"Unopened" GSA Carson City Morgan Dollar

Recently I won an "unopened" GSA Carson City Morgan dollar at auction from a well known auction house. On this video I unbox that coin and see if it's a re-packaged poor condition coin or the real deal. From the title- you can tell things might not have gone so well.
In this video I face reveal quite a bit so I ended up covering up those parts of the video with the Silver Struck logo.
Enjoy watching and please leave a comment!

    I cant imagine a GSA box not being opened for decades. That is an original box, I remember tearing into them when i bought 3 for about $45 each back in the 1970's

    It really shouldn't be THAT rare? Well, I guess it depends on your definition of "unopened". Like, unopened from when it was bought in the 1970s? Sure, not that unopened. But lots of people will have parents who die who bought them way back in the day, and don't care about it and just resell it to a shop--that's what I did. There were millions of these things, so they should keep popping up as people's parents and grandparents die.

    GSA Morgan dollars just seem to attract us no matter how many years old a video is :-) I didn't even notice this one was 5 years old until after I watched ....thats okay, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember a year, maybe two years ago the "sealed" GSA` were all over eBay, dang i was so tempted to buy. I just couldn't pull the trigger, I think they were $800-$900.. something like that. I talked with some folks later on that said that they weren't in the original boxes but made to look like it. And everyone they knew that bought one got one of the 3 years we all know, 82,83,84. It was a scam of course. We all want to get that fabulous deal..i guarantee you if I had had extra spare funds at the time I'd probably ended up buying one and being teed off right now. Oh well 😅 Enjoyed your video, I'll check out your channel and what more. Russ Edited to say, i meant to say 2 years old but hit the 5

    Thank you for checking out this past video! I agree, the GSA Morgans are very popular with collectors, as it's great part of the CC Morgan coin history. The allure to the unopened boxes is finding that high Mint State coin- MS66+ without having to pay the premium for a coin of that elk. The downside is overpaying for a MS62 when you do not get a coin that would grade out MS66. Lesson learned 🤣

    Yes sir- that's a good way to buy Morgan's! I will say- I once bought a raw beautiful blast white 1885-CC from my LCS. A year or two after I bought it- I had them send it out for grading and it came back "cleaned". The LCS was embarrassed and returned 100% of my money. So- that said...consider buying graded Morgans if you are interested in collecting for numismatic value. Thanks for watching Silver Wolves!

    HI Doug, That is a good point. I had figured that GSA box came out of the original mailing packaging that it was shipped in. I would not beat yourself up about the purchase you've got yourself an uncirculated Carson City. You know the market is very good for these coins and they have been showing a lot of gains. If you hold onto it for a 2 year rotation I'm sure you can profit. Or just hold onto it for longer. You DID NOT GET RIPPED OFF! Ms63 is $460.00. I bought these same GSA'S years ago for $220.00 at the time they were worth only $180-$200 now look at the prices. I do like unopened proof sets as well.

    I just bought one of these supposed “unopened unknown year gsa cc Morgan’s from Silver City Auction today. As soon as I won it I instantly regretted my decision and feared it’s a scam of sorts. I don’t mind the gamble so long as the odds aren’t stacked against me. Meaning, so long as someone else hasn’t already peaked in the box and knows it’s a cheap common. I’m wondering if I should confront the auction house as per authenticity of never being opened before paying for the coin.

  • @SilverStruck

    @SilverStruck

    2 жыл бұрын

    The "unopened" GSA boxes I purchased had been opened. The whole point of buying them is to have a fair gamble that you have a high grade coin inside. After I posted the video- I reached out to the auction house I purchased them from and let them know what happend. The end result- they apologized, refunded 100% of my money and paid the shipping to return the coin (This was Heritage Auctions). They told me an employee in shipping probably opened the box to make sure the coin was inside- sounded reasonable. If you would like to reach out to the auction house and voice your concerns, it might save you from an experience like mine. Once you get the box containing the coin, you will know if it's fake- the fakes ones are bright white boxes with glue that is still very stubborn to work with with. The authentic unopened boxes are normally yellowed from age and easier to open because the glue is from the 1970's. If you think of it, please let me know how you make out- SS

    Yes- if you crack a GSA holder, it will mean that you can't prove your coin came from the GSA hoard. Back in the day, the grading companies would crack GSA coins out of the holders. When they graded the coin, they would designate the GSA hoard on the label. So, that's an option...have the coin -re-holdered by a grading service. If you do not care about the GSA pedigree at all- then you can crack the coin without fear of a loss in value.

