Unveiling the Beauty of Ardhanariswara in Odissi Dance

Ardhanarishvara stotra describes the co-existence of masculine and feminine energies in the complete being. The Ardhanarishvara is the deity in a single form of Shiva and his consort Parvati representing the synthesis of these energies. The right side of the body is the male Shiva and the left is the female Parvati.
Ardhanarishvara illustrates how the female principle Shakti is inseparable from the male principle that is Shiva. Parvati is as fair as the Champak flower while Shiva’s body is smeared in ashes. Her long hair is tied in a bun while his flying matted locks falls on his shoulders. She is adorned with tinkling anklets and sparking gold jewels while he is adorned with snakes. She wears a garland of flowers while he wears a garland of skulls. She is draped in beautiful garments while he is Digambara; or a naked yogi. She is the mother of the universe and he is the father of the universe. She is Parvati and he is Shiva..
The Ardhanarishwara Stotra is set to Raag: Raagmalika and Taal:
Taalmalika.

The music for this piece is by Pandit Bhubaneswar Misra (the first stanza only) and Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi. The magnificent nritta bits are composed by my Guru Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra. This item was composed for Sanjukta Panigrahi in 1979 (September, to be precise), in Guruji's Samanta Sahi residence. I was present the very evening the first stanza of the music was composed, by Bhubaneswar Sir. Guruji was composing another rather magnificent 45-minute piece for me. It's imperative that credit is given to the musicians and the Guru. That's the law. It is another matter that there's an element called artistic 'integrity" - where we don't simply take dance pieces choreographed by the greatest of Gurus and do with them as we please. We may not tamper with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra's choreography. The field of sahitya and music are limitless. If we want to choreograph "Ardhanareeshwara," and not seriously violate Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra's choreography, we might certainly ask any Odissi musician to compose the music and nritta bits afresh for us. I don't think two men work. The point is lost. That said, it takes all kinds and interpretations.

@@avijit3178 It's best with a man and a woman. Visually, the message is delivered. That said, one woman can dress as a man and put on a fake mustache, and it's at least somewhat better.

They are perfect in expressing Ardhanareeshwara in my view . Both are very good especially the expression and bangimas( postures) of Parvati.
