UNSUNG HEROES OF ILLUSTRATION 5

The first in a new series about forgotten great illustrators I didn't think I'd be making. Life is full of surprises.

Really enjoy this series!! I stumbled onto your videos while exploring examples of illustrators of the Golden Age as i am hoping to emulate their illustrations for my own children's book. And yet...Although your compilations are visually inspiring, thoughtful, and important, I cannot help but feel a bit defeated before I even start...the world has not kind to some extremely talented people. The take-away for me is: artists must do their craft for themselves alone. The world is taciturn and will probably not embrace your legacy.

Hello and many thanks for your positive comment about the channe, and I hope it does provide inspiration. A couple of thoughts which of course you are free to ignore... You're right that the world can be unkind to those with great talent, but there are also many who have achieved great success who in technical terms couldn't hold a candle to the golden age illustrators. And even back then a 'proper' artist such as Edward Lear enjoyed far greater success with his scratchy doodles for children. And you are absolutely right that you do it for yourself in the hope that others will enjoy it. In the end it's dumb luck I think.

(p.s Would dearly love to see you produce a video of your personal observations/favourites of the illustrators. Would love to hear your opinion on where illustration sits as an artform (I get the sense Norman Rockwell felt he wasn't a "true" artist, as along with others you have profiled, seem to also appear, which I find unfathomable). I'm sure you have the respect of all those viewing your wonderful presentations, to share with us your thoughts, if you would like to. Pete Beard-Illustrations Hello, Pete… In the first place, English is not my native language so I’ll do my best trying to express my ideas. I am from Argentina (altough my name may suggest otherwise). I am 72 years old (born in 1949), and I have worked all my “working years” as an illustrator (of some kind or other). I am retired now, and very active in working for myself (illustrating my own things, so to speak). (Those of my every day life, of my feelings, of my mind…) When I started, in my early 20’s (in the early 1970’s) there were no schools for this kind of stuff (if you wanted to draw Comic Strips or Cartoons you had to go to an Art School -not many, though; and if you wanted to learn Graphic Design you had to study Architecture). So I learned by working, looking, and exchanging with my friends of this trade the “discoveries” we had made. And, of course, there was no Internet! The things that you are sharing in this “Unsung Heroes” series (so thoroughly and so lovingly presented) would, at that time, have blown our heads!!! They still do today! Thank you! Douglas Wright

  • @petebeard

Hello Douglas and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I did assume you were British or American because of your name and your English is so good. It seems we have quite a lot in common despite our nationalities. I was born in 1950 so we are about the same age and generation. I did study graphic design (cartoons were not encouraged) but worked as an illustrator for 42 years and retired in 2016. I also taught the subject at university for 15 years. I took a look at some of the videos on your channel and I see that you are producing music videos with your artwork, and I did a few cover versions of favourite songs when I first set up my channel but didn't get many views. That was when I had the idea to make videos about illustration. I'm very glad you found the channel and that you enjoy the content, and I hope you will continue to find it of interest. And good luck to you too from cold wet England.

Hello, Pete… Quite a lot in common, yes! I started free-lancing in 1973, aproximately. And retired in 2015. I came accross your videos in KZread, and started watching them as they appeared. Then I noticed that one was Nº 55 (or something like that) so I started from the beginning. It’s quite impressive the amount and quality of the material you are presenting! I noticed that in one of them (those that came at random) your name appeared in the credits of the music too. (But then I looked again in others and didn’t find it.) Those “of your favourite songs”, are they still available? In my case, I started the KZread channel in 2019. Most of my work was published, until then, in my two blogs (started in 2009 -so there’s a lot of stuff there). One has to do with children: El Jardín de Douglas. The other, with adults: Otros Douglas. (Both in Spanish.) Good luck to you too! Douglas Wright

Hello again and many thanks for the links to your blogs. I can see how your style is perfect for children, and like many of the best cartoons it gets right to the point. Sadly my poor Spanish means I generally don't understand it but it still makes for nice viewing. And yes the music tracks are still up there with pitiful viewing figures. If you search for pete beard 2000 light years from home or pete beard first we take manhattan that will take you to that obscure part of the channel with luck.
