shore and you now have a little floating duckweed garden and have also cleared most of the pond of surface debris so the fishies can get proper oxygen and lighting.

Awesome experience for your kids to grow up with a pond and lake. Super cool! BTW: what kind of dog is the white one? My kids fell in love with it when I showed them your video of buying the hybrids and stocking your pond...
I feel like you could get a pool scooping net, and spend one day focusing on cleaning that pond and you could clear it almost completely. But I know that’s easier said than done. But it would be worth a shot
If you throw that net all around the pond you wont need any grass carp anymore. You d remove all the grass. 😁
I work in aquatics. The carp are not meant to eat the aquatic vegetation you have there as it is large duckweed. Carp are meant to eat ground based pond weeds. There are multiple herbicides we sell that will kill duckweed as it is an extremely invasive plant. Reply if you want more info.

The Neals' Homestead I wouldn't use a herbicide if you plan on eating the fish or swimming in the water! There are serious health implications that comes with the use of herbicides. PLEASE do you due diligence in researching this topic. www.ewg.org/research/weed-killers-glass/chapter-1-health-effects-herbicides#.WbU2oKllBnE

Good quality video.
I have a 16'dia swimming pool with blue gill in it started with 100 of them. I now have my first batch of new blue gill fry about 30 of them. I would think birds would be eating your blue gill a blue heering would take a lot of blue from your set up. I lost quite a few large gold fish from a tank to them. The visability in my pool is good , I can see 50% of the fish at any one giving time. With the bass , are any blue gill going to be left.
Chucking the kid in to the water made it worthwhile. :-)
2 things... #1 - a pond full of pollywags has no preditors in it. #2 - 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water.

That bass is the one eating the bluegills.

Good job man
I tried using a cast net like that to catch bait fish in Fl Keys and it's harder than it looks. After much instruction I still couldn't throw it right. Our guide was a master at it though and netting plenty of bait. I think you did an admirable job-it ain't easy.

I'm thinking a trolling net would be useful.
Get a bail or two of Barley Straw and throw it in your pond. It will slightly change the water PH and that unwanted green stuff will begin to disappear...

Had the same problem with my pond, the vegetation took all the oxygen from the pond and my fish all died so that way you can't catch them with the net... also throw the net in different areas and not the same area 10 times!
That smaller pond really could use some aeration.

At 8:13 who say that giant tangle in his net
You need a bigger cast net, by the time they hear or feel the weights hit the water, they swim out of its range with a single flick of its tail
When we clean our pond out it stay gone all winter as well then it came back in the spring we was told drain the pond and start over

I just ordered some herbicide that is supposed to take care of the duckweed. Hopefully it will work.
Might wanna check overgrowth it might be sucking up all the 02 plus water looks like it has HUGE amounts of algae cutting 02 also pond is very stagnet get the water moving oxegenating your water
You can get rid of the duck weed in all your lakes completely without harming any fish but if you have it in 1 lake it will be in all.
Throw the same place consecutively you will catch lots of them. Haha
ok, no hate from me, i grow fish commercially for 10+years, there are few things that you should keep in mind. No.1-feed fish in the same places so they get used to beeing fed there(you can catch them easier to get updates on avarage weight and sickness if present) No.2-the catfish food pellets are too big for small fish(i assume the grass carp are around 200-500gr depending on feed) No.3-grasscarp(Ctenopharyngodon idella) do not feed on duckweed, but regular carp(Cyprinus carpio) does feed on duckweed no.4-all disturbance on the surface will scare the fish into deep water wary fast no.5-the duckweed in your smaller pond is good animalfeed or plantfeed(source of N in compost or direct feed on around plant roots) but its bad for water quality and should be taken out no.6-the kids are adorable but the noise is scaring the fish easily
The smaller fish are not going to be out in the middle of the pond they are going to be very close to the bank and as much cover as the pond affords. You find them close to weeds dock trees anything they can hide in or around you'll never find them more then a few feet off the bank
What kind of ?
quite a algae bloom you got going. They're in there! They are under all the water sprite. The frogs are a sign of healthy ecosystem. Give it time. The plants are in the way of your net. Practice tossing that net...correctly. Why not connect both ponds since the other is so small?
if you are looking for grass/weed control research using a submerged bale of alfalfa...or somthing like that...i cant remember exactly, ( dont know if this has been suggested yet, i had no time to research the comments ) a neighbor used somthing like this in his swim pond and really worked well...

interesting. Thanks!
Cast netting in the same spot results in spooked fish. Plus out an algae barrier to kill off the algae. It's safe non toxic.
Hey you threw it in the same place like 7 times smart one
The pond is too shallow in the first place and then you have all the algae which uses all the oxygen in the water. You should've just stocked it with regular Bluegill then moved them when they got bigger to the large pond so they had a chance to reproduce.
i was waiting for the moment the water would go into the boat when he stood
U spooked up all the fish because u casted in the same spot 100 times

You need to clear the algae. Use and heavy rake head for leaves without the handle tie it to a rope and pull it out of your pond then put algae carp in. The fish cant even get to the food when its that thick.
Is that excessive algae a result of phosphate or nitrate fertilizers getting into the pond water?
put mesh on the dam between the pond and then use a shovel and a bunch more grass carp to clear the pond
You might need to put more then a few carp in there because that is alot. and some catfish. that might help more.
Who was here before three mil
lol, geez did you try worms? and your skill at throwing a baby cast net is outstanding
That's is exactly what's happening it's slowing u down and just a quick tip get out there with a lil boat or even a tube and stir it up that shit will sink to the bottom

Some advice for you grass carp are actually bad for you bluegill they destroy their nest try adding aqua shade to your pond to starve the vegetation down
Rod and reel with a cricket or meal worm?

So where was the update?
grass carp will not eat algae unless it stuck to a plant they are eating.
