This is an excellent video to see the tail-hair Bai Toey had one year ago. It says they posted this video to their Facebook page July 2, 2022, yet now, her tail is almost denuded of hair. Knowing that the traditional mahout practice is to pull the tail-hair to sell, what else could one possibly think? One doesn't like to make assumptions, but that is what mahouts do, and tail-hair doesn't just fall out.

It is good to see that Baitoey and Meeboon have become friends. It is so fascinating and heart warming the way that elephants can become friends and help one another.

That elephant had a big smile on her face as she was eating. Phants CAN actually physically smile, I've seen it numerous times. It's not just the shape of their mouths that just make it look like they are smiling like with cats, phants really smile. Eating is a joyful time to phants because they LOVE to eat, they are just like pigs in that way

Bai Toey is beautiful! She's relaxed and happy, contented, at ease, "at home." She has settled in with Meeboon so well, they are at peace, as their lives should be. I am so grateful for their happy condition, and I appreciate this video. Like others here, I think of her often, and will continue to pray for her future. Sending heartfelt love to her. (Kham La's mother is another "Bai Toey.")

There has been much discussion about Bai Toey's age, said to be 7, also 11, as many elephant owners haven't kept records. If she is 11, she is small for her age, which could be. She is registered as a 7 year old, but even on official databases, elephant ages/birth dates and birth locations are often not known since previous owners didn't keep records on them. In either case, she is a youngster that has known a very hard life, and has suffered much. These past 4 months, receiving ENP's peace and care and Nanny Meeboon's loving attention has done her a great deal of good, saving her life. As a result, she began to eat. Though medical exams found no cause for her not eating, it could very well have involved adrenal exhaustation due to all she has suffered. Sometimes Vets forget to check the adrenals to see how they are functioning. Chronic abuse, stress and brutality wears out the adrenal glands very badly, and if they stop functioning, if the adrenals stop secreting, dire conditions can result, even death. Addison's disease patients can lose their appetite, have muscle weakness and spasms, lethargy/progressive fatigue, increased thirst, increased urination, diarrhea, vomiting, and intermittent shaking episodes. When there is adrenal insufficiency, the inability to increase cortisol production with stress can lead to crisis which is life-threatening, resulting in low blood pressure and other blood issues. After she arrived, they had noted shaking as something they had observed, and a number of the symptoms line up. Considering all the brutality young elephants are made to suffer, it puts their adrenals through hell, so this is a real danger. It's been said that she was taken from her mother at only 10 months of age, and was sickly for a long time/years. That she has even survived is astounding. Sri Nuan's babe was taken from her at 8 months old and died a short time later. To be taken from their mothers so young is devastating and absolutely traumatizing, stressing the adrenals to the max. Chronic stress, as Bai Toey has suffered, is enough to do the adrenals in. Her time under ENP's care and receiving care and love from Meeboon has given her a respite and a peace she hasn't known, doubtless, in all her years of life since she last saw her mother. In observing her, many viewers have written over recent months, that she must *not be returned to her former life being abused, that she wouldn't survive it. If they knew the truth of the condition of adrenals that have suffered so badly, they would know how insightful their words were. Adrenals cannot continue under chronic and severe abuse. Addison's disease/adrenal insufficiency, and adrenal exhaustion, are very serious, yet can be overlooked in testing. She's only been at ENP for 4 months. Some here might want to read about her and her arrival at ENP's website, it's informative.

So sweet to see the water buffalo sharing her bananas very relaxedly. I didn't know that was part of their diet. These two are perhaps realising they are on to a good thing with regular supplies of food. Is Wan Mai still keeping up her buffalo friendships ? Good luck with monsoon tonight ! Much love to you all, and a special thought for the caretakers who do such a great work.

