Unraveling the mystery of the Younger Dryas: Ice Age, Megafauna, and Human Civilization

#paleoanthropology #human #youngerdryas
In this video, we dive deep into the subject of the Younger Dryas. An interesting period right at the end of the last ice age when humanity was first developing. There is a lot of misinformation about this subject and here I hope to dispel some of the nonsense.

What do you think caused the Younger Dryas? Edit: Mark Boslough's criticisms of the Comet Research Group were relevant to the point he was making, which is to explain why the mainstream scientific community is skeptical of evidence for which raw data have been withheld and which is based on samples collected and prepared by Allen West, who they regard as untrustworthy. Because Boslough's criticisms are relevant, they are not (by definition) a case of the argumentum ad hominem fallacy. Mr. Boslough was very respectful when he reached out and we both agreed that more content should be made regarding this topic. I plan to work closely with him to address some of these more nuanced topics in the future.

Love your videos 🤙 When it comes to the younger dryas there's far too much misunderstanding of the types for forces we're talking about it an impact. This is a simulation Nasa Made of the creation of earth's moon. It shows the ejection of far more material than what the moon is composed of and the subsequent impacts back to the earth. Now, our solar system is in motion, and picture the impact with the same motions of a slingshot. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYagys58h9PSoc4.html

Constant exercise keeps you warm. In fact, if you wear heavy animal skins even in the winter while constantly on the move, you can risk overheating. In the Gravettian period, there were also surprisingly sturdy homes made of mammoth bones, with excellent insulation. Igloos maintained by the Innuit, which are not very far off from Paleolithic homes, can be up to sixty degrees warmer inside than the outside. At any rate, the sacrifice you have to make in order to have modern heating, where you must spend most of your time working at a meaningless and stressful job while isolated from family instead of finding a kind of spiritual and social satisfaction in your work, is not worth it. A heater cannot cure depression, loneliness, or a purposeless existence. A little bit of acute strife that can be dealt with collectively as a group swiftly is actually better for you psychologically than constant comfort, because as highly social problem-solvers, we evolved to enjoy it.

@@gadpivsI agree. Ancient people only ate about once a day. They weren’t consumed by materialistic things. In summers they probably worked in the early mornings or later evenings. And in winter they probably did the most at peak sunlight. And just relaxed the rest. I mean. It was still a hard life. But I think they probably lived happier lifes also.

«In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days. And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.» The Gospel of Jesus Christ - John - Chapter 1...

The big issue I have with the human pressure being the cause of the megafauna extinction in so many regions of the world is that the very continent where humans originated and have been the most prolific, Africa, has retained its megafauna to this day. Despite the immense population and demands for food by the population of Africa over the millenia and even to this day, its megafauna still exists. Africa has retained almost every megafauna species it has started with right up until the encroachment of modern men and modern technologies. It has only been in the last two centuries that we saw some of these species like the Barbary Lion disappear from the continent and impacts on the population of other species like gorillas become profound and push it towards extinction. This flies in the face of the idea that human kill all the large animals around them for food, does it not? Especially when it is clear that humans were preyed on by megafauna predators just like the other animals. Just like humans in Africa are to this day. Yet we are to believe that disperse bands of hunter gatherers managed to wipe out more resilient species over not just the North American and South American continents but also Europe and Asia as well? I do not see the evidence for this type of prolific murder especially when we found a huge population of humans living in N.America (estimated 4 million - 10 million in the 15th century) when it was colonized and also a massive population of large fauna species like bison numbering over 30 million. Either some other cause than human pressure is behind the extinction of the megafauna around the world 10,000+ years ago or we need to explain why these anomalies of thriving cohabitation large populations existed in Africa and pre Columbian N.America.

African megafauna evolved alongside humans and there was still a decline there as well with the arise of humans. Megafauna extinctions across every continent follows the arrival of man. If it wasn't true in North America, it would be an outlier.... But it doesn't. It follows the same pattern as well.

