Untold Pacific History | Episode 1: The Dawn Raids | RNZ

www.rnz.co.nz/untoldpacific
Untold Pacific History is a dynamic, often provocative, but accessible account of New Zealand’s relationship with the Pacific, and the broad impact it's had on NZ’s own history and relationship with Pacific peoples in Aotearoa today.
Of the many events affecting Pasifika people in Aotearoa, the dawn raids story is overdue to be told. Long whispered about in secret family conversations, people have heard the words "dawn raids" but not about what really happened.
In this critical examination of a time little-known in NZ’s history, this piece features key talent involved in the infamous NZ government dawn raids regime: from a Samoan policeman at the forefront of the raids, to the personal stories of families impacted in this time.
This episode explores the landscape of Aotearoa in the 1970s and the global political factors that led to the economic decline that turned the tide of public sentiment against illegal immigrants.

Yes I remember this when I grew up my Mother and Aunt talked about this how dogs was chasing them just for being brown skin walking through the shopping center. They were living in Onehunga she was working as a merchanist Very sad yet Pacific islands people hard working in NZ during these years always asked to see their passport if they were over staying in NZ 😭

It was just as bad or worst for us Pacific Islanders in Aus, especially Sydney. It was very sad seeing our fellow Islander bros and sistas getting thrown into paddy wagons after home dawn raids or work places. After a few years, it was the Asians turn. The racist palagi Aus Federal coppers had no empathy !

Thanks RNZ, good to talk about it in reflection - some great memories of my mum dealing with the Aussie police at the crack of dawn giving them the bum steer, and then would have a good islander laugh as they drove off.

This is a blackeye on New Zealand history. Initiated by the Labour party and continued by National.

NZ government (all sides) needs to acknowledge the wrong, apologise for it, and ensure this is part of our shared history so it doesn’t happen again.

That Muldoon era of Government was most probably the worst we've seen in this country, and a lot of people suffered as a result.........plus I voted National.......in hindsight he lead us up the garden path unfortunately
