Well if Garmin only moved to pay because they got some bad press from your channel, it concerns me that a hiker without a YT channel or public forum might not have the results you had. Garmin needs to pay attention when there is a claim and get it paid timely. I surely will use caution in the future to review their customer review and survey before I use them or suggest their services to anyone else. Thank you Dixie and glad your community backed you up and got the claim paid.

Sounds like a familiar story. I was backpacking alone last July when I sensed something was up with me healthwise. I was referred to a cardiologist who scheduled me for a stress test. When I showed up for it, I was told there was a mistake and the equipment used for it was already in use and I would have to reschedule. This was after burning a vacation day from work for this test. That was September 16. Long story short, on Sunday night, September 24, 2023, I had a heart attack. Within 24 hours I had a stent to open a 99% blocked artery. I tried to address the issue and do preventative maintenance the right way but our local health care system is so incompetent that it took a near death experience to get the problem fixed. This nation’s health care system is in a pitiful state. No one wants to be accountable for a diagnosis.

The equipment seems to be a chronic problem, or maybe excuse. I too was scheduled for a stress test and then they called the day before my appointment with "Our treadmill just broke down, we don't know when it will be fixed, we have to reschedule and we'll call to let you know". Naturally, weeks go by, no call. I had to call them to get it done ( and then it was "Oh we were just about to call you" ). THEN they wanted me to have a CT scan. Same deal, appointment scheduled and the day before they call to say "We don't do that test at this location, we have to reschedule you for next week at another office" halfway across the city. Apparently for 3 weeks they didn't know that they didn't do this test at this location and only twigged to it the day before. Had the test and haven't heard a word from the cardiologist since...and every time I call his office it's "Our computer system is down we can't do anything we'll call you tomorrow". Which, of course, they don't, ever.

As someone who works in the medical field I was crawling out of my skin watching this video. You should absolutely have been put on a Holter monitor. Especially if you still feel the flutter and the Apple Watch is still picking them up. They would easily capture the arrhythmia and then could go from there. I don’t understand how they can dismiss it without knowing what it is. Best of luck to you! I hope you can find a cardiologist that is willing to get to the bottom of it. Long story but the short of it is I had a stroke at 27 with no prior knowledge of any cardiac problem. It was found during the work up that I had a PFO (hole in my heart) that was only open when I would bear down. It’s since been closed, I have no restrictions, and am now almost 42. It’s probably fine isn’t a good enough answer.

Glad to see you're getting up and about again! ER doc here, unfortunately most Apple/Garmin watch/Kardia Mobile tracings are very prone to movement artifact and not of the quality needed to confidently diagnose specific arrhythmias, you really need a proper ambulatory cardiac monitor. In the old days, this was a Holter monitor which is rather unwieldy, but my facility uses a much smaller one called the Zio XT. This is a small device that you stick to your chest and wear 24/7, typically for about 2 weeks or so, then mail in for download and interpretation. It has a button that you can push if you are experiencing your symptoms, it then marks it on the recording. This is especially useful if you have an activity routine that will reliably provoke the sensation, but is not easy to perform while in the office. You might talk your primary care doc and see if they can order one for you, we put them on the in ER fairly frequently for outpatient arrhythmia workups. Hope this helps!

Echocardiograms are just one tool in the chest (pun intended). Some arrhythmias can be caused by abnormal heart anatomy or valvular disease that can be detected by imaging. So it’s good to do stress echos. But a clear stress echo obviously doesn’t mean there is no problem. There are many types of arrhythmias and heart disease that can’t be seen with ultrasound.

