Unwin rails for pop-top roof rails on camper (Austops roof)

Комедия

Using Unwin rails to mount a roof rack on a camper.
Roof is an Austops scissor hinge on a Vauxhall Vivaro 2005 SWB / Renault Traffic / Nissan Primaster.
I highly Recommend Austops for their product and great customer service.
The Unwin rails are bolted through roof using an M8 sharp drill bit with countersunk heads (less than 2cm) bolts onto washers.
The location of the rails puts them inside the recess of the roof (under the headliner) beside the structural chassis for the roof.
The rails are sitting on strips of mastic strip; I have fitted these before and i could not get the rails off the roof after sticking them on so it makes a strong bond. So just 4 bolts per side should be fine.
The roof should not be loaded with more than 20kg (Austops tell me) But that's enough for a surfboard or surf kayak also a sola panel.
The roof rack used is a Rhino system with the short uprights. It does put the van over 2M when they're on so I take them off for easy parking.

If you want to keep using multi story car parks you could bolt your roof bars onto the Unwin seat brackets. Then just pop the bars on and off in a click. The rails are below the roof profile so you don't need to lose any clearance.

Hello, I went direct to unwin in the UK. They can cut to length the lengths you require.

Great idea. I have been looking to do this myself. How did you seal the rails underneath to stop leaks through the roof?

Hi, sorry for the delay, I used strips of mastic under the rails then washers to crank it down. Once it sets you really cannot get them off, I tried when I had the roof replaced.

Great video, and good idea with the roof however, im trying to make my rock and roll bed slide on rails, just wondering on your one how you go about sliding it, do you have to manually unbolt or is there a quick release way? Thanks in advance

Hi Chris, I have the long ‘t’ bolts and using a socket I keep in the van I slacken then off, then push the seat forward (it does take a bit of doing) then tighten them up again. You could maybe use their (unwin’s) quick release system with wheels attached but I never saw the need and I don’t have a welder to make them fit. I think the bolts are M8 if you can find some quick release nuts. Best wishes...Ant

Anthony Hodson, great thanks for the info Anthony, I'll get onto that, probably just do what you did, although I've just seen they do a "camper van kit 2" on unwins website, which has quick release. Umm. Thanks again.

Lucy Jennifer Hi! I've just used the long reach unwin 't-bolts m2 40mm' to attach the rails to the seat, does that answer the question? You could use the existing holes in the rock and Role bed as the basis for where to put the rails but be sure that doesn't cause problems underneath the van. I don't think it was a good idea to do that in my van but I don't recall, perhaps I just wanted the rails to be central for motorcycle strapping reasons.

Hi there Good job there. Well done. Whats the model of your roof bars? Just checking to get the same one that would have the brackets that fit the rail. Thanks

Hi, thanks for watching. The roof bars are Rhino ones for a VW t5 transporter. They take a ‘delta’ bar. I see they’re about £88 a pair.

Hi, great setup. Where did you get the brackets to mount the rhino racks? I can't find them online.

Hi, I am not sure which brackets you mean? The little sliders with the bolts fixed in them were from Unwin and they seem to be called various things on the internet but ‘unwin t-bar’ or ‘unwin T-bolt’ will find them, they’re crash tested for wheelchairs I understand, unwin themselves will sell them too. The mounting under the rack inside was just ‘stainless penny washers’, it kind of looks like there’s a custom matched spreader plate but there is not it’s just the underside of the roof. the mastic that it sits on above was a role of flat mastic from a caravan merchant. Let me know if that doesn’t cover it and good luck with your project!

Can you please tell me how you removed pop top head lining ?

  • @anthonyhodson

Hi Jack, my lining was held up with screws so they were unscrewed to get access. If it had been riveted I could have drilled out the rivets then screwed in new locations, a bit messier, you could re-carpet if it were a problem. It was hard to spot where the screw holes were anyway. Good Luck!

Were the rails ok on the Austops roof... Did you carry 20kg.. Wanting to load a kayak

Austops know about it, they say you shouldnt carry much weight but knew about the use-case of a kayak. The mounts are just beside the structural beams in the roof so it seems pretty strong there. My view (not Austops) is that the roofs pretty solid when it is down and I'd happilly put up to 30 KG on the roof if it is down. just don't raise the roof with that on it (not that it'll stay up unless you re gas-strut it. Austops were really great and would probably answer your questions if you call them.
