"Unless you're Native American, you came from someplace else."

President Obama reminds the American people that all citizens of the U.S. are descended from immigrants.
Watch the full speech here:
• President Obama Speaks...
"Immigration's always been an issue that inflames passions. That's not surprising. There are a few things that are more important to us as a society than who gets to come here and call our country home. Who gets the privilege of becoming a citizen of the United States of America. That's a big deal. When we talk about that in the abstract, it is easy sometimes for the discussion to take on a feeling of us versus them. And when that happens, a lot of folks forget that most of us used to be them. We forget that. And it's really important for us to remember history. Unless you're one of the first Americans, a Native American, you came from some place else, somebody brought you. The Irish who left behind a land of famine; the Germans who fled persecution; the Scandinavians who arrived eager to pioneer out west; the Polish, the Russians, the Italians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the West Indians -- the huddled masses who came through Ellis Island on one coast and Angel Island on the other. All those folks before they were us, they were them. And when each new wave of immigrants arrived, they faced resistance from those who were already here. They faced hardship. They faced racism. They faced ridicule. But over time, they went about their daily lives. They earned a living as they raised a family, as they built a community, as their kids went to school here. They did their part to build the nation. They were the Einsteins and the Carnegies, but they were also the millions of women and men whose names history may not remember, but whose actions helped make us who we are, who built this country hand by hand, brick by brick. They all came here knowing that what makes somebody an American is not just blood or birth, but allegiance to our founding principles and the faith in the idea that anyone from anywhere can write the next great chapter of our story, and that's still true today."

It’s interesting cause when the Europeans came it wasn’t by some legitimate means that they ended up in the US, and they most certainly did not ask the permission of the natives b4 killing all of the Native Americans of the North

Oh yeah the mass rioters going around cities burning buildings and killing people without masks, but I’m sure you don’t care about that 🤷‍♂️ , you blame it all on the president. Tearing down statues of some heroes like Lincoln, killing children, you don’t care about all that. Dems are getting rid of our rights, trying to imprison the St Louis couple for defending their home which was trespassed. Even though I don’t believe it is right yet for schools to open again, many families don’t have technology to do online learning, which is why it isn’t a very bad choice. ***** Warring among humans is an incredibly common thing, the very fact you are baffled about the subject proves to me, your are ignorant. Because we fought among ourselves (much like humanity does) apparently in your mind, makes it okay to steal our identity and heritage, at the expense of an entire race numbered 20+ million. Or at least you are implying we deserved it. If we looked at the track record of the "other" continent, its filled with plenty of hate, warmongering and outright killing, but it brought a lot of good too. Renaissance Era for example. Much like the whites (just names for references, dont get offended), The Native Americans supported Matriarchy, which was never seen at the time of white colonialism. (They treated their women like they were under sharia law).

However if you go deeper there are artifacts and signs of human activity well before the land bridge theory. For instance my tribe has a creation story where we came out of the ground at a sacred site known as Nanih Waiya (Mother Mound in Choctaw) in Mississippi. Take it as you will but I believe and many others too that we were actually from this land to begin with. I forget the term but in science it’s when two different species evolve exactly the same even though they have had no contact with each other. That could be the case why we are so similar 🤷‍♂️ We could have come from Asia, or we could’ve come from some other form of travel maybe by boat. Seems preposterous but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone tried and succeeded

tihzho that statement is wrong. The majority of Mexicans arriving are illegals, Mexicans are not suffering from a war, or persecution, in fact over 50% of Mexicans are either overweight or obese (so don't know why Obama is comparing the Irish famine where over 1.5 million Irish died from starvation which mean almost 20% of the entire Irish population died while Mexicans are stuffing their face with toccos and has become one the fattest countries in the world. The USA has its own laws and immigration policies. There are steps in which people can take to become a us citizen. Go through the paperwork and necessary procedures to become a US citizen. The USA has already got 40 million Mexican in the USA (that 1/3 of the entire Mexican population) Trump followers probably do believe American citizen come first, just like every nation does. For Mexico, Mexicans citizen come first For Japan, Japanese citizen come first If you truly care about the Mexicans they why don't you house them and all their kids (who they use to get a free pass to the US)

Let's not get angry or too offended here. But Obama is correct, and i'm so glad he tackled this subject. My family is of Native American decent, and i've witnessed many of the hardships we have gone through because of the loss of our culture. I was eating dinner with a friend who is from Vietnam. She said "You look like those guys who wear the feathers!" I said.. "You mean Native American?" And she didn't quite understand. Then i asked what she thinks of when she hears "American". She went on to describe a white guy, blonde hair & blue eyes. I told her that's basically a European! They are hear in America now.. but the originals were dark hair and golden tan skin! Broke it down to here and she was completely shocked!! haha. Gotta love history!!

***** Well, it's goes a little deeper than that. Native Americans are of Eurasian decent and come from many areas throughout Europe and Asia. Some have big nose bridges & long Caucasoid faces while some have more of an Asian look. We arrived here just before European & East asian colonization.

+Dem Ise I don't disagree with you. I refuse to celebrate Columbus Day for this reason. He was a racist that took a wrong turn and ended up on the wrong continent, and proceeded to enslave the wrong type of Indian ie. not an East Indian. Not something to celebrate. Important to learn and teach people the history of America, but teach it without leaving the important, often grisly, parts.
