Up Close and Center Stage | Cast Reunion benefiting American Ballet Theatre

Ойын-сауық

The stars of Center Stage -- Amanda Schull, Zoe Saldana, Sascha Radetsky and Ethan Stiefel -- are reunited for a virtual fundraiser in support of American Ballet Theatre’s Crisis Relief Fund. Moderated by “CNN Newsroom” anchor Poppy Harlow, the cast discusses memories of creating the iconic film, which hit the big screen 20 years ago in 2000.
The American Ballet Theatre’s Crisis Relief Fund provides aid for dancers, production crew, musicians, ballet staff, and faculty, who have been impacted by cancelled tour engagements due to COVID-19. The American Ballet Company is not for the fainthearted, it's for the most gifted and beautiful ballet dancers alive. But you'll need more than mere physical prowess and determination to succeed. You'll need to deliver the goods at CENTER STAGE. Jonathan Reeves (Peter Gallagher, American Beauty), the ballet company's owner is evaluating this young tight-knit group of students as they face the growing pains of their ambitions, romances and heartbreaks which prove to be both invigorating and difficult. The results are a celebration of beauty, bodies, and ballet.

I love that even though Zoe is the bigger star right now she seemed so humble. She allowed the others to shine and talk more, especially since they were the stars of Center Stage. They all just seem to be really cool people. Love the movie and the reunion! :)

In the ballet world you would certainly know the others more than you would know Zoe. As a former ballerina myself who danced with the Bolshoi and with Balanchine s company in Geneva Switzerland, I can say that I am more aware of the dancers than I am of actors. Just thought I would bring to the table the fact that everything is relative.

  • @GleamyGleamyGlamGlam

@@secrets2youth I definitely understand that. 😊 But, the keywords in your statement is ballet world. I didn’t say a particular niche for her because Zoe is just the bigger star in the world. Whether one is a ballet dancer or an academic, most people know her because she was a main character in one of the best selling movies of all time, Avatar and of course her Marvel roles. But, appreciate your response. 😊

@@GleamyGleamyGlamGlam I suppose it is difficult to comprehend people who live in a different world than others. I had no clue who Zoe was. I did see Avatar but I did not remember her from that. As a dancer we are so focused on dancing and also workout 6 hours daily 6 days a week. Our world is often filled with learning about companies and dancers and being the best we can be in the short time we have as the life of a dancer is truly not long. A lot of dancers don't take a lot of time to do much in the World outside of the dance. I was often considered to be weird to other dancers and called the most worldly because I was interested in movies and health and fitness and communication and history and world events etc etc. I didn't have anyone to share these things with as a ballerina because most of these things just weren't of interest to anyone else. In the dance world or to say it another way, those of us who are professional ballerinas or ballet dancers truly are aware of other dancers and it's maybe like athletes are aware of other athletes and may not be as aware of actors either. I'm simply trying to give you an opportunity to recognize that to me and to maybe others like me, the dancers are much more stars than Zoe is. THE KEY WORD IS RELATIVE WHICH U IGNORED.

Amanda looks the exact same! (I mean they’ve ALL aged insanely gracefully) but I remember seeing Amanda (Jody) on the big screen when I had just turned 14 & falling in love with her & the movie. Zoe was such a force in the movie and of course, being 14, Charlie had me swooning! ❤️ Such beautiful characters and people.

Ugh this just melts my heart seeing all of them together again, and hearing all the amazing things life has brought to them! That movie is one of my comfort movies and I just watched it earlier, and it popped up on my KZread feed, so I was thrilled to see a reunion with some of my fav characters from a childhood movie! I was so obsessed with this movie I swear I knew the end dance by heart I did this so much! This movie will forever be one of my favorites, and so powerful message with Jody telling the “king of ballet” and not giving him a chance to criticize her because she knew her worth as a dancer, and as a person, and Zoe the same way with her dancing for herself, and taking the pressure off of herself, and just being herself, and seeing that she was good enough all along! Can’t say enough good things about this movie, and thank you all for making center stage what it was! ✨❤️

Omgsh I love Zoe so much more from this interview!!! The humility even though she is more generally well-known, the obvious equally high respect for a different art form (ballet) than the one in which she finds herself successful (film acting), the message of equality both in terms of representation and of wanting to hear from her Anglo-American colleagues as well as speaking up herself… such grace and poise. I adore her. I saw Center Stage in the theater at 14 years old on a break at a dance convention. As a Latina dancer, Zoe was so inspiring and actually Amanda was just as much because I did not have the typical dancer body type. I love this so much!!!

When I was 5 years old I went with my aunt to pick up my cousin from ballet rehearsal and I absolutely loved it. What I know about ballet are from years of watching documentariies about the greats like nureyev, fonteyn etc. I've encountered some videos talking about the "lazy" dancing of misty copeland about skipping or changing the most difficult parts of some roles like the 32 fouettes? in swan lake? Anyone with dance or ballet training here? Coz it seems like amanda schull near the end of the recital was able to pull it off?

