I’m praying for Odin. He might have been better as a one dog family. I praise his owner for trying and loving dogs so much, and I hope she’s successful for Odin’s sake! It brakes my heart.

Agree and if not, someone should adopt him. My late dog was very dominant and confident a so called "powerbreed" not neutred. I adopted him from a woman who could not handle him because he was to dominant. I had him for 7 years, the best dog in the world, but I had always to be firm and clear in communication with him. He was the sweetest and had no "idea" about how his dominance impacted how he was perceived. He had not an aggressive cell in his body, but many would think he was dangerous. I hope if the female owner of Odin end up not being able to handle him somebody else does.

Crazy thing is everything you’re describing is straight out of the handbook of dominant dogs, first page. Has she considered the possibility of searching for candidates to rehome him with. It would obviously take time because that person would need to fit a specific profile in life style, behavior, experience with dominant dogs etc., but it’s definitely possible. I’m often frustrated but I also understand why people are fascinated with dominant dogs. But they are not for everyone and don’t fit neatly into every life style. My hope is that candidates emerge. In a perfect scenario that person could work with you and Odin’s mom. I really hope to create a universal registry of qualified people for certain breeds of dogs. It gives them a higher probability of success. You guys are doing amazing work.

The problem with rehoming him is that he has a bite history, therefore he is a liability even when taken out of CA (homeowners insurance). Uncertain how the 3 strike rule in CA exactly works, as I am on the east coast, and if its throughout entire CA or just certain counties. If she feels mentally ok with keeping him, the rehoming the other dogs starting with the puppy would be better options. JMO

Thanks for sharing and the update. Obvious everything possible is being done. Safeguarding all situations and being consistent. Owner is in a tough situation and doing her very best. Thats clear. Sometimes it's just bad timing and wrong dynamics which nobody can see until they grow together. Been in similar but had the option to rehome safely so this must be unbearable and we all feel for her and everyone involved. As a multi dog house it's all about safeguarding and dynamics. He's at a difficult age for being a twerp thug but who knows if that mellows or remains untrustworthy in situations. Especially if he thinks he's amazing. That confidence in a punk pup is a liability we all know well. Sometimes its even cute, but not fully challenging the owner more than once. Maybe it is her hormones he's reacting to? That's nobodys fault. Sending best wishes from the UK. Xx

He might get a sense of power from playing Mr. Tough Guy with the other dogs. Keep up the great work. I hope and pray that he will be able to go home with his momma and to live a long & happy life. What a beautiful beast he is.

You are working so hard to help Odin understand unacceptable behavior. I’m not judging, but while his owner loves him, she IS working outside of the home and has 4 extremely powerful male Boerboels, a bird, and possibly some other pets. I had two female Great Danes, that after living together for several years, viciously attacked each other outside. Because I adored them, never wanted to repeat this traumatic experience, and had two young children, we gave one to a family with children that had recently lost their Dane. It was heartbreaking for us but a perfect solution. The result was heartwarming. Both dogs lived happily until the end of their lives. Maybe the owner could unselfishly give Odin to someone who knows the breed and doesn’t have children or other pets to see if it works. Please don’t put Odin down!

Odin was bred to think independently, not his mistake,it is just the way it is. He is unlike any other power breed out there. If he claimed you, you belong to him and he will protect you to the bitter end as they are protectors. At times they do not play well with other dog breeds. I love the breed with all my hart, but they are not for everyone and you have to be at the top of your game mentally to own one. Odin has a bit to much "Boerboel" in him, he will do great on a farm protecting his family. I wish you the best of luck and believe you will succeed in your training. Just a tip, the South African Defence Force treid to train them back in the day,but found they were to temprimental and independant thinkers so chose not to use them.

Exactly! Odin is doing what boerbels were bred to do. They were bred to be homestead protectors in South Africa. They had be independent as they are tasked with protecting and neutralizing any threats on big farms without human direction. Boerbels are fantastic dogs in the right situations. However, they periodically test your boundaries much more than other mastiff breeds. Still say trainer should keep Odin.

I believe about 7 weeks ago now that I made a comment that I see a very confident dog with a dominant streak. You were sitting in his kennel and I felt he was trying to push himself onto you. Beginning stages. As you said in this video, it is extremely difficult to have a pack of 4 powerful dogs, and all males in that. It would be interesting the hear evaluations of her other dogs. I myself currently am rehabilitating and working a very dominant GSD that came to me after his owner suddenly passed with a lot of issues. It took an entire week before he trusted me enough to touch him, till then he just wanted to eat me or destroy anything in a form of rage. New set of rules, structure, consistency, trust... I am not a dog trainer by trade. Leaving work at work, often I sit for a while in the car to decompress before I go to the kennel for morning duties. I got 6 high drive GSD altogether, its a lot of energy that needs to be managed accordingly. True dominant dogs are fairly rare, most just act like they are the dominant dog...a bluff so to say. I can say I have had the pleasure of of being now with my second one, the rehab case. Lots of bad training that behavior wise loaded him. Like a badly maintained gun, you shoot the first 3 rounds just fine, and onthe 4th it will explode for seemingly no reason, but there always is. We are bonded now, and those bonds are on a whole other level. I feel it might be difficult for Odins owner to establish the trust and structure such dominant dog needs, and I would not be able to blame her. The attack was a major break of trust in their relationship, and it probably always will be on her mind. A wise man told me once, if you have a dominant dog, you have to support their dominance within the pack, or the dominant dog will always feel the need to establish its nature to rule. You can never see yourself as a member of the pack, you are the owner, and you decide anything and everything for them. I hope Odins owner figures out what will be best and safest for her to have a peaceful and manageable living arrangement.