Is Baitoey. Leks to keep for life or does Baitoey still belong to the person who let her come to nature park? I sure hope she will be able to stay forever with all of you. I was not sure if any updates have come up for her. Thank you for all you do and the elephants love you, they see you and come over to you. If you don't have yummies they leave, that is so funny. Have a great day

From the ENP website it says that Bai Toey is only here for care. There are several elephants there only for medical care and are not owned by ENP thus may have to be returned to their owner eventually. I believe Chana and her half-sister Sai Thong are two other temporary residents. I'm sure ENP does try to negotiate the sale of the elephants but many owners won't sell if the elephants can still make money for them after they've recovered, especially the younger ones and now that tourism has opened up.

@@ccs4957 Chana came as a foster, but is a permanent resident of ENP now, as that change was worked through a few years back. As far as I know on the subject of fosters, there are the 3 in the same mini-herd whose most recent video we saw yesterday (that live and roam the other side of the river), Suphap, Dok Mai and HongFah, and there is Sai Thong and Bai Toey. If there are more, I don't know. There have been others that came as fosters that are now permanent, like Maliwan and Mae Koy. For every one that becomes permanent, like Chana, we are so thankful!

Praying that Baitoey's permanent future is at ENP!!! 🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞❤❤❤🐘 I understand that elephants are part of the way of life in Thailand (as despicable as it is) but are there educational programs being dispensed to elephant "owners" & the wider Thai population to discourage the use & "ownership" of elephants? Has there been any success where some elephant "owners" have changed their mindset & chosen to no longer have elephants based on a new-found empathy for them?

2023, July 21 1:15 Bai Toey *_DID_* have *_a lot_* of hair on her tail, as seen in this video, but a year later, her tail is almost denuded of hair. *_What happened to it?!_* This is yet another ethical concern, as a common mahout practice in the Asian elephant industry has been to pull out the tail hairs to sell to vendors in town that make bracelets of it for tourists. *_Why does Bai Toey have almost no hair left on her tail??!!_* I emailed Ryan, Lek's SEF director, with concern about the great recent loss of hair from Bai Toey's tail, and Ryan's reply was that Wan Mai had bitten Bai Toey's tail, implying that she was the cause of the loss of Bai Toey's tail-hair, *_but elephants don't even have front teeth!_*

@@cacatr4495 Ugh, I wouldn’t doubt it. Since the mahouts aren’t Thai, don’t speak Thai (I’d long wondered why there was never any interaction), one has to think it’s a matter of pay and, frankly, how much oversight could there possibly be when they can’t even communicate.

@@gabe-po9yi Exactly: exceptionally low pay for the Burmese-Karen tribe mahouts (which equate to illegal immigrants there); they have their traditions, viewing elephants as commodities; as you say, they can't communicate with anyone, and no one is in a position to take note of such details except us, so the mahout, I'm sure, thinks no one would ever know *if they even thought it was an issue, which is questionable. Would Lek or the Vet notice such things? Who else is in a position to be that close to Bai Toey except her mahout? I dare you to imagine the expression on my face this morning when I discovered the new reality of her tail. I would alert them via email if I thought they'd care. Yesterday and today is the first time I've looked at new videos in a very long time: I've posted occasionally in past mos. only to inform some of my playlist and its important, informative description, but I've steered clear of the old viewing patterns so as not to get sucked in to the old emotional investment, but what do I find today but our precious Bai Toey having been exploited through pain and the loss of most of her tail hair being plucked from her, as if she were a thanksgiving turkey. 😡🤬 *_IT'S WRONG!_* I don't know what to do; someone needs to make it stop, but who?? I have no more room in my playlist description to add the information or video URL of her. 😡 We can't stand by without notifying someone. We can't be silent. Who can we tell? Who might care?

@@gabe-po9yi My reply to you yesterday isn't here. Ryan, Lek's SEF director, replied to my email, claiming that Wan Mai bit Bai Toey's tail, claiming that she pulled all that hair out by the roots 🤔🤨🤨 but *_elephants don't even have front teeth! There is no possible way that Wan Mai or any other elephant could have pulled any hair out by biting._* It's a laughable lie, hilarious, if it weren't so sadly devoid of respect for reality! It is plain to know that it was the mahout that plucked her tail-hair out, not Wan Mai.