28:08 If anybody has proved that she's better than all that, it's the woman who brought Neytiri to life. I've been a fan of Center Stage for almost twenty years, I love all the characters in it. Eva stood out because of her brashness and her journey that was mirrored by her foil, Maureen (played by Susan May Pratt) --- Eva the parentless try hard, Maureen the polite chosen one with with a mom you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy --- and so while Zoe is Neytiri to me she'll also always be Eva. The three girls, Jody, Eva, and Maureen, their journeys are really special to me and I love how Center Stage balances their stories with such care and grace.

Well--ballet, you need to be lifted. I'm plus size and I wouldn't attempt ballet, either. You don't need to be stick thin, but you need to be light enough for the partner to lift you without breaking his back, too. If it was about just how you'd look rather than the logistics of partnering with somebody in things that include difficult lifts, then you're better off knowing they suck.

It was an odd moment in the interviews when “male stereotypes” was basically fluffed over. Much discussion on the issue of diversity in the ballet world but it appeared acknowledging the powerful influence of gay men and the center stage they have historically taken was never mentioned. These men faced incredible barriers and suppression. It would have been more authentic if this was included in the discussion. It would have been valuable to young male dancers.

I was like : "😐😐😐😐😐...😶" "is that a type of soup you want me to pick up for dinner tonight? Or some type of fried okra?" He said "Is what okra and I've never heard of that soup is it like Jambalaya or gumbo?" Then I said "wait what the??? How do you not know you just asked me about it..." We both were like😶😐😶😐😶😐😒. Then I was like "wait pause then movie for a sec...ok now what the hell are we talking about" he asked what I thought we were talking about and is said "didnt you say something to me about canned soup when you got home?" 🤯🤯 he's all "WOW!". Then he repeated what he did when he first came home and is said "oh shit dude🤯☺️😆😂🤣🤣🤣 I thought Jamiroquai was a type of southern soup or stew that you can buy in a can I had no clue that its the name of the artist and the song is called Canned Heat.." All he could do was look at me sigh shake his head and ask if there was a name for what the hell was wrong with me. We smoked a joint and if said "no they don't have a name for whats wrong with me yet probably because there's no excuse for why I am the way I am and why im only allowed to donate my body and mind to science fiction"....he paused and. Busted up laughing so hard it made his abs sore the next day. They say the key to a healthy and successful marriage is laughter. 😇🤓😁

So much polítical correction and the same apeach that everybody say… . They can talk more about personal experiences regarding the rasism in ballet Word or discrimination (as in any work envirorment), that apeche about activism and be more inclusive is a very sensitive and complex topic. It involvs so many áreas of knowleg I heard mistys intervews and i think she victimize her self a leatle and talk with a lot of resentment but she actualy have an amazing feets and beautiful lines so that realy compens the fact that she have black race desendens. Actualy i think she was promoted a bit because she start to talk about the lack of “black” dáncers in clasical dance world so…. I think that if misty were chosen when she was i leatle more young she woud have beign able to perfome bettee than now that she is in her therties…. From iruguay!

😴🥱 this was boring. I wanted a reunion of center stage with more stories like Ethans. The interviewer talked too much and I’m soooo tired of hearing this topic for the 500th time. I was really hoping to get a break from it all and be taken back to better times. Everyone should watch Megan Fairchilds interview with Amanda! It was great and you won’t zone out once! I promise.

I agree! Why did they need to bring the race conversation into this? We wanted to hear about the movie and the casts memories from filming. People are forcing the subject of race into every conversation to try to sound 'woke' and as if they are good people but it just feels fake.

@@dancingdani25 Yeah it seemed to be making them uncomfortable. Most reasonable decent people know that racism is terrible. Having a ballet company filled with all sorts of talented individuals of different ethnic backgrounds could be wonderful. But the movie wasn't about that. If they wanted it to be, it could have been about that. So this was a shoehorned topic just to go alongside what was happening at the time in the world with all the racial division. Maybe just seeing people as people and weighing talent by talent is all that's necessary in the ballet world. I'm sure people didn't watch this to be reminded of something as complex as racism in America. Clearly the cast didn't have an answer to why or a solution to racial diversity in ballet. While hard topics can be important in interviews, I'm sure people didn't watch this to be reminded of racial turmoil in society today.

this was, like, not about the movie at all. :( :( i wanted to hear stories about when they made the movie, not a bunch of white people commenting on race. i was so looking forward to this. oh well. also, in the thumbnail i assumed the shaggy looking guy was the director. what in the world, ethan stiefel?!

I kind of agree. I wasn't expecting that. There were plenty of hard topics raised in the movie and race wasn't really one of them. I wonder if there are just more White people trying out to be professional ballet dancers than there are people from other races. And since the companies only accept so few at a time, it seems the odds could be more in the favor of people in the larger pool. I don't know and it seems like it's a complex conversation to break down and root out. Perhaps race is just another factor ballet dancers are judged on, just like the other factors like age, body shape, feet, weight, beauty biases, etc... Seems like a very specific exclusive industry. I don't think anyone needed to know about the interviewer bringing her kids to protests or how many white people she saw there. That's so politically divisive on top of Zoe pressuring the rest of the cast to consider the topic seriously, seemed like it was beyond what the interview should have been about. A reunion isn't really the best time to put everyone on the spot about racism. Important discussion, maybe not the best time.