@@swirvinbirds1971 Making the arrival of humans the cause simply by correlating the extinctions with their arrival without any other evidence to support it is a fallacy. Especially when we now know that humans were living in N.America for a lot longer than previously believed. So the arrival hypothesis fails in this case because we know the Clovis people in N.America died out at the same time as the megafauna. African versions of the same animals types that existed elsewhere are not more adapted to deal with humans simply because they evolved from the same base ancestors in Africa. Humans outside of Africa were no different than those in Africa. If human activity, hunting techniques, and pressures were capable of leading to those types of extinctions elsewhere then there would have been none left in Africa either. It makes more sense that the rapid change in climate had more to do with the massive amount of die off. Animals that had adapted over hundreds of thousands of years suddenly had to adapt to a warmer climate in centuries. Only a few found a niche and survived that rapid change. Unless they were on the one continent that was largely unaffected by ice age changes, Africa.

Interesting discussion. In Europe ans Asia the extinction of the Neanderthals (40.000 years ago) also synchronizes with the influx of modern man in these continents. Neanderthals had been around for 350.000 years! So in Africa there were many more food sources for man than just meat. In colder climates meat will be the most prominent food sources. In Africa large herds of herbivors could form because of the abundance of food for these animals. There would ne no huntings pressure on these herds. Perhaps in South America the land was not very suitable for the formation of large herds (no vast grasslands?) and would hunting pressure have a larger impact. Why the bison survived while other animals perished couls also be a combination of all these factors.?

I'm a misanthrope, therefore, critical of everyone lol. I agree that pseudo-science does plenty of harm to scientific fields, but I also think it does plenty of good. It causes people to question accepted norms which can in turn force more careful and rigorous studies. I don't know if it's a proper balance, just pointing out that it's not all bad. We can learn a lot in debunking wild claims. I personally think the Younger Dryas was not caused by any one single factor, but many of the factors you mentioned combined, even the impact idea. However, I don't think the impact was one, single large object like a comet. The reason we have predictable meteor showers is that the orbit of Earth regularly takes us through rock clouds in space. Look up the Leonids and Orionids for examples of what I mean. A teeny tiny little variation in our orbit, the sort of variation we only know about these days due to advancements in sciences, could have no noticeable change in climate but could be just enough to take us through slightly more densely packed sections of those rock clouds during regular meteor showers. IF that's the case, combine a bunch of small impacts with the already happening climate change for a bunch of smaller, localized impact winter effects, add in some salt imbalance in the currents, sprinkle in a dash of vulcanism, perhaps any number of other factors to spice things up, and you've got a recipe something like the Younger Dryas. I mean, look at what just the wildfires in Canada are doing, with the smoke cloud reaching all the way to Europe, some of that blocking out some of the sunlight from reaching the surface. If fires like those were happening with everything else, it's easy to see not only what happened, but why the northern hemisphere was most effected. Point is, it's almost never one single trigger for such events, but a wildly complicated web of smaller things that add up to something bigger.

I agree with your viewpoint. The YDIH posits the possibility of multiple impacts over a period of time as the Earth moved through the debris of the fragmented Comet Enke from around 12,500 years ago to 10,000 years ago (which we still move through twice yearly today). These repeated impacts, likely on the ice sheet could have produced the multiple impact proxies all over the world. The author's dismissal of the impact site(s) and the black mat layer produced harkens back to the initial scientific dismissal of the Drs. Alvarez's discovery of the iridium layer at the K-T boundary that ended the reign of the dinosaurs...that is until the Chixalub crater was found in the Yucatan. There are a growing number of degreed scientists affirming this hypothesis due to the mounting data from all over the world. I appreciate that the author expressed his...possible openness to the YDIH, but the nuance seemed to be damning with faint praise. The black mat, nano diamonds, carbon spherules etc. were found in my home state of South Carolina by Dr. Albert Goodyear of USC at the Topper site-- and there is no geological record of volcanic activity at that time period in this region. There is much more intricacy to the YDIH than the author gives in his simplified description.

My version of the Impact theory is many, smaller impacts into the ice sheets, where some water is vaporized, and some melted. When a puddle of liquid water forms on an ice sheet, there's a runaway effect, because water absorbs sunlight and heats up, unlike ice, which reflects sunlight. Our solar system's path of movement around the galaxy takes 220 million years to fully orbit, so we're always cruising through different cosmic neighborhoods, with other Celestial objects moving along different paths- sometimes that means we get slammed into a debris field. On a side note, i wonder how much the ocean conveyor belt currents-system would be messed up by countless massive chunks of ice suddenly littering the north Atlantic? Maybe a sudden cold snap followed by runaway warming?

