To the people saying this is "anti-Jewish": it isn't. If anything, it's anti-fundamentalist. Not all Ashkenazi Jews are Hasids and not all Hasids are Satmars. I don't even think it's anti-Satmar. In fact, the pains that they went through to recreate certain aspects of the culture actually show a deal of respect for that culture. Could it have been more nuanced and less biased? Sure. In the end, it's just one production team's interpretation of one individual's story.

The problem I find is that this is mostly the only sort of Jewish story we see. “Breaking free” of Orthodoxy (and the Hasidics are but only one group) and something that is Holocaust related. It’s tiring. Whilst I liked the show I don’t feel like it showed the beauty of Judaism and the people. It only showed an Israeli woman who mentions Kugel once and is derogatory to Esty.

As a girl that has grown up in that same community and still is a part, I have found this series so heartbreaking to watch. My heart went out for “Esty” what she went through, it is absolutely terrible and no one should have to go through that. But this is her story and not at all everyone’s which it comes across to be. In every community there are these stories and it is so sad and unfortunate! But if you go and ask people living in that community they can say a completely different story! There are so many people in this community that has amazing happy marriages and loving families and schools that answer your questions and accept you just the way you are that isn’t pressuring etc. If you go in with negative eyes you will see these people because there are people that are like that in every community but if you come in with an open mind you can see an entire different picture

Rusy, I agree with you. Esty's parents were not compassionate of her needs, there was a desperation in their voice to "keep her in line" and it doesn't work. They did not know that compassionate discussion of what the girl wants would have helped. But because Esty's parents did notgive her want she needs, that does portray Judaism in any way. One set of parents cannot possibly portray Jewish values. I am a married Ultra Orthodox married woman, A licensed MHC and my Judaism is PRECIOUS to me. Torah, if one studies or finds a mentor who has studied well, has beautiful instructions on how to live life to give us the most PLEASURE possible in this life. If anyone has not known pleasure and happiness they are not experiencing true Judaism. My advice: don't run away, but do look for your own Rabbi that will understand your pain and your needs. Torah demands that my husband treatment me well, with kindness with respect, that he take care of all my needs and put my needs before his own. Torah expects that he learn how to make me happy. For all of you who identify with Esty, know: Don't blame Judaism for your pain. Your family may have needed help.

I have been catching up on this series and now into the third season. As a Believer in Yeshua/Yehoshua and have lived on and off in Jerusalem since '78 its personally interesting for me to see into the Orthodox community a little more. However, as all my American Jewish friends are secular and do Not have patience for anything Orthodox I can appreciate both sides now a bit more. Yet, I have to admit that the Orthodox relationships amongst themselves is brutally 'rough' and the men awkward towards their women while seemingly obsessed with continually being in a state of marriage . While last in Israel twenty+ years ago I was amazed at the 'open hostility' of the secular Israeli's toward their Orthodox brethren!! Yet, there is an obvious spillover-need of each group being STUCK in a world goING more insane by the day as the two extremes battle and HaSHEM looks down from heaven and knows who are His people while were all still trying to figure it out!

only if you will judge it through a film of one person's life. I am an Orthodox Jewish woman, I am licensed in my field of practice, I am happy and content and love my Judaism. Who would judge a religion that is over 3,000 years old, has never faded by the unhappy story of one person? Also, no one is following the protagonist. Often an unhappy person will fail to find happiness in her newer life for too long. after all "wherever I go, that's where I will be" the troubled "I" does not disappear when you run from your environment. In some cases the environment is not healthy, and that happens in every community. in many other cases the individual who is running is the unhealthy one.

How is this movie not considered a hate crime against religious jews, if they did anything similar to black or Asian or Mexican people it would be a hate crime and be taken off I’m not saying I agree with these Jews doing all these things I’m just saying how come this isn’t considered a hate crime or discrimination or derogatory against specific group of people

This mini series is actually based on Deborah Feldman autobiography: "Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots", which tells the story of her escape from an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn. It is not propaganda, or a hate crime. It was someone's experience within this particular community. Just like any other religion, there's many different communities, and many different experiences. Also being black or Asian is a race, being Mexican is a nationality, not a religion, or a community. there can be hate crimes against either; but if anything, a better point of comparison would be Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, etc.

No probably, that’s the point we are talking about, the problem is here :) women should be able to do what they want, is she happy as a house-woman? Let she be. Is she happy as an independent woman? Let she be. Why forcing her? That’s the problem we have in some societies.

The real question is not, “Are these people Jews?”, but rather, “Are these people Americans?” And the answer is obviously NOT. Their everyday language isn’t English, but Yiddish, a vernacular based on High German fused with many elements taken from Hebrew and to some extent Aramaic. Yiddish originated in 9th century Central/Eastern Europe, and these Ashkenazi brought it over to America from there. Being an American entails MORE than simply having been physically born here. It involves embracing the American culture and way of life, not importing a foreign culture and language into a new country. Again, this isn’t about religion-people are free to practice (or not) any form of worship they choose. “In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” - Theodore Roosevelt (1907)
