University of Michigan: Lady GaGa Halftime Show

Музыка

Finally I was able to download this! This is the University of Michigan Marching Band's Lady GaGa halftime show, as seen at the Notre Dame away football game. This video was downloaded from NBC Sports' HQ player, which uses Smooth Streaming, hence why it was hard to download... but I finally got it.
Original URL is here:

Enjoy this in 720p HD.

I performed in this show! (I'm the 3rd tuba from the left in most of the formations). We learned this entire show (memorized music, formations... everything) in just 5 days, 1.5 hours each day.

You have to love the University of Michigan. Everything there is world class, including the School of Music with its world renowned opera program, having graduated the likes of opera legend, Jessye Norman & its musical theatre program, which is tops in the nation. Even the dance department is outstanding. Madonna was a dance student at UM. So you can probably guess why student organizations such as the UMMB & the Men's Glee Club are nationally & internationally acclaimed.

After seeing the whole show, I found that tears already flood...Just because it's the first song for our Marching Band...The very beginning of our Marching Band...

:O This took my breath away. When marching, it seems like it's just somewhat random placement sometimes, but the picture it gives is almost always amazing. Sound quality is great, color guard is great (saw one mess up though) and this... I have a sudden urge to try a lot harder in Band.

You're watching the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy as the top college marching band in the nation. Any given school can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so whatever college band wins it first is obviously the most highly regarded band in the nation. That's the Unversity of Michigan. Go Blue!

We march off in the Block M during pregame not during halftime. :) During halftime we march off the field keeping whatever form we're in perfect until we get off the field.

I'd like to see you try to play this, then. Actually, a big part of it is COMPOSING the song for marching band instruments - it's not as if Lady GaGa is going to just hand out sheet music. University of Michigan's band director is good at turning songs into band music.

Yeah. This was an away game at Notre Dame, and college students are stupid and like booing the other team. U of M students were outnumbered due to it being on Notre Dame's turf, hence why you can hear booing. It's incredibly dumb, I wish people had more respect in the fact that whether they go to your school or not, they're still incredibly talented. But there you have it.

That has to be one of the best musical spectacles I've ever seen! I don't understand why there were some booing though.

Also, you have to memorize the steps (with a certain style that is only done by the MMB, although you can't tell that from videos) and you have to memorize the music and play with good tone and rhythm. It's a lot harder than it looks, that's why we're so good because we make hard look easy.

You obviously have never participated in marching band, or any band I'm sure. Many people underestimate band and say "Oh, ANYONE could do that...it's easy". 300-400 people (who, depending on the school, have probably been in a very hot, thick uniform for several hours during and before the game) marching to a memorized spot, stepping in time, while also playing memorized music in-tune and perfectly on beat with the other member. It's not about how many notes, it's how well you play them

Michigan won this game by 4 points with a go-ahead touchdown in the last minute of the game.... that's not a blow out. Seriously, enough revisionist history.

College marching is nothing compared to drum corp being out on the field in the hot sun for 11 to 12 hours a day

You should have some respect. Marching while playing is kind of difficult. I know becasue I have to do it. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to march the drills and stay in step. You have to make sure that everybody is in the right spot on the field and that your intervals are correct. If you have never marched before, you have no right to be criticizing them.

I saw the Notre Dame band perform to Lady Gaga, and it was absolutely an inferior performance to this one. ND didn't have the crisp, rich sound quality that the Michigan band has and ND's formations were relatively simple. The formations Michigan does are much more complex. It has to be incredibly difficult to create that "the end" formation. This is an awesome performance, make no mistake.
