Reviewing a magnetic phenomenon. Steel magnets don't reverse their poles, or change when in a vertical position; but the fuel rods found in a working GEET reactor do.

it's a misconception that opposing poles somehow attract. that's a secondary effect. the primary effect of magnetism is there's a torque acting on a magnet dipole in magnetic field that tries to align its magnetic moment along the field. the secondary effect (that decays much faster with distance than the torque) is that a magnetic dipole is pushed in the direction of the field gradient. it's crucially important that there needs to be a gradient. for example, earth's magnetic field is almost uniform on the surface, so the gradient is almost zero and magnets are not pushed either north or south, they only feel the torque. i'm bringing this up, because so-called "paradoxes" only arise because of crude shorthand interpetations of field physics like "opposing poles attract". if you were to describe the field configuration with the full set of maxwells equations, there'd be no paradox.

This and Ed Leedskalnin's Permanent Magnet Holder (PMH) are two real and observable phenomenon which are readily demonstrated by a home experimenter. After witnessing them, many people have gone on to also believe more astounding claims which have not been readily demonstrable, if at all. Here the magnetic characteristics of the rod (perhaps its magnetic permeability?) have been changed without actually magnetizing the metal. The video is clear and easy to follow. An important thing which appears to have been left out is to show the behaviour of the stock rod in the vertical orientation too (the rod that was not used in the GEET). Might be worth adding this in.

You're right, I didn't get the footage of the vertical position of the cut off piece in there. I thought I did.

From the more original documentation I have seen it makes a difference (in performance) when the Geet is placed horizontally instead of vertically and aligned with the pointed tip towards north, somehow after seeing your video it makes more sense to me, now anyhow. keep it up. And as @atarnheim stated I would also like to see the unmodified rod's reaction on the compass, maybe another video for us?

Looks like the inside is one pole and the outside is another pole.

I sort of wonder if it is Eddie currents which are sort of following the right hand rule, which would apply to the perpendicular phenomena.

You may be right. Like they're spinning all around, but when the rod is placed in the vertical position, they all orient in the same direction. -because of the earth's magnetic field?
