3 down-the-wire tightly-contested games, 2 going to OT and resulting in epic comeback wins. Lots of memorable plays and clutch shots, including a championship-winning buzzer-beating 3-pointer. DEFINITELY THE BEST UAAP FINALS SERIES EVER.

This is definitely one of the best winning shots in UAAP history!

JD's quarterbacking for UP during the whole season...shades of Hector Calma, Dindo Pumaren, Olsen Racela - pass first and excellent orchestration of plays (spacing and on defense, talaga kita mo yung attention niya to details) - Ron Jacobs will love this guy. He was visible in all UP victories (crucial steal against DLSU on final four, Spencer's game tying 3 in game 1 was off JD's assist, Lucero's 3 in endgame was off drive and kikout from JD) --- i mean look at all the gihlights from all their games,,,,

UP peaked at the right time. Let us not look at this 3rd game only. The whole series as a whole, if UP didnt win the 1st game, there wouldnt be a 3rd game!

It all started with their win vs ADMU in the last game of the elims. People thought that was a non-bearing game standings-wise, but it did great wonders to the collective psyche and confidence of the UP Maroons. It proved that Ateneo is not invincible. It proved that UP can beat Ateneo. It proved that UP has what it takes to win it all. And they did just that!

been watching UP from the times na puro 0-13 kayo for straight seasons ... to this. congrats UP!

the last 15 seconds gave me goosebumps as the UP crowd began cheering as if they knew they're going to take home the crown after so many decades of waiting. Even the commentators are speechless on how it was reclaimed. Kudos mga iskolar ng bayan! Kahit ito lang ipanalo natin para sa bayan!

Both team really did a great job! That was intense game for the finals. I want to praise SJ Belangel from Ateneo because he really carried the game for his team! And ofc from UP, Cj Cansino and Cagulangan, those 3 points shots is just chef's kiss, number one reason why did they got the championship after 36 years. I can't wait for the next season!!!!

Most thrilling finals I've ever watched. Like none of them wanted to give up. Very classic game! A great come back treat of UAAP to the community, school, students, alumni and basketball fans.

That screen was so crucial. If that screen was not set, the game winning 3 pointer could have been blocked.

The commentators just made a perfect cover and made the game more exciting.

What's surprising about this UP squad is that most of they're roster is still young and their championship window is still wide open.

The shot of Cagulangan in the dying seconds of the overtime has cemented his name in the annals of UAAP history. It made me remembered a player name Ronnie Magsanoc who used to take the clutch 3 pointers for the Fighting Maroons when they claimed their first ever UAAP Championship in 1986. Proud to be a Maroon here.

Need to give some credit to Cansino to make their hopes alive. 🙌

This is one of the best finals game in College I have ever seen.JD Cagulangan with a cold blooded trey to give U.P. the championship after 36years !

[12:40] What a 3-point clutch shot performance. UP survive for the champion in 36 years. Friday the 13th + UP Jersey #13 (JD Cagulangan) with 13 points = first-time champion (with a 3-point clutch shot). "Utak, Puso!"

Poetic justice. Its like watching Shohoku beat Kainan at last. Got this sense of satisfaction to see how the perrenial pushovers topple the perrenial favorites, the mighty Ateneo Blue Eagles. For years, we have been the talk of ridicule and much criticism, now we stand as Champions. For Woody Co, Marvin Cruz, Migs De Asis, Martin Reyes, Mike Silungan, Mike Gamboa and the previous UP Squads, victory at last.

Happy for CJ Cansino. Even while playing with only 1 good knee (can't even stop Mamuyac's drive, with his mobility severely hampered @2:55), playing his first minutes in the Final 4, still nailed big shot after big shot for UP.

can still remember season 81 when we lined up for tickets just to watch upmbt matches. big led screens set up across the campuses to support the team. getting into final 4 was mega big deal back then but now we're champions. 🤧 so proud.

Those last three plays for UP includes Cagulangan and 2 for Diouf. That last shot, Ange decide not to commit to Cagulangan to prevent another possible basket from Diouf on his roll to the basket. Either way its for UP after 36yrs. Congrats

Takeaways from UAAP season: -UP defense is next level, would love to see this extend to the next level(PBA, Fiba Asia, Fiba WC etc.) -Ateneo is beatable team especially when countered with an overloaded opponent. -a Gilas team comprise of UAAP stars from ADMU, UP, DLSU, and Abbarientos from FEU, can compete against the very best of Asia, at least. -coaches Tab Baldwin and Goldwyn can be a deadly duo when working together.

