I don’t always understand what the judges see, but I truly appreciate this artist’s talent. He sees things in the world that I do not and captures feelings on paper with pencil - things we all use all the time - but in such a way that reveal so much more. Despite the fact that these are drawings, they evoke so much emotion. I find myself so moved by them. He is truly something extraordinary, I think.

I think the final commission was pretty special. It captured the movement, fluidity and excitement of the Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, and yet, in contrast ,a huge amount of serenity and peace creating an amazing sense of harmony in his drawing. A very worthy winner.

I ❤ this! So ethereal and airy. Its like a quick glow through the light. Love the details hidden in the lines, for the viewer to discover. Well done, Curtis! I loved how they developed a warm relationship too. In the unveiling, Carlos went for a hug but the Britishness of the potential recipiebts left him wanting. He is a warm hearted, kind Cuban, people! Give the man a hug if he goes for one ❤

Two people who would never have met otherwise, connect so deeply with each other because of a (stunning) portrait. I like to think that Curtis and Carlos will long be friends now due to their many intersections!

Bravo! love the portrait and the amazing documentary detailing the relationship between these two men. Kindred spirits artistically, visually and spiritually. Love that the judges and museum took a chance on a project done with pencil. The Art world can get so snooty about choice of materials and tools used. As an artist that uses and enjoys both pencil and digital…I get that lot. I have many boxes of different brands and colors. Twenty first century modernization of tools offer pencils that come in so many textures and billions of colors. Any pre-20th century artist would have danced with joy using the myriad tools available to us now from the lowly pencil, spray paint, to high-tech computer and everything in between. This documentary has provided me with tons of inspiration.

To each his own. I don't really "get" this artist's work; up until the last 5 minutes I was very concerned because none of the sketches seemed to be capturing anything of Carlos. I think the final portrait was "OK"; good in some parts, too messy in others, yet I really didn't think the likeness was there as much as it needed to be. I think the **IDEA** of the motion-portrait was good, but it just looks too unfinished for my taste. But congrats to Curtis & for sticking to his own style.

I missed the season. Just tuning into the final. Haven't seen the final commission yet. Yet, from the brief showing of his other works during the season, this seems like a lot of intellectual posturing and blather. I'll acknowlege that the artist does capture the essence of his subjects. And that counts for a lot. But his technique leaves a lot to be desired. Just a bunch of different color scratchy lines. Much easier to execute than other mediums. And he never gives us a complete portraiture. Just partial. Again, easier to complete than bothering to deal with an entire portrait. And now, I'll wait to finish watching the episode to give my final comments..... OK, here goes! Just finished watching the episode. I'll start by saying I really do like the final piece. I enjoyed the process of watching the artist and subject develop together. Yet, the final piece STILL feels unfinished. I understand that is his particular style. Everything is intentional in his haphazard way. But I'm STILL left wanting more; a more developed, realized expression. From the brief showings of the other final studies he was working on at his studio I preferred those, especially the first one which showed two heads. Anyway, I think he's stopped midway in his process of evolving as an artist. I do see some attempt to stretch and try new methods and approaches in the final piece. Hopefully, he'll continue to evolve and his sketches won't continue looking like mere sketches, but more complete, fulfilling, finalized compositions that still do incorporate his uniquely "skethcy" approach . . .
