    Unsolved Mysteries is comforting...but at the same time, reminds me of my very lonely childhood spent watching TV late at night so I didn't feel alone.

    UM will never get old, true! No other true crime show can reproduce the chilling atmosphere created by Robert Stack's narration and the different songs used during the segments, and no other show can duplicate its "the killer might be living in your neighborhood and might be looking through your window right now" vibe. Best show ever!!! 👍

    In the case of the missing father, if the military/CIA/whomever needed the father to disappear, that's one thing, but what a skunky thing to do to deny benefits to his family.

  • @ZeoViolet

    @ZeoViolet

    I agree completely. It seems to me that nowadays, when a person is a member of the FBI/CIA, and is married, their partner at least has a general idea of who they are, and it is their family that moves around constantly and keeps to themselves. It might be very hard to have to be raised in all that secrecy, but it beats being split up and a family being denied benefits. Besides, a standard stable family appearance is far less assuming than a lone man hiding out in a hotel room.

I miss my father so so much it’s been 17 years and it hurts so deeply to never be able to have fully reconnected with him and have that father & son relationship.😢💔😣 I’m very happy for Patty and her father’s reunion, certainly has me in tears. #ThePainNeverEnds 🥀😔😢🥀 Shame on the stepfather and mother of Patty. It's one of the weirdest cases I've ever heard. Who automatically shoots another driver in the face for absolutely no reason at all? And they said he was TAUNTING other motorists on the highway? Sounds like a deranged lunatic in the middle of some kinda psychotic break, hunting for a victim. Either that, or she was personally targeted. Don't see how or why though.

    @@RETROGEMS I don't think she is telling the whole truth. If, like me, you watch alot of road rage videos, you know brake checking and road blocking is classic road rage. We know she was running late, and the truck wasn't going fast enough, my guess is she laid on the horn, maybe flipped him the bird, then tried to pass, which he wouldn't allow. It obviously does not excuse the shooting, but I doubt she just came upon him and he started shooting. Just me.

    According to the history of the CIA entitled "Legacy of Ashes," during the era in which Ray Higginbotham disappeared the CIA dropped dozens of men into Iron Curtain countries. However, due to a security breach every single one of them was intercepted and executed. Apparently, there were sometimes security troops already positioned and waiting for these men when they were deployed. None survived. This is not the only story like this I've seen. In whatever capacity he served, it angers me that Ray Higginbotham's family was cut off from all benefits and he was declared a deserter. (The Army may have actually not known what happened to him.) In all likelihood he volunteered for an "off the books" intelligence mission, believing his family would always be taken care of, but in all likelihood the Dulles brothers (Allen and John Foster) put their own selfish priorities ahead of the needs of this man's family.

    It's possible that he was having an affair. He was "working long hours" and was increasingly distancing himself from his family. So there's a good chance that he just did what Eminem's dad did and simply split. The army said that he was a deserter...and that's probably what happened. He deserted both the army and his family. He probably changed his name and remarried (without divorcing wife #1) and started a new family. The new family was unaware that the old family existed. Over 25 years later, the daughter publishes that article in the newspaper and the article features her father's photo. The father, realizing that he might eventually get exposed if such articles keep getting published, calls up the daughter to 'put the kibosh' (so to speak) on the daughter's investigation and poses as some government agent named "Archangel" and invents a story about what happened to her father. Since men who just abandon their families to start new ones are usually narcissists, he invents this wonderful spy story that paints her father as Cold War spy hero and shifts blame to the government for why he disappeared. Archangel said "The article really rattled cages at the CIA and that it had really shook people up." My response: not likely. At that time, it had been over 25 years since her dad had gone missing. I doubt that there would've been anyone left at the CIA that would've even recognized his name. Just about everyone he worked with back in the 1940s would have been retired when the article came out. But if my theory is correct that Archangel is her dad and her dad's a narcissist, then it makes sense that he would describe the article about himself as being so important that it "rattled cages at the CIA". Archangel revealed that an attempt was made on her father's life and, he had been relocated -- and that the whole time her dad was just a few miles away from Arlington, VA. Does it make sense that the government would protect her father from professional killers and the Soviet government by hiding him just a few miles away? If you were the government and he was a valuable asset, wouldn't you hide him several thousand miles away? I agree that he remained just a few miles away after disappearing. If he was having an affair and ran off with the other woman, he probably stayed at her house -- which could've easily been just a few miles away. At 21:28 "Your father is alive." No dispute there. "His name is Nelson." That could be a name that her dad started using after abandoning his family and the army. Or a name that was never used but was made up on the spot to throw her off the trail. "He lives in a NATO country where there are high mountains and crystal clear lakes and a long time democracy." Yeah, that describes the U.S.A. (as well as other countries). So, basically, he still lives in the U.S. I'm no FBI profiler but the fact that he described the area using geographical features ("high mountains" and "crystal clear lakes"), tells me he's probably an outdoorsman who spends a lot of time hiking, camping, and fishing. A 'city folk' like myself would not use terms like that but would describe a country based on its cities and people and art and culture. If the government DID hide her father, and he truly loved his family, wouldn't he try to reach out to them sometime over the past 40 years? Couldn't he have contacted his family after the assassination attempts blew over? Also, if the government hid him, why didn't it hide his family with him?

The gun used in the homicide was test fired the evening of the murder. Knowing that, the police recovered the .38 bullets years later from the back yard. They then reinterview the ex-wife of the hired assassin who also had hired Hughes and was his manager. He was paid off by Dixon to murder Hughes. The hat was used as evidence for a conviction, but the gun and witnesses and the ex-wife were who solved the crime. The police didn't even think there was a murder for hire or payola scheme going on, when it was well known by journalists just hours after the murder.

    The point blank segment is crazy. Some crackpot shot that woman in the face for literally no reason and still haven’t caught him.

    Carol was very lucky that day, if that service truck did not come and then stop she would have been screwed.

    It's really depressing to think about the cars that passed right by "Carol"'s car and just kept driving. I know they couldn't see in, but the optimist in me thinks somebody would eventually stop and check to see if something was amiss about the car in the middle of the road (and the pessimist in me assumes somebody would have tried to steal it at some point.)

    Why is it that people who actually WANT to be parents are not allowed to and abusive assholes who should NEVER be around kids at all are often rewarded by being legally responsibe for them? FTW

    Robert Stack's birth year is my maternal grandma's birth year. Interestingly, she used to tune into this show and I'd stay to watch it with her and my dad whenever it was on. She knew immediately who Robert Stack was the moment he appeared and spoke. Respect to them both.
