I am not Portuguese and I don’t really understand the words but every time I listen to this particular song sung by Mariza the tears just flow. I am lucky enough to have been at a live concert when she took off all her technical gear and sang in the audience. She ended up singing very close to me and my late husband. It is something I will never forget.

"Oh people of my land" is a tribute to the land of malencolia, longing and saudade! The singer and the audience are so moved because they share the Portuguese experience "destiny that chains us all". "When you hear the groans of a guitar singing," it's like the melody is calling you home and "you could almost see it as a lullaby, but it's really agony". "This sadness that I bring with me, I inherited from all of you", is a reference to the melancholy at the heart of the Portuguese people and that is inherited from our ancestors ... the men who lost their lives at sea, the lonely women waiting at the altar , the shattered children, the emigrants ... This music embodies this feeling that all Portuguese can relate to and that is part of our core being.

Amazing analysis Scott! Thank you for doing justice to the Portuguese traditional song! Fado is all about longing and melancholy and you hit it smack centre! Great job! :D

Absolutely excellent commentary on this beautiful song. I'm Portuguese and this song hits hard. The lyrics, the music, and the emotional delivery define our Portuguese collective soul like no other song does. This is coming from a dude who was just listening to Tool and System of a Down :) Thank you, sir!

Fado is about Saudade, to me the best meaning to "saudade" is "the love that remains", that love can be sad, can be nostalgic, can be happy, but is always about something that you lost, that you dont have in that time.

Very good analysis. I've been a fan of Mariza for a long time and especially of this performance. It's interesting to learn the techniques she learned to deliver this beautiful sound. She is one of the reaons I decided to learn Portuguese.

Hi Scott, loved your analysis and comments on Mariza's performance which it's magical and unique. It's different than everyone sings, special and she should be more appreciated through more people who really loves music in it's core. Fado it's one of the most emotional, intimate and difficult genre of music to sing and it expresses a feeling that is "saudade" which is a word that only portuguese people has. ❤

I believe she cuts the words in the first part of the song because she got emotional as cutting the words helps any note coming off wrong while emotional. Normally she does this at the second part of the song but in this performance she got so emotional that she actually had to stop for a bit. Beautiful moment imo

Scott, first let me thank you for reacting to Portuguese music. Fado it´s a world humanity heritage, for UNESCO, since many years ago. Yuou did it justice, my friend. Thank you very much. I just wonder if you could fully understand, not only the lyrics, but the full meaning of what this is to us, Portuguese... The silences in between are as much important as the sounds and words... the emotion it´s so deep... If you want to listen another amazing Fado singer, I suggest you to search for Sara Correia - Fado Portugues (Sara´s the singer name). You´ll be surprised...