Milankovitch cycle is a fact. Combined with certain conditions on Earth, it might have different climate consequences for each particular point in time. And local variation effects on fauna and humans. Most likely, an extra terrestrial object hit the ice sheet in North America at some point, causing temporarily, massive flooding - but not to the extent it would have had any global effect, as pointed out in this great video. Thanks for sharing.

It requires a fair bit of patience, but it's a great way to trigger badly needed introspection in people who claim to care that their beliefs are true, but who don't do the work to make that true. There was no way a thinly settled human population wiped out that many species either. Not just mammoth species, slow moving and slow to reproduce, but also fast moving and breeding species like multiple types of horses. I am still waiting for a hypothesis that fits that observed fact. They all went extinct in too short a time frame for it to be anything but catastrophic.

What's always missing about the Younger Dryas and Ice Age conditions is where CO2 levels were. And mostly, what is the response of C3 pathway plants to these low CO2 times. The C3 plants like all trees and bushes and many grasses like wheat and barley just do not do too well in times when CO2 levels are below 250 ppm. When CO2 levels are below 250 ppm, it is also likely to be much dryer with precipitation lower by 6.0%/1C change in temperature. So, the colder times are also dryer. When CO2 levels are below 250 ppm, the stomata on C3 plants open larger to bring in more CO2 which allow more water to be transpired from the C3 plants. That means, when it is dryer with low CO2 levels, the C3 plants suffer from not enough precipitation. They suffer so much that they just do not grow very well or even reproduce that well. The trees, bushes, and many grasses just die out and they are mostly gone from the environment. The Younger Dryas was one of these periods. The plants that did really well was the C4 pathway grasses. The herbivores that could eat C4 grasses did really well. Humans were forced to either hunt and eat these herbivores or go back to eating grasses like one of our earlier ancestors (robust australopithecines) did (during one and two of the ice age conditions 2.7M to 2.2M forced australs into. Human ancestors had to either eat herbivores or grass. One branch went after the grasses and one went after the herbivores.) When the Younger Dryas ended, CO2 levels went back up and the trees, bushes and wheat and barley came back. The C4 grass herbivores died out because that grass wasn't around as much and they didn't eat trees and bushes, they ate grass. Humans noticed the C3 wild wheat and barley was growing really well (probably for the first time in 1,000 years) and they started harvesting it. Agriculture for the first time in 100,000 years. Before that, there was a short period of the Natufians about 14,000 years ago, but the Younger Dryas ended that. So the Mega-Fauna depended on C4 grasses which only grew really well when it was colder and CO2 levels were below 250 ppm. The Mega-Fauna died out at 14,000 years ago and then 11,000 years ago at periods when CO2 went above 250 ppm.

What an excellent video! My sincere thanks. FWVLIW: My hunch is that the Younger Dryas was for the most part no more than a transient consequence of a rapid warming trend at the start of this last interglacial, as suggested by it being far from a singular event. We ascribe it significance primarily because it's the most recent and so 'best' documented example, while being of most (recent) relevance to us. Somewhat associated events may each be examples of coincidence or causation. In short I would suggest much of the significance 'we' ascribe to the Younger Dryas likely says more about 'us' than provable reality - think seeing familiar objects in clouds.

Sea level rise is currently around 4.5 mm per year not 3 to 4 cm. And we are in the last 10,000 years of the warming peek of the 100,000 year Milanković cycle. So sea levels have been generally rising since the last minimum. The YD was a slight bump on this cycle and apparently had focused regional affects. However, sea levels were impacted and both lowered and rose because of it. It’s likely that some of the sea rise today (4.5 mm per year) can be attributed to both the YD and Milankovic cycle. Solar intensity and atmospheric carbon likely has smaller affects, today. It’s very likely that the YD was caused by Atlantic Ocean currents changing over hundreds of years. Although it’s also likely that other events were also factors in this relatively short cooling cycle (1000 years or so). It’s funny how the UN has changed the definition of climate change to human caused. Especially since most of the climate change history of the planet occurred when no humans or human like species existed. It’s all gotten way too political rather than fact based.

