Unpacking The Myths Of King Arthur | After Dark

Merlin. Lancelot. Guinevere. Excalibur. The world of King Arthur is littered with instantly recognisable names. But where did the medieval legends about Camelot and Avalon come from? What did they mean to the medieval peoples that told them? And what do they mean for us now?
In this episode of After Dark, Dr. Antony Delany and Dr. Maddy Pelling are joined by medieval historian Dr. Eleanor Janega to take a deep dive into 'Arthuriana' - the MCU of the Middle Ages.

The constitutional peasants are my favourite bit Dennis: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as sort of supreme executive officer for the week. Arthur: Yes. Dennis: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting... Arthur: Yes, I see. Dennis:...by a simple majority. In the case of purely internal affairs... Arthur: Be quiet. Dennis:...require two thirds majority. In the case of old ladys... The thing is - this bit is actually based on a peasant commune in Germany who operated this system for decades. Except "old ladies" was external affairs.

Maybe that’s due to the problematic author? Not only was the author’s husband a convicted pedophile, but her daughter has repeatedly and publicly identified her mother as not merely an enabler, but an active participant in the abuse, and which she and her brother were victims. Kinda changes how you view MZB’s books once you read the reporting on her husband’s conviction and her daughter’s testimony.

My favorite contemporary (re)telling of the Arthur/Merlin legend is Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy; The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills & The Last Enchantment. It reads like historical fiction & borrows heavily from all the early historical writers & later Norman French romance sagas. (She cites all her sources in the appendix) She also gives the female characters more agency & motivation altho it is technically Merlin's memoirs. 2nd favorite is probably Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley since it's entirely from all the female characters pov & brings in a much more pagan pre Christian culture in conflict/ contrasted with the burgeoning new faith of Christianity. Definitely more of a high fantasy than Mary Stewart's but all great reads :)

An interesting video, with a particular angle, which I found absorbing, Eleanor is always great. But, I felt that some very important areas of the myth were not really explained. For example in some traditions Merlin was actually ‘The Merlin’ which was a title bestowed upon certain individuals in positions of power. There are many details such as this, which are perhaps worth researching, as these ideas shine a light upon the more Celtic roots of the story. A xx

A read a book many, many moons ago called Prince Umbra without going into the plot of it one of the things posited in the book is that the sword from the stone was much more literal. Arthur was the first in Briton to figure out iron working. While that obviously doesn't fit with the time period between the Romans leaving and the Anglo-Saxons coming when the Arthurian legend came about it does make me wonder if that aspect of the story got picked up from some much older myth.

Eleanor: Guinevere’s mother is being tormented in hell for being a vain hussy in life and is concerned about her daughter that’s following her example. Dude at the side: What a great life! Arghhhh 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Honestly, I hate that dismissive tone. But I guess that’s the new order of things. Anything that builds up or inspires virtue should be teared down in favor of hedonistic pleasure and a purposeless life.

I'm sorry. Clearly I missed the point of this. I hoped it would provide the historical backdrop to Arthursa's legend. Instead, it was an analysis of the meaning of the romanticised myth - who cares, it's a myth. Owain Ddantgwyn must be turning in his grave. If you are determined to keep the word "History" in your title, I suggest you do the whole thing again but with Graham Phillips this time. Well done for overusing the word "shagged" though. That added a lot.

I don't believe for a second that the Britons don't know their own heroes. Just poppycock that he belongs to other nations. I'm not talking about the obvious fantasy additions but battlefields and place names. The most serious investigation I've seen is by Alan Wilson. He claims Arthur has become a blend of 2 historical heroes. Otherwise, you are left explaining a really old Arthur who can fight Romans and Saxons in one lifespan. Obviously not possible. Wilson's books are hefty lumps of genealogies and history. I'm not saying he's correct but there's this saying it's all myth, still interesting esoterically. Then there's Wilson showing battle sites by name on old maps and taking you there. It's as if few people have taken our ancestor's stories seriously and investigated in depth. Then there's the suppression of the Welsh language and literature in the past and the assumption oral history is invalid or even non-existent, when often the locals and land can tell you. things.

Yes, he's always British (Welsh) but as a literary/fictional tradition he "belongs" to whomever tells stories about him. As they note French stories about Arthur are very old indeed and lend a lot to the mythology.

@@skepticalbadger There is no patent on his name and we are all at liberty to fantasize but I wouldn't tell a Zulu or Apache or anyone their heroes of legend weren't real and I definitely wouldn't try they don't " belong" to them or even they belong to anyone.

I can smell the vaguely smuggled-in post modern tactics in here. probably not even intentional. but it's always important when talking about mythology that might involve wypipo that we insist on it not really having any origin, not being consistent, and having ties to those naughty nationalists who are morally inferior by default because... we say so

The single word that sums this up . Is camp. The two ladies almost compete, although Dr E. gleefully sweeps the board with shagging frequently alluded to. The younger one seems to want to bring tiresome political correctness into the myths, but even she goes with the myths as exciting foundational moral tales. The guy doesn't get much of a look in, which is further reduced by having a microphone in his face the size of a sideboard, as they do. All good fun !!
