The fact that you and grown unschoolers like Skyler are not the face of unschooling is a travesty. I get that rage runs the algorithm, but the ppl neglecting their kids and calling it unschooling get all the traction, doing such a disservice to what unschooling actually could do for kids 🙃

Skyler is such a cool human and very much representative of the unschoolers we know.

this is the first video i have seen from you and i loved what you had to share!! me and my brother were unschooled our whole lives. we heard a loooot of the "how are you gonna learn basic math/reading/social skills?" and "youre so lucky/im so jealous" condescention. i love how poignantly you demonstrated the purpose of unschooling. so many people assumed me and my brother had too much freedom or our parents werent strict enough, when they were literally just allowing us to choose our own education and interests. "whats wrong with learning academics through play?" - i looove how you said this!! coincidentally i also used to be quite a little gamer, and i learnt a majority of my reading, writing, and math through minecraft and other video games. my brother enrolled in community college at 13 (youngest ever in our local college!!) and i enrolled at 17. i just finished my sophomore year with a 4.0. if kids want education, they will seek it. if kids dont want education, they will focus on other things, and thats fine! if you force a kid who doesnt want education through school, it seems they will find workarounds to fit their ambitions. kids want just as much autonomy as any adult. most of the stigma against unschooling seems to be founded in some sort of appeal to tradition. to this day i still default to telling people i was "homeschooled" instead of unschooled - just to avoid the questions and presumptions that follow. its lovely to see a creator dismantle these misconceptions in a constructive and sweet way :). such an excellent video!! 🤍

I unschooled my kids and teachers were always thrilled when they came to workshops, classes, etc because they loved learning so much. They were fascinated, engaged, and excited. They hadn’t learned to be bored out of their minds with ridiculous and unnecessary work. And they had a much longer attention span. Both my kids graduated with honors from 1.the on-line high school and 2. the ged program they chose to complete their hs education with. Statistics show, accounting out for differences in parent education and economic levels, that there is no statistical difference in scores between unschooled children and schooled children. Children who are homeschooled with a curriculum test out higher than both groups.

I think I need more explanation on: "My four year old learned reading and math from Minecraft." Help me wrap my head around how they found out what a letter even is. I am suspiciopus partly because to this day my brother claims his four year old learned reading by himself picking up children's books when I full well know that the grandma taught him and got him a fluent reader at 5.

I didn't say that my kids didn't know the alphabet, nor that they had no phonemic awareness. Obviously, we read a lot of books to them. But that did not result In fluency. Using the Minecraft chat did.

My kids are naturally good at multipling eights. Me: how do you know THAT?? Them: Minecraft! (Shame Roblox isn't based off of sevens!) I need to learn more about Minecraft Education Edition - is parent-involvement needed?

My youngest sometimes calls me sensei ;-). I see education as a journey of exploration and guidance using whatever means.