North 02 always has the best content. It’s always so clearly well researched and presented. This one must have been particularly difficult with how much research must have gone into it. Plus it’s pretty amazing that an almost 45 min video on a subject that could have easily been a dull recitation of facts, was instead fascinating from start to finish. All that’s to say, thanks North 02, for all your hard work and for covering ALL the facts.

thank you NORTH 02. I found this very comprehensive and illuminating. I happen to live at the bottom of ancient Glacial Lake Missoula in Montana the source waters of many (not all) of those floods into the scablands of eastern Washington. I am especially interested in the floodings of the Snake and Salmon Rivers in relation of paleo native sites such as Cooper's Ferry. This was long before the Younger Dryas event but can see how the many factors causing fragmentation and dispersal of both people and animals was operating nearly constantly. Again, thank you.

It’s like 30 statues in one, migratory people cannot carry around several different Momentos to remind them of their culture and family. I don’t think anybody believes that they were not spiritual or caring people… They would not have survived otherwise. All those little hand sized rocks and crystals that just look like rocks: they are pieces of art, and were carried to the present locations.

Great video. I love that it took a global look, not just at one region or continent. I learned a lot. I have found Randall Carlson's Scablands videos interesting. But then I got a look at the ones with Graham Hancock included. Graham seems so defensive and out there. Frothingly so. Constantly saying he was just "a Reporter" and that he was being demonized. I wondered where were the known, legit scientists at to back him up? I put Graham on the back shelf, figuring time would prove him right or wrong with more research being done. I still watched Randall as he sounded more like a man who knew his stuff. But the more I watched him, the more odd duck characters and really out there conferences I noticed him associating with, the more of a sinking feeling I got in my gut. I do admit, his theories sound like they could be plausible to a person like myself. Enough that there could be something there that is right. But I take everything everyone says with a large grain of salt and realize that science is constantly learning new things. I do not hold too strongly to any one thing as a cold hard fact without a lot of proof. That being said. Randall has interested me in seeing some of the erosional landscapes he has visited for myself. They do look fascinating in and of themselves. So in the long run I do not regret listening to him, but he has left me feeling disappointed in him. Your videos are very enjoyable to watch and I thank you for doing them.

I have no idea what caused the Younger Dryas, and nor does anyone else. While it is easy to knock any hypothesis, proving it is far more difficult, especially when the subject is the climate. I don't know what actual research either North02 or Milo have done personally, or are they quoting other's empirical evidence, if so the problem would be solved - it ain't, so no one has the answer, yet. The disappearance of the mega fauna is also to be solved, but there's no way it was caused by a bunch of natives with stone-pointed spears. Having lived half my ancient life in Africa, I have yet to see anyone taking on an elephant for food when better and easier animals are plentiful. One thing that can be said about Hancock is that he has spent more time in the field than pretty much anyone else, so calling him names is the a bit below the belt - and not very professiona, if that's what his detractors are claiming to be. So many paradigms have been blown about human history in the fairly recent past, it is a bit risky to put your head on the block - unless you can prove any claims beyond doubt. Just a few thoughts.

If you're referring to Graham Hancocks documentary, he doesn't claim everything as fact, as you'd know if you had watched any of his interviews or read his books. There is no established fact as to the cause of the Younger Dryas, which is why it's heavily debated. Perhaps being open minded is the best cause of action?

Very interesting and informative. There is always so much more to learn. The mysteries of the past are so fascinating and I love to hear a new take on the story. I think researchers that keep an open mind are more credible, as there are always new discoveries to add to the story. In these times where so many now have access to great scientific studies available on the internet, it allows all of us to be researchers. If a theory is treated as fact it can now be analysed by anyone willing to put the time and find truth. The time of knowledge being an exclusive right of universities is long gone. If an open minded researcher goes against the current paradigm, it does not go down well. But shouldn't all those who research and find true facts have a seat at the table. I feel like there would be more progress if there was kind collaboration instead dismissal of any ideas that don't fit the current dogma. You could learn from each other and together help uncover the amazing story of the past. Name calling takes away from this otherwise great video.

On the contrary ,the content is quite sloppy. He doesn't know the databases of paleontology, geology and archeology. The impact theory is the only theory within science. The others are religious and just average man's sci-fi ideas, in addition to the Electric universe which denies all geological work anyway so they are not to be taken seriously here. There is the antropological idea as well that hunters killed all game, but humans were way too few with no technology in the subarctic and arctic, and this hypothesis also looks away from the major climate changes that happened. The meteorite/asteroid impact range is the only plausible theory. It also fits with the astronomy records of meteor motions.
