Unveil! British Army Tank New Weapon Brimstone AJAX Overwatch

General Dynamics Land Systems United Kingdom unveiled a further variant of its best-in-class AJAX Family of Vehicles. The Brimstone Anti-tank Guided Weapon ‘Overwatch’ variant, demonstrated in collaboration with MBDA, could operate in the vanguard of the British Army’s future Heavy Brigade and Deep Recce Strike Combat Teams, providing vital force protection for the more dispersed force and ensuring the integrity of long-range persistent surveillance. The MBDA Brimstone-based solution Overwatch capability can be seamlessly integrated onboard an ARES vehicle utilising its state-of-the art Electronic Architecture, which is installed across the AJAX FoV and enables the rapid insertion and integration of new technologies and capabilities.

    The Ajax family of vehicles is actually pretty decent and the Brimstone is the best on the market, battle tested and far superior to anything else around. Yes, the Ajax is based on an older Spanish design, which is pretty decent to start with, but it's been improved on and putting the Brimstone on it is fantastic. I'm sure there will be people who will say "it's not a British designed vehicle" but to be honest, if you can take an already decent platform and evolve it into something that fits your own needs, who cares? Look at the Americans with the Harrier, they took an already excellent aircraft and tailored it to perfectly fit their Marine Corps. Everyone's a winner!!🇬🇧🇬🇧✌✌

    I could day the same thing about the AGM-114 Hellfire, went into service in 1984 combat tested since 1991. Hellfire foundation and inspiration for Brimstone. Recall Brimstone comes in only a Radar guided version, where as Hellfire comes in Semi Acrive Laser Seeker, MWR, and Imaging IR. Hellfires warheads are HEAT, Shaped Charge, Tandem Anti Armor, Thermobaric, Anti Personal Blast Fragmentation, but my favorite is the Flying Ninja Ginsu Guillotine Kinetic Warhead ( it dices, slices, chops and purees). And Hellfire also is the basis for the AGM-179 that will replaced the Hellfire in US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. And I find nothing wrong with the ASCOD 2 Ajax/Pizarro/Ulan. It's a modern architecture, that will be produced well into the 30'a and 40's if its accepted into US Army service as the OMFV and the MPF tank, it will become the standard western IFV/MICV, that will likely we adopted by Canada likely some middle east countries.

    There's an obvious reason for providing the AJAX Squadrons with this capability. Remember that AJAX is replacing SCIMITAR as the British Army's armoured reconnaissance capability. SCIMITAR, the recce variant within the CVR(T) family is a direct descendent of AJAX. AJAX, like CVR(T) is a family of vehicles providing different capabilities for a Recce or Deep Strike Squadron. Within the CVR(T) family, overwatch and anti-armour provision was delivered by the STRIKER variant. That vehicle was lost some years ago and provisionally replaced by dismounted JAVELIN teams working from SPARTAN. Having BRIMSTONE mounted on ARES would directly replace that need to have anti-armour overwatch for the forward scouting and screening AJAX recce troops. AJAX may have a powerful 40mm cannon, but it can't stop heavy armour.

    @@clivedunning4317 I came across it in 1989/90 whilst completing technical training. We were visiting An RO facility where 81mm Mortar Bombs were filled and we received a presentation all about it. I remember being very impressed but surprised that it wasn’t being taken forward. We were told that it was because D Inf didn’t consider it to be necessary, I asserted that RO ought to finish it off and start manufacture as they would be able to sell it overseas. They stated that they didn’t have the funding to develop the manufacturing facilities, plant and machinery without guaranteed sales to the MOD. My view was that it was so good that they should be able to create a market for it and the MOD would end up buying it off the shelf. Later, of course, it transpired that D Inf did want it but had to make hard choices between various projects and didn’t have the money to take it forward. By D Inf I mean them and all the relevant Army/RM requirements staff.

    @@reallyoldfatgit Thanks for that detail, makes things far clearer in my mind, I really appreciate you going into all the detail. Question for you: do you think with the advancements in technology over last 40 years it would make it easier to produce today; or, have advances in armour technologies negated the efficacy of a 81mm, top attack, munition ? TIA.

  • @reallyoldfatgit

    @reallyoldfatgit

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@clivedunning4317 Eventually it all boils down to the warhead, from memory Merlin had a straight forward HEAT shaped charged warhead which would have been effective against the thinner top armour of Warsaw Pact tanks such as the T72. Guidance/homing was provided by the emerging digital technologies which, these days, could be very much more sophisticated, targeting specific vulnerable parts of the target and not just its centre of mass. So, though it might be possible to up-armour an older tank to counter it, and a modern tank might be a more challenging proposition all round, it should prove possible to produce a system which is reasonably in-expensive and pretty effective. However, the problem with HEAT warheads is that penetration is related to calibre and an 81mm mortar is just 81mm in diameter. However, against any other fighting vehicle I think a very effective system could be produced.

    Just wondering why the video showed Russian BMPs at the beginning when talking about the equipment and not the threat🤔. Sometimes these videos are made up by people who don’t know their AFV recce🤨 As an ex Swingfire commander it looks quite good and I’m sure it can do the job it is designed for, but it’s no good giving it to the Tankies as if it hasn’t got a gun they aren’t interested in it; this was proven when they took over Swingfire from my lot the Royal Artillery. Give it to the Gunners who have a good and long history with guided weapons, Swingfire, Tracked and Towed Rapier, Blowpipe, Javelin and Starstreak👍

    The impact videos are filmed with no explosive payload. This is to demonstrate the accuracy of the missile, which would not be easy to assess if it was enveloped in an explosion. The test facility used by BAE uses US Army surplus chevvy pickups as a standard accuracy targets. Terminal effects tests are often done on what appear to be concrete filled shipping containers.

    How is the Ajax 1st in class, the Britts seem to call anything they make "World Beaters or 1st in Class. I would say the Puma, T-15, K41, Hanwa Redback AS21 and Namer have a leg up on the Ajax, all are newer platforms with better more powerful engines armour and crew protection ( T-15, K41 and Namer having active protection) then the Ajax, that is just an update of the 22 yr old ASCOD Pizarro/Ulan.

    It's all designed to impress UK voters, usually while also quietly cutting the size of the British armed forces (and budget). So, yes, it's absolute rubbish but if it delivers a few extra votes to the current government that's all that matters. Defence companies aren't above issuing sycophantic press releases either.
