Byzantine chain is a simple and elegant weave to produce.
Simple chainmail weaves are very satisfying to make with a bit of patience and practice.
There are endless weave patterns that can make a chainmail bracelet, this video is an introduction to the basic byzantine weaving technique.

    What a great idea to use large rings to instruct. It makes it so much easier to see and understand.

    My first ever big copper chain was this weave. I still have it. I only use pliers to make mine. One that cut, one that bent. Also known as the idiots delight!

    @@Nickscreativestuff The name means that one looks at it and believes it to be complicated but then when you make one it is quite simple and the maker feels like an idiot after making it the first time. I confirm I too felt like that. It’s a beauty of a weave! I like the squashed version you naked as well. One of my first jewelry making books was one about various silver chains.

    Oh I get it now … when I first came across one in a silver shop I was told it was a really rare chain from Bali that not many people can make … a few years later and a bit of research I can now make my own. A lot of people file it square after squashing the links … N

    @@Nickscreativestuff how do you squash it? I’ve seen a tool that does that by adjusting the rollers inside, you pull the metal through it. It is specifically made to squish necklaces. Very similar to drawing your chain through a series of holes in a board but it is one solid metal piece about the size of a book. The dynamis silver guy has one. You can make a square chain without Filling it with this chain.

    I start squashing the links oval with a pair of pliers, after re-annealing I then pull it through a wooden drawer plate to finish … N

    Hi Tish, the chainmail weave that is really good for caging beads is called round mail.     A lot of people put it through a rolling mill to give it a flat form. I achieved it by starting with a pair of pliers to squash the links, and then after annealing once more putting it through round holes in a wooden drawer plate … N
