I really love the score by Zimmer. Especially the unreleased tracks that are floating around.

I remember hating this. Came across as wanky and trying too hard to convey (read as "beat you over the head with) a message. A lot of what seemed like annoying B-roll footage of scenery too. And this is coming from a Tarkovsky fan.

Knowing the kind of director Mallick is going into this movie will help anyone understand it a bit better and even then it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. He’s known for utilizing poetic symbolism in almost all of his movies. In this instance you have beautiful shots of landscapes, coastlines and nature juxtaposed with the violence and war people wage. That’s the message he’s going for - the irony of all the beauty in the world we live in but the evil and violence that can co-exist. If viewed with this in mind, you may find a greater appreciation.

It's interesting that people who love this movie, love it for basically the same reasons for which you hate it :)))

This movie is INCREDIBLE. Tense when it needs to be, over the top when it needs to be (personal experience war is VERY over the top). It perfectly captures the insanity of WW2 Pacific campaign. War at it's core is insanity. 99% boring, 1% absolute TERROR.