Low and behold a year later, it started showing in her tests, and fortunately, she found a Dr who understood symptoms showed up before it was of a level to be detected in her tests. $60k for a helicopter rescue, wow! Me and my brother used our Garmins on Mt Whitney last year to have someone flown out, a hiker that needed rescue. In California, at least for r CA residents, charges are not usually forwarded to the person rescued unless negligence was involved. I guess there are other caveats as well. This is only what I've read though, I'm no expert. i don't know if the person we rescued was charged. Good thing you had the insurance and glad you are getting back on the trail! I tried to get a colonoscopy last year and was treated like crap by the office staff at two different doctors. Needless to say, I still haven't had one. The last one was 7 years ago. The complete medical system seems to have given up on customer service, thanks to insurance companies and big box store thinking and of the big hospital consolidation companies. I'm glad you got the Garmin issue resolved, and you are feeling better even after going through all the doctor issues. Look forward to your new videos.

I hopr you get your issues straightened out and get to have your colonostomy soon. /I'm having the same type of issue with gastroenterologists, only in my case it's a lesion, or cyst, on my liver that has been growing for years with no diagnosis. A highly rated doctor literally told me he'd be right back in the middle of our appointment and then never came back, just sent his nurse in. I couldn't believe it. The differential diagnosis on my MRI and CT included possible metastatic cancer, and this guy never even told me anything or let me ask questions OR schedule me for a liver biopsy. Told me to get another MRI even though I told him I have crippling panic disorder that makes MRI impossible without medicine. I cancelled the colonoscopy he had recommended and couldn't get through the MRI. I've been trying to get a referral to go through to another liver specialist for over a year because they won't see me without the jerk doctor's records, and they weren't responding to record requests. It is absolutely ridiculous the hoops that must be jumped through when every day can make a difference. I'm naturally untrusting towards doctors now, though. In my early 20s I was dismissed as a drug seeker when I was having awful sciatic pain until the night I had to be transferred from one ER to another larger local hospital for an emergency spinal fusion surgery to avoid paralysis within hours. Crazy.

As someone that has a congenial heart detect (and other issues including arrhythmia), a few things. Making a chekc-up cardiologist appointment, much less any testing, has gotten so tough. My doctor has a check-up appointment backlog of over a year, meaning for my annual check-up, I go every 18 months. I don't know why there is such demand on cardiologists these days, when I was younger it was easy to get an appointment or reschedual if something came up. Saying all of that, your cardiologist should have put one of those mobile units on you and track your heart rate/etc over the course of a week so they can pick up any arryhtmias. I've done a few of the single or two day tests where I wear a unit and send it back with notes. That is what you needed. Also, you are doing terrific. I love hiking and the outdoors, I am a biologist, but climbing elevation is one of the few things that I am handicaped on doing. Hiking uphill and with higher elevations, really slows me down and drains my energy.

As another said, the likelihood of someone with a similar claim, but without Dixie's audience, having their accident paid would drop tremendously. I do not have this coverage from Garmin (and I'm not sure I ever will), but others who do have it claim that the policy is only for accidents, like an animal attack, tripping and breaking your leg, a lightning strike, a tree falling on you ... but not due to illnesses. If that is true, and I see no reason to doubt these claims, then you can bet six figures that the size of Dixie's channel, and the people emailing Garmin about whether it would be paid, was a huge factor in their decision to pay. None of that should be taken as ill will towards her -- I'm happy at the result and I hope others with similar claims will also get the coverage. What's more likely unfortunately, is that Garmin will either raise rates in anticipation of more claims like this being paid, and/or their policy will be *extremely revised* to specifically prevent cases like this from being paid again.

I feel your pain, literally. I had my heart attack a year and a half ago. I couldn’t get answers from my doctors either. With all the advances in heart related medicine there is still a lot they don’t know.

Hi Dixie, a relative of mine had suffered similar things with the doctors and it almost killed him. I don't give advice to anyone, but in this case I have to make an exception that you get on a train and look for a cardiologist who takes your problems seriously. I know it takes a lot of money and time, but it will be worth it later. The doctor should put you on a spinning bike and then see what the heart does at maximum body load. I wish you every success. Greetings from the other side of the Atlantic.