I really do think she needs to find another home for this dog. I hope she is proud of herself for working very hard but I also hope she is intuitive enough to realize he deserves, more than likely to be an only dog with someone who is very strong psychologically and mentally, a confident and Physically Active individual. #teamodin

I have no doubt that your calm and honest assessment is helpful for the dog’s owner. It must be very difficult for her to be facing the reality of her situation. At the end of the day, I am hoping that she puts the dog’s best interests above her own. It sounds like her life right now doesn’t really allow for keeping him.

couldn't agree more. And you're right, it's difficult to find good trainers. I have a pitbull rescue and am encountering some issues which I'm trying to work through. It is so disheartening when I'm advised to put him down ( because of the breed) or that it's neurological and I should pay for expensive meds (which actually didn't really help). I wish I wasn't in South Africa and could take my dog to your institution for sound, no BS advice! Thank you for the videos. They are insightful and helpful!

At what point does the dog decomprnsate after being in a facility long term, despite getting training? It’s not his home. How does training transfer? I spend time with a GSD at a boarding facility who has been there for 9 months. She finally has a staff member take her on outings and has had offers of adoption but owners won’t allow it. They are usually out of the country. I’ve watched that dog unravel and it breaks everyone’s heart. She gets more attention than any other dog but still it’s not a home. Ethically she should be rehomed.

I noticed that he tends to harass because I know this very well from my dog. I am a woman who weighs 60 kg and my dog weighs 45 kg and is a livestock guard mix. That means I had to learn and learn and learn because this dog tests my limits and tests me more than any of my previous dogs. I know that everything is being watched and checked by him and I cannot pretend. he sees through me. I would like to tell the owner of my learning with him something that could help her: If you don't feel good, whether physically or mentally, don't try to hide anything from yourself. It doesn't work for your dog. Act accordingly! If you are tired or inattentive, then don't make any effort and still pack your dog in the car for a trip, it doesn't pay off. Only do it when you feel strong and courageous. Every day when I tie my shoes to go for a walk with my dog, I ask myself how well I feel and adjust my routine accordingly. This has become a habit for me. My dog only ever gives me trouble when I'm really weak and it gets worse when I hide it too. it does not work like that. In everything you do and think about, your priority must be: I will do it the way I feel most comfortable with it. I'll do it immediately. I do this consistently. I'm doing it so that we all feel better! Take off your role like an old dress and do things the way they work best, not the way people expect you to. Your dog observes this when you always withdraw. Make a plan for it, you already have help at your side, plan in detail so that you feel good and safe, but leave room for changes at the moment when you have to react flexibly to what works and what doesn't work.

If he was my dog, for sure I would do anything/everything to help him and keep him. His owner seems like a strong person, I sincerely hope that she can grow beyond this experience. In the comments below, someone said that the Corso would always see him as a tiger & not trust him in the pack. What do you think? Also, he looks like a young dog. This may be a dumb question, but might his age now, in the future, play a role possible changes in their relationship?

This is what happens when ignorant, uneducated, unprepared people run out and buy the dog of their dreams without having a first clue how are they going to raise that dog? More work needs to be done by breeders and vetting these would be owners to make sure they equipped with what they need to raise that animal and if not, don’t sell the puppy to them. Too often, these dogs, beautiful, smart, loyal dogs turn out to be too much for inexperienced handlers and where do they go to the shelter? The likelihood of them coming out of that shelter and living a happy life are slim to none, especially when you’ve got a dog like Odin. I really hope this woman reconsiders her lifestyle and either find a new owner more capable for Odin or rehomes her other three dogs. This sounds to me like the only way forward. I wish them the best and I wish people would learn from this story. Don’t buy a puppy if you’re not prepared to raise him properly.

Definitely needs to split up that pack, for her safety. Despite us thinking dogs need us exclusively, in fact they will very quickly fit in with another owner, and usually another pack too. That being said I'm pressing on with a very reactive stray gypsy lurcher who, suddenly after being here for four months, turned on our other dog several times over a mad 10 days when jointly sniffing grass. I don't let that happen now, but still haven't really gotten to the bottom of why. Was told by behaviourist, and pretty much the vet, to consider putting her to sleep. The vet has seen her at her worse when needing an injection for spaying and ear infection when she arrived. Was close but couldn't. It's hard but just remember the dog will quickly adapt in another home, as shown whilst he is with you.

A dog, who is not sick or abused, to turn on his owner without cause - I can't see how you come back from that. If a human partner attacked her, beat her or worse would she send them for counselling and then take them back? Everyone would be saying throw them out!!

So because you blocked my ability to even have a conversation with you after I asked you specifically why you felt I was being naive. I will just reach out here because I was truly interested in your opinion as to where I was off base. You had liked my comments that I had made in the past referencing my frame of thought, but then rather than just have a back and forth with me even privately you berated me and then blocked me. I have been nothing but in your corner as well as odin's, and I can't learn from my mistakes in my thought processes unless or until when I asked you specifically to help me with that, you instead bitch me out and block me. I did truly want to hear from you, in a way that I could possibly learn something, or possibly understand where I had misinterpreted your comments with regards to this dog. I wasn't ...am not some troll. I was a true supporter, and would still like to be. I can't if I don't understand where I'm not understanding. I'm really not interested in you berating me again so if you can't find a way to have a real back and forth with me then just don't bother answering and I will go about my business. I honestly thought I had your back as well as Odin's, again based upon some of the comments that I had read from you yourself with regards to him, that you actually agreed with or so I thought. I believe with all of my heart this is a misunderstanding but hey I've been wrong before apparently. I'm still team Odin and I still respect what you do and that is precisely why I asked you personally to give me feedback, not bitch me out and block me .