I'm hoping for the best, but know that neither one of them will be grading as high as your 64. There is something about the old Carson Cities, though.. Thanks for making us aware of yet another auction rip-off. It seems Ebay is not the only with unscrupulous sellers..

    Bummer about the baggyness. However any GSA CC are always easy to liquidate. The price paid is a little steep. That is one of the reasons I never buy "unopened" or "unsearched" rolls etc. They all seem to be scams in my humble opinion. Anyhow, thanks for sharing bro!

    Totally agree!....but yet I still try-lol. Most of the un-searched or un opened Morgan dollar stuff is a scam for sure. It's hard to get ahead trying to buy raw and hoping for a good coin. I've done it a couple times and did ok but for the most part it's better to buy high grade CC Morgan dollars slabbed. That coin I unboxed must have been from the bottom of the bag. Buying on speculation lets call it, lol! As you know, your way better off purchasing a slabbed and graded Morgan instead of taking a risk on an unopened box. Well, if it's in a sealed GSA holder, it couldn't have been cleaned. Back in 1972-1974 the coins should have been simply taking out of the mint bags and placed into GSA holders. The only way I can see you having a cleaned one is if one coin was cracked out of the holder at some point and replaced with another coin. If you find the coin has been cleaned somehow, I would ask for a refund for sure.

    HI Justin- people need to be very careful when purchasing "unopened" GSA boxes. After that video- the auction house I purchased the coins from gave me a full refund. Same problem with buying original rolls of Morgans- these are largely just scams. Of course the fantasy with opening an unopened box is that you will find a coin that's a high grade, so a lot of collectors buy them thinking that will happen. Back in the 1970's the GSA shipped out "good" quality coins but also un-circulated "culls" or poor quality. You can't tell from the box which is which.

    You had to block yourself off on the back due to the reflectivity being good enough to do a face reveal though? I bet that gets a 63, but I hardly know anything. Certainly is disappointing though - I got a PLish MS65 that I can't believe my LCS didn't try for a CAC slap (it's obv. been less human-handled than my NGC 65+ 1881S, standing as my highest graded Morgan attm), for that exact price. It was an 1883 CC granted, but that good of shape I'm honestly surprised he went that low for me, kind of like the MS63 pitted I got for $50 with a decent ungraded $60 PL to boot for this check's buy, but I think he's feeling bad for my half year of never haggling? Down the line of these boxes, this same LCS owner just received four of them ungraded and decided to sell them all for $350 flat, due to that being the going rate for general uncirculated Carsons (i guess the average MS 60 or MS 61 price?); they are all obviously >=MS 62 being very conservative, but it's a real brain teaser deciding between two with spectacular looks all over but unreflective surfaces, vs. two great, surprisingly not terribly scuffed flat fields, but with a girl that's obviously had a harder life than the other two while in one of those bags they got stowed away in by whoever was fearful the public would swipe them all with those

    One more unrelated comment: I've occasionally seen these weird, legitimate NGS slabbed CC's show up on Ebay and even on the reputable auction sites linked from PCGS - CC's that are "restrikes" for 1886-1888. They were apparently "privately issued" in 2014, appear to be the best-looking Morgan restrikes I've seen apart from Etsy-type silver-coated Cu-Ni garage sale fakes, were minted as DPLs and, strangest of all, command a near $400 price. I cannot track down what's up with these either here on YT or with general Google-fu. Can you comment on them in a newer video?

