Dr. Hightower will always be one of my favorite directors, I was lucky enough to be able to perform in his choir (the same song too) this summer in the UNT choir camp. An amazing person, conductor, musician, and director. Thank you for everything Dr. Hightower!

Wonderful and powerful! And so good to see/hear the choir singing from memory. The close proximity of the brass and instruments for that live acoustic meant that they drowned out the choir frequently - even when the choir was singing fortissimo. Unfortunate that the instruments were not placed in the balcony some distance away. This hall would accommodate that scenario.

Some groups name their different choirs after different words related to music. My choir last year was called Cantabile and another was called Bel Canto.

North American Choirs seem to always empoy lots of vibrato, particularly with the ladies. The British choral style seems to be always straight notes. I prefer straight notes. You can appreciate the sum of the harmonic addition with with straight notes. Well produced video, thanks for posting.

As regards 'lots' of vibrato- as a Doctor of Voice, I can state quite clearly that the boy soprano 'straight tone' paradigm used in England/Cathedral tradition, often does irreparable damage to women's voices, if they try to duplicate that 'sound.' It's not that boy sops and altos don't have vibrato- it's just far less observable. Vibrato is actually the oscillation of a free larynx- i.e., the sign of a healthy voice; and to tell grown women to emulate the 'vibrato-less' sound of the English Cathedral tradition is bad pedagogy. Knowing Dr. Hightower and his choral approach, such a comment seems totally out of place. Alan knows how to achieve a very good choral sound, with 'just enough' vibrato to make tone alive.

Interesting viewpoint. Yes adults in English style choirs do sometimes have slight vibrato in SOME of their members, however it is hardly a difficult task for a properly trained singer to switch between vibrato and straight voice. In my experience, it is the people who have had little or no choral training who find it the most difficult to control. The operatic deep vibrato is good for solo work but terrible in a chorus. Barbershop groups sing straight notes all the time and the resulting harmonic “lock” is quite penetrating. That is what makes it work. Straight notes in perfect tune. As to your comment about damaging a voice singing straight notes, damage can occur from singing incorrectly... vibrato or not. Here is a link to the Trinity college choir version of the same work. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKB_k7aapKabcqw.html I will let the professionalism of that choir speak for itself for they were the ones who commissioned the piece. The choir director Mr Layton would know how to present it...Including the use of vibrato or not. I am sure Dr Hightower is a lovely man and I wish no disrespect to him or his body of work.

"The operatic deep vibrato is good for solo work but terrible in a chorus." That is a presumptive statement. Depends on the opera singer. Again, this fallacy that vibrato is somehow 'odd' or 'foreign' to singing, can be disproved when a knowledgeable and functionally healthy voice pedagogue approaches the choral ensemble- or the solo singer. (Also, listen to different eras of singers- try a soprano from the 1930's who had a fast hummingbird vibrato!) I've had to deal with both older singers [who used a pushed breath support which gave them 'old man vibrato' before their time] resume singing with a healthy oscillation in their production, as well as those who used their throat musculature to stifle ANY vibrato. Then there is the 'Babs Streisand controlled straight tone' sound. All are examples of vocal pedagogy, gone awry. All can be repaired. And should be.....

“That is a presumptive statement” no it is actually my opinion. “All can be repaired. And should be..” no this is actually your opinion. Your opinion of styles that you don’t prefer is expressed with untruths about voice damage. Quite simply, we are both discussing opinion here. If you really are a doctor of voice, I would recommend using your scholarly ability in exercising wisdom in forming your opinion and promoting honest debate when expressing your ideas. I would also recommend you look into different tuning temperaments and listen to a pure 3rd interval, which can never be heard in equal temperament. Maybe then you would appreciate the only instruments that can potentially dynamically keep intervals pure are fretless instruments (with no vibrato) and the Human voice with no vibrato. Maybe then you might appreciate the purity of straight tone singing. Much information may be gleaned when one looks into something deeper than their opinion would otherwise allow. Anyway that is is from me. I wish you every blessing in life.

Clearly, you don't- (Blessing, that is) "If you are really a doctor of voice" - how utterly presumptuous. I have my DMA, and I don't need some ass to question that fact! I made a cogent reply, and you didn't like it that someone called you out on your hubris, so then you have to justify your opinion, in light of my comment. Of course a 'pure third' interval is the hardest thing for a chorus to tune- I work with mine every rehearsal. But to treat the god-created human voice as if it were a tone generator, is unconscionable. I stand my my statements, and you are a jackass.
