Unlocking the Old Testament Part 36 - Song of Songs

David Pawson explores the reasons for the Song of Songs being in our Bibles. It has no mention of God or anything of a particularly spiritual nature, yet rabbis treat it as very holy. David says, for Hebrews there is one God who made the physical and the spiritual and physical is good - whereas in the West we have been influenced by Greek thinking which separates the two. “Here in the Bible, God is affirming love between a man and woman.” David says the Bible is a story of how God went looking for a bride for his Son; it is a love letter to us. It is a love story from beginning to end. Song of Songs was written by Solomon and David Pawson fits the pieces of the romance between Solomon and his love interest together for us. He says, at the heart of our religion is a very personal relationship; being a Christian is being in love with the Lord. God always speaks of his relationship with his people in terms of family relationships. Jesus Christ says he is the Bridegroom. Our relationship with the Lord is not erotic, but it is emotional.

    One of the best presentations on the Song of Songs. We're often too quick to make an application instead of trying to understand the plain reading of the text.

    This was mind-blowing for me!!!!!!! I love your theory about the Shulamite being the one that he was meant to marry. After this video, I listened to it on my audio Bible and just wept. I heard God say shortly after "you are his Shulamite" (in reference to my husband). I was so moved. Thank you Mr Pawson!

    Hi apologies I dont know exactly what David says in this video - would appreciate a timing point to listen to what exactly he says Egypt is a 'transcontinental country' spanning the northeast corner of Africa and the Sinai Peninsula in the southwest corner of Asia. As we all know It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip of Palestine and Israel to the northeast. So its transcontinental part is in North Africa - part is in the continent of Asia

    There is a major flaw in this view. U can’t casually shepherd when u decide to vacation. Sheep will only follow their shepherd-the one who continually leads them. Rather I believe Ecc is a book of repentance that paints Solomon as the carnal king of this story. And I believe his purpose in writing was to show the flaw in his actions and what marriage should really be about (between her and the shepherd). This idea that God approved of him marrying another wife after already marrying many would violate what God said a king should do. Therefore his view contradicts God’s word and cannot be right. The Bible is it’s on best commentary.

    PLEASE,WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY HE HAD A BAD EXAMPLE FROM HIS DAD? DOES THE MOST HIGH BY ANY DINT OF A SUGGESTION FROWN AT POLYGAMY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?

  • @DavidPawsonMinistry

    @DavidPawsonMinistry

    Жыл бұрын

    H - its a good question firstly the Bible does not specifically say why God allowed polygamy, but it also does not say God agreed with it or encouraged it - it is clear from the New Testament and especially what Jesus said Matthew 19 "at the very beginning the Creator made them male and female and said for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh''..................It says wife not wives Whilst Genesis 2:24 is describing what marriage is, rather than how many people are involved, the consistent use of the singular, I believe, is important In Deuteronomy 17:14-20, God says that the kings were not supposed ''to take many wives or his heart may be led astray'' Later in the New Testament, 1 Timothy 3:2, 12 and Titus 1:6 give “the husband of one wife” So I suggest to you whilst God did not specifically speak out against polygamy - creation order was for there to be one man and one wife and whilst we deviate from that. When we get to the New Testament times and the teaching of Jesus, I suggest to you that we see a return to Gods intended order - the husband of one wife

    I wished he framed his hypothesis about the book as a hypothesis rather than fact. I also dislike how he suggests that there is some "one" soulmate that Solomon should have waited for. The soulmate myth is Greek mythology, not from the Bible.

  • @DavidPawsonMinistry

    @DavidPawsonMinistry

    Hi The Bible is very clear about one man and one woman in a covenant relationship - marriage Anything else is adultery or fornication David is offering his own opinion ( not quieting a myth) suggesting that unless Solomons first wife was the right one / soulmate …..Solomon should have waited until he found a woman who would be his one and only wife ….. for life …..and not rushed into one marriage / relationship after another trying to find the right one to satisfy him ……. David would be the first to refute any myths I do agree with you that I also wished he had elaborated on his hypothesis about this book

    I believe that if David were still with us he would hold his hands upon and concur with you - you are correct Hebrew language does have adjectives I had taken in what David is saying before you point tit out and m not tying to justify what David says but believe the answer is a few sentences later when David says "you have to use nouns" eg Song of Songs , King of Kings, Im no Hebrew Scholar but my understanding is unlike English adjectives Hebrew adjectives take the gender of the noun and hence become like nouns ie Song of Songs ........but that does not excuse what David actually says and Hebrew Language does have adjectives Thank you for pointing this out
