I’ve just looked at the the drone tour. I graduated from here with a first in 1984, a PhD in 1988 and did my PGCE in 1989. After recently retiring after a 30 year teaching career it was great to see it . Great memories of living in the vale for my first year, and using the old library. What advances there have been in terms of facilities and infrastructure but it is very much the recognisable place I warily walked into for my interview in 1980, from a much smaller town, thinking that I had never seen anything so big. I struggled a bit to get used to living away from home, but it gets better, and looking back it was the making of me. I did work hard and perhaps didn’t use the social and sporting facilities as much as I should, looking back, but the place opened my mind to a bigger world and it’s possibilities. There is much in the press about social mobility, and this was mine, from a council estate and a family where no one had done O levels (GCSEs), and university was another world, but a great one. I have done many things since, but I feel it really started here. Take the plunge as I did and see what I mean.

@@tashmorganx7093 it really does depend if you want a campus or a city uni and such. Manchester and Birmingham will both offer world class facilities and teaching being top 100 uni of the world. Birmingham ranks higher than Manchester but vice versus in world rankings. My cousin goes to Manchester and she loves it but I’m firming Birmingham :)

One of the very few UK universities which have a proper campus (Nottingham is another example. Big, self-contained, clear boundary, wooded area... Birmingham has pettier buildings than Nottingham) in my opinion. Others are embedded within the cities (Oxbridge, London), disjointed sites, or too small and crammed with buildings that you don't get a sense of a university campus. Go to Oxford and you would sometimes meet a tourist asking where is the university.

some old buildings including the tower need some cleaning as because of the rain they drain dirt from its red bricks and other materials on the surface. Some people don't like my view and they say it's better to keep it this way because it's history, but cleaning and polishing some old walls in major buildings like the tower have nothing to do with the university history.

The University has demolished the old library, which was one of nice-looking building, but kept intact the ugliest building in Britain, the Union Building in the entrance of the University. This is sad.

I have watched this video several times and shared lots of people. I studied and lived at Aston University Campus- which was ideal because its only a short stroll from the city centre. Also enjoyed living at Keele University campus due to its village setting whilst doing my PGCE. I have attended some seminars and talks held at Birmingham University. Now finally visited the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, plus the Lapworth Museum. Oh,plus the new small Museum of Egyptology that was opened in 2022( had the honour of being one of the first vistors). That Museum will mainly be used by the students, with some access to the public. The University campus is well laid out and accessible by buses and the University train station. Plus canal nearby. As the oldest University in Birmingham- it has some amazing ingredients buildings. So, worth a visit. I visited with my niece and her children. Her 8-year-old was impressed and excited. I hope he will go on to study there like his dad.
