“Gear is meant to be destroyed in the line of duty,” laughs Ruban Nielson. “I realize I prefer to see my equipment all dinged up rather than sitting perfect in my basement-that’s a dorky thing to do.”
That doesn’t mean Nielson doesn’t care about his sound. He noted in a 2015 interview with PG that he spends countless hours in his basement tinkering on breadboard circuits and swapping out components, trying to maximize a pedal for his needs. “I like the idea that instead of buying your sound, you’re building your sound,” he said.
Over the course of 14 years, five albums, and thousands of touring miles, Nielsen has been custom-fabricating his guitar voice. But as we all know, the quest is never-ending, like trying to catch the horizon. After all, isn’t it the journey, not the destination, that matters?
“I used to be too much of a savage to care about a clean boost or headroom,” says Nielson. “‘Just give me a distortion pedal already!’ But now I’m exploring the intricacies, subtleties, and nuances of guitar.”
Ahead of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s headlining performance at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, Ruban Nielson welcomed PG’s Chris Kies onstage to explore his current sonic lab. Nielson covers his two space-age guitars (and what inspired them), explains how he convinced Benson to put a Monarch inside a vintage solid-state Yamaha, and details the pedals-including a few of his own designs-that extract a kaleidoscope of moods.

Pickups are potted with a thinned down very old can of lacquer, something that was done before wax. The idea is the lacquer will dry out and shrink and harden but still control feedback without killing the tone and make them more responsive. The video I sent Ruban about the tube compressor was of Adrian Legg and his use of the compressor for touring, it's actually a Premier Guitar video and I've linked it below. Thanks Chris and PG for the love! Been watching your rig run downs for a long time! Cheers

Fuck yes. Ruban is probably my favorite guitarist currently alive. Dude literally never misses with the melodies. The variety of his work is actually insane, so glad you guys collabed for this
Wow I never thought i'd see the day Ruban Nielson has a rig rundown!! My favourite guitarist, and band, seen them live live 3 times and incredible every time.
4:02 shout-outs to Captain Kies for the Mint Chicks mention, he knows his stuff
This dude is fucking chill and his rig is fucking unique! I'm gonna check out his band after finishing this.
No joke, I was searching for this yesterday without knowing if he had one or not. Weird! Love you Ruban, this is going to be good.
I love Ruban’s harmonic sense.
His playing always catches my ear, you can tell instantly!
Lucky owner of a B-1 chiming in, @baranikguitars is indeed a genius and such a cool dude to work with. This was my first custom build and I was for sure out of my element, but he helped steer me straight and I eventually ended up with a work of art I'll forever be inspired by. Seeing him then link up with Ruban was amazing, but also makes so much sense.
I've been waiting for this forever, by far my favorite band and guitarist. Ruban seems so much more in his element talking about gear than in normal interviews. Thank you!!
Love seeing Ruban on here, I feel like he is one of the premier modern guitar players, and UMO has put out some of my favorite songs of the past 10+ years. Saw them live in Philly a few years ago, and they crushed, definitely worth seeing.
Thank you for this one. Ruban and UMO deserve to be more known that they already are.
I tell people Ruben is my favorite guitarist/songwriter/producer of the last 50 years, and the only human who tops him, to me, is Jimi Hendrix.

Very excited to see you guys cover Ruban's rig! He's a killer guitar player, unconventional but super clever and creative. I've been following his material since the first record so yea super cool to see you guys cover him. I love Chris's quote "Shitty is pretty!" hahaha. So true! Love it!
I’m using Deco in Stereo in my rig too. Most underrated pedal on the market.
A really interesting rig rundown! I'd love to see a King Gizzard episode too ;)

Rubans a huge guitar hero of mine. Thanks for doing this. Would’ve loved to see Jakes bass rig tho
Ruban is a guitar hero of mine so this is SO exciting for me! Yngwie does use light strings, but he uses SUPER high action, so that's what I think Ruban might be alluding to. Rad to see this!

LOL, nice Raising Arizona reference in the amp's name!
This was a great episode! You guys should hit up nashvilles own Patrick Sweany! He has some amazing tones and killer gear.
I agree with Ruban's philosophy. Gear is meant to be used for music. Use the hell out of it, push it over the limit. It's all about the music, not the gear.
Been trying for hours to find the strap that he uses on the Baranik. It looks similar to the fender super deluxe strap, but the ends where the strap buttons go are widened out and reinforced in a way that looks both sturdier and cooler. Anybody have any idea what it is?
"Uncle" Ruban (after Uncle Remus from Frank Zappa) is one of the most sincere musicians I've ever listened to and talked to about guitar tech over the phone. The reason I have my Fender Mustang with the all seeing eye on the pickguard and the Lace Sensor Pickups. And then seeing him pre-COVID run through the crowd and balcony from behind us, and literally slap hordes of hands reaching out for his strings while he shredded through pure volume feedback with the lights reflecting like lasers at the Jag, like he was a psych-jazz Cyclops, proved to me that he and UMO are indeed the Best Band in the World TM. Thanks so much for being you, Ruban. And for this! Keep it locked

This is iconic. Seriously.
D'Addario strings suck, I put some Pyramid flat wounds on my guitar and they lasted for 9 months with weekly rehearsals, gigs and very aggressive playing. I've had to now replace 2 but the others haven't even shown the slightest bit of rust. I don't even wipe them down after gigs.
Rubans a genius, mad boffin and visionary all rolled into one,
I have the same problem with nerves in my neck and my spine is also really bad. I need a lighter guitar. I have a PRS Custom 24. I have not weighed it but it does start to hurt. My neck hurts when I look down at my hands. I can't give up tho.

YOOO he’s got the Gus’s shirt
Those tones are not for everyone. Nice dude
fascinating. the FOH engineer might be pleased to hear that there's now a way you can balance the dry and wet signal in a live setting so that the audience doesn't just get a windswept wash of quiet, flangey 300hz reverby mess.
Nice Bay City Roller pants.
This man made my acid trips great
I wish we could see Jake’s bass gear, too
