Unraveling bdg's Perfect PokéRap

Ойындар

Is Brian David Gilbert's "Perfect" PokéRap actually perfect? Does it really matter that it included only half the Pokédex? Are we even still talking about the PokéRap anymore? This is how bdg predicted 2019's biggest video game controversy, and gave us an antidote to the discourse before we even knew we would need it.
Welcome to the Unraveled of The Perfect PokéRap Unraveled.

Game Score Fanfare is a show that celebrates music in video games, an aspect so overlooked as that's often the point: to work without you even realising it's there. I look at games through the lens of its score, discovering the unique perspective and roles that music can bring.

I love the fact, even if this is an April Fools, that you managed to merge both Unravel’s video style and your musical knowledge. This video was quite entertaining.

A parody with genuine heart and quality analyticism about a parody song that required extraordinary analytical skills to construct. And a fantastic selection of Pokemon music as it's soundtrack. You clearly have too much quarantine time on your hands.

Worth noting that the original definition of a masterpiece is more mundane. It's a piece of jargon from the guild system of trades referring to the thing demonstrating a journeyman's worthiness in becoming a master. Guilds had 3 main ranks - apprentice, journeyman and master. Apprentice meant the same thing it meant today - a student learning a craft from a skilled individual until they graduated to become a journeyman. Journeyman was taken quite literally - the graduate would be given enough tools to ply their trade and sent off into the world. Given medieval population distribution, there was often not enough work in the same town for both master and journeyman, so the journeyman would travel from village to village, doing work as they could find it until such a time as they amassed enough money to settle down. Typically around this point they would start working on their masterpiece - an item made specifically to demonstrate their skills to other guild masters. It would be judged, and if it passed muster, the journeyman would be promoted to master, at which point they were allowed to take on apprentices of their own. Long standing masters of their craft often made *far* more impressive things than their masterpiece later in life, as their skills continued to develop, the masterpiece itself was just proof that a journeyman had sufficient skills to be deemed worthy of teaching the next generation of guildsmen. Masterpieces varied widely even within a guild as trends changed and as journeymen found increasingly complex ways to impress their betters. Often, a masterpiece would not be particularly practical - a mason's masterpiece might be a piece of stonework that has ornate carving on every side, including sides that would be obscured by other stones if used in construction - but it gave more room to show their carving skills and how heavily they could work a stone without cracking it entirely. As far as I know, the art world was never really a part of the guild system - masons, blacksmiths, etc can all create astounding artistry within their trade, but the primary goal of those trades is a skilled but mundane task - tools that work well and last long, stone walls that are straight and stand up well, etc. But at some point the term was adopted, and has since been modified as the definition of mastery has become more exclusive - not merely skilled enough to teach, but the best of the best.

This is very interesting! I knew the basic idea behind the origins of "masterpiece", but not the details. I was tempted to use that definition and cite his Polygon application video as his masterpiece in that regard.

This is great! I appreciate that you chose to take April fools day to make a parody video of something you clearly appreciate dearly to show that appreciation and talk about how cool it is, as well as do something outside of your normal style. Very fun! Also, I won't lie - I got a little emotional when you were talking about Whimsicott. It's one of your favorites, you said, but it's my absolute favorite mon. I came back to the series in black and white, playing pokemon black on a borrowed ds, and the woman who is now my wife ended up bonding with me over the game and Whimsicott was a big part of that. To this day I still really love pokemon black and Whimsicott, and that's a big part of it.

I ... I didn't know I needed this video, but I did. Everyone (who is somehow close to pokemon and/or musicial analysis) needs this, in my opinion. And I love how this video about a masterpiece and gesamtkunstwerke (I love how you pronounce this one, great! xD) is a masterpiece ITSELF due to the presentation of all four core pieces throughout the video... because this analysis is skillful, creative, profound and wonderfully worked out. I mean, how meta is that?! I love it! (This is maybe not the video you want to be remembered for, but you definetly will be by some, I'm sure of that :D)

I know this video is an April Fool's goof (and my favourite sort, joke presentation, joke topic, exactly the same level of analysis as we've come to expect from you), but while I don't play pokemon, or any game really, competitively, I'm in favour of the split because you cannot have Galarian Weezing and it's neutralizing gas ability when you have Slaking, or doubles would completely break far beyond the... Questionable... approach to competitive balance Game Freak are known for. This allows them to have pokemon with abilities that would completely break things if they were in the same meta, they just have to make sure to not put them both into the same meta. What has been made in the past shouldn't restrict what you make in the future with any long running franchise, and the ability to rotate things out of the meta is an important tool for allowing that in ongoing games such as CCGs, LCGs, and - indeed - Pokemon.

The only thing we can tell about his opinion is that he doesn't mind the cut. Hell, from this video alone, you can't even tell if he likes SwSh or not. He doesn't say. I also have a burning hatred towards SwSh, but it has nothing to do with Dexit. In the same veins, claiming GSF has 'spit in the face of SwSh critics' just because he didn't mind the cut seems... very defensive?