  • @SilverStruck

    @SilverStruck

    I cannot stand "restrikes" of any sort. Restrikes make no sense to me- not the original and not a commemorative, so an authorized fake? I like the 2021 Morgan/Peace release because the coins are not re-strikes but commemoratives with different metal content....an updated version with the correct date. I'll look into a video like that for the future.

  • @pdstor

    @pdstor

    Жыл бұрын

    @@SilverStruck The issue I had is that the 2021's were a bit lackluster and uniform compared to the old ones, but I can't deny it - I do own them LOL. IMO it'll be nicer seeing the new 2023's, what with an opportunity to FINALLY own Carson proofs that don't cost five figures and Morgan proofs, not to mention REVERSE PROOFS, for the first time ever ... and tbh I think the uniformity of the 2021's was due to the very obvious supply shortage of appropriate planchets that still has their price double MSRP in the first place. My lone critique of the moderns moving forward with the 2023 plans would be to return to the sterling of yesteryear, so I can at least put the darn things in my paws without worrying that a fingerprint will forever ruin them or that scratches will develop if I so much as fart too close to one. They pretty much HAVE to be slabbed and forever enjoyed, like proof Eagles, on a slab, which continues to feed the imagined necessity of the two big-box graders. My old Morgan unslabbed PL/DPLs can take a quick distilled water wash and careful pat dry to get rid of my pawprints when they slip off the edges, and though they already have enough scuffs from the decades for those to really matter, also have that 10% copper to give the silver the protection that it needs (IMHO). Yes, it was weird seeing the great NGC verify "private tribute" coins, though since I can't even search who it was, I won't speak to whether they meant them for commemoratives officially or not. Even if they did - and even considering the "1878-1921" printed on all three of them for the coin year, they still hold themselves out as DPLs with a CC stamp on the back and with the official single year they're supposed to stand in for on the NGC case. I mean, it says 2014 or 2015 issue on the NGC label depending on which of the three coins it is, but still. Those years they "stand for" in 86-88 were gap years for CC, period, so there isn't any need to make what should be sold for just a bit over spot into a price similar to what actual Carsons command, as if they carry the vintage quality and era mystique that actual CC's do. It's like how even the most reputable companies out there sell the CC stamped 2021's for more than the others. CC has been closed since ... 1896 or so? So however much your heart goes into making a tribute to them - and trust me, as I said, these may not be "Dan Carr" quality but they are closer to any tributes I've ever seen that aren't copied right off an old coin or under the table rejected die or whatever those counterfeit-but-not guys use. But someone wants 'em I guess, and NGC's reputation shouldn't be taken lightly; it's ICG usually risking their already ailing reputation verifying the "private mint" in-betweeners, so I guess whoever the mint is and whatever purpose was behind it, it must have at least had someone high up in the coin world spend some political capital to get it done. As far as I can tell, NGC holders are the only place where these even show up, and they at least don't grade them (it's simply that legitimizing service they do where they give the category condition they're in and that's all). I will close on a note that GreatCollections call these "reproductions," even though the NGC label does not. Whatever the prestige, it still smells like a way to command the entry CC-level price that they command. If you discover what these are and who made them and why, I will take my hat off to you, good sir!

    Yes they do. I sent my entire collection to CAC to be double verified- no fakes.

    Yes- bottom of the bag coins for sure. I stick to buying already slabbed and graded coins these days.

    If they can fake coins, you should know they more easily fake the third party grading holders. Too many fakes in the hobby. I’ve lost all interest. You don’t know who to trust anymore. Damn , I used to get so much joy from coin collecting.

    There are a lot of fakes but don't let that discourage you. Anything can be faked but the real deal is known by collectors

    Why did you keep putting your logo up whenever you turned the coin to the reverse side, or why didn't you want us seeing the reverse?

    That is a great question! I kept "face revealing", lol! Normally I would re-shoot the video but face reveal problem aside, I liked how the video turned out. Sorry if that annoyed you. Those GSA holders are just sooo reflective.

    That GSA is reflective, so that graphic was covering face reveals. Sorry you found it frustrating