All observations on point...UP' s defense is anchored on fundamentals. Take note how they box out, especially the big men. Cansino at 6'4"/6'5" is a good wing. But how I love how Belangel orchestrated that Ateneo offense--shades of Johny Abarrientos, Hector Calma, and Jimmy Alapag..Sadly, his efforts fell short. Speaking of coach Monteverde, he could be the next Gilas coach, if MVP does not like Coach Tab anymore...He adjusts well, he understands the strengths and weaknesses of his players, and he doesn't play favorites--the best talent is used at the right moment, giving confidence to all his players, in other words, he has instinct.

UP's defense is straight up man to man. It shows the individual superior individual defense of the players. That can be taught during practice. But the players should be disciplined, intelligent and patient in learning how to defend that way.

@@benzengap6804 Yeah and one thing to note also most importantly is how UP DEVELOPED its defense throughout the course leading up to this. In the regular season they were middle of the pack when it came to OFG%, it was evident how they were struggling at switching on defensive assignments which led to uncontested shots. The fact that they forced 20+ Ateneo turnovers in Games 1 and 3 is the mere culmination of that development, and against what was believed to be the flawless offensive genius of Tab Baldwin.

The long pass to Alarcon was from Lucero, not Diouf.:) I watched all of UP’s games this season. The good thing about UP is everyone stepped up when needed and their stingy defense is just so effective. Powerhouses like Ateneo or La Salle, who are very good in offense - one must beat them with very good defense. UP’s last game in 2nd round against Ateneo, Spencer’s 3-pointer to tie the game turned things around and eventually gave them the win, ending Ateneo’s 39 games winning streak. UP’s Final four Game 2 against La Salle: down 13 points in the last 4 minutes, Alarcon & Rivero slowly cut the lead and in the last 2 minutes, Tamayo lifted the team. Finals Game 1 against Ateneo - Lucero stepped up to cut the lead and Spencer’s 3-pointer tied the game, resulting into an overtime. Lucero and Rivero pulled away the Maroons for the win. Game 3 Winner Takes All - Cansino’s three pointer was clutch and crucial. It led the game to overtime. And of course, JD’s shots and assist to Diouf will be known as one of the best in UAAP finals history. Hats off to the Ateneo Blue Eagles - beating them in this series was a tall order. Belangel - you’re the man!!! I was from the era where the Maroons were always at the last place of the standings, so it was such a delight to see this “Atin’To” movement finally being fulfilled. ✊🏻

I remember that we had a bonfire because we had one win in 2014. Fast forward to 2022 and we finally won the championship. Atin to talaga!

@@joeyzaldarriaga8408 Kouame anticipated another pick and roll to Diouf so he covered the drop, meanwhile Mamu got delayed due to having to go over the pick, hesitated a bit because he thought Cagulangan was gonna be thinking drive (maybe also a kick to Alarcon in the corner should Dave close out), but Cagulangan punished with the stepback. It was a literal microsecond of a defensive lapse.

Finals for the ages, regardless of basketball league in this country. Saw the '86 championship and the drought that followed. Finally after nearly four decades and it can't be any sweeter!

Congrats UP! The championship could have gone either of the Team, but this one's for UP! One of the best series I've seen since I started watching basketball in TV 15 years ago. Great Defense & Offense, Passion, Grit, Heart, No chippy plays, No brawl, No taunting. Just two teams on a business wanted to win a championship. Everything we want to see in a basketball game was shown by these two great Teams in a single series.

To think, this is Monteverde's first year in UP... He didn't play favorites to his former baby NU players . He used the best available talents. He played his strengths and hid his weaknesses at the right moments. Plus, his players were more hungry than the Ateneo players. They also played with poise and much intelligence in the clutch moments, especially Cagulangan.

that was a hell of a game! i was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Now i can definitely say, from cellar dwellers (not winning anything in the elimination rounds) to UAAP Champions!!!! What a cinderella finish!
