Looks like you had a great time and thanks for sharing your traveling tips...I spent a month in NZ in March and wish I'd taken more shots with different angles and time lapse since not all came out well. Sometimes I also forgot to shoot because I was enjoying the moment (which is what you're meant to be doing while on vacation). Do you have any tips for interviewing others like at a conference?

  • @jimcostafilms

There's way more footage I end up not liking and not using then there's footage I do like and use. Tell me more about the interview. Haw many interviewers/interviewees? Will it be a sit down or a man-on-the street type? How many mics do you have & what kind (handheld/Lav/etc.)? How many inputs/channels does your camera have? Will you be recording right to the camera or to another device? With more info, I can answer.

It will be for a conference I'm attending in October. Nothing planned but thought it would be good to do short interviews of participants while roaming the conference. Would probably be like a man on the street using my Canon M50 with mounted mic or gimbal with iPhone plus external mic (although storage and battery power would be a worry).

@@Drostvideo This presents a unique set of challenges. I would say your best bet is to record the audio in camera as this will make editing later easier. You won't have to sync it. However, this makes shooting it a bit more tricky. If you used one hand held mic, you will want to move it back and forth between question and answer to get the best sound form both speakers. However, you must be quick about it and paying attention so you don't forget to move the mic and miss something. Using an Omni-directional mic will help to pick up both speakers, but will also pick up room noise as well. Using a directional cardioid mic will help eliminate room noise, but will also mean you really need to be on top of the interview. Another consideration would be to use 2 mics, one on you (probably a LAV) and one for the speaker (handheld). To do this, you'll need some other way of recording 2 channels of audio as your camera only has one 3.5mm input for sound. I own a Zoom H6 for such situations and it works great as it allows for up to 4 mics to be plugged in. Set up is an issue as you have more stuff to lug around, but it works great and you'll need to sync audio when editing. However, you'll get 2 separate audio channels making editing easier as you can separate both speakers audio tracks. I'l guessing you'll use wireless mics so you don't have a ton of cords to deal with on top of other stuff. Now, another way to get multiple audio channels right into your camera would be to use a Beachtek DXA. It adds 2 XLR inputs to any camera with a 3.5mm output to plug into your camera. I've use one of these for decades and it, too works great. Your question is timely as I'm in the middle of doing a whole series of videos on audio topics that will be released over the next couple months. While I don't address this specific concern or the gear mentioned, you might want to take a look at these two presently unpublished videos for some insights: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fKlr06SBY6jFaZs.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYxm0a2gp7XehdY.html. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for presenting the options...seems like recording the audio in camera with my Universal Cardoid mic (VXR10) mounted on top would be the easiest since it's what I currently own.

@@Drostvideo As long as it's close enough to the speakers, it should work.
