Make a section of your notebook/binder/bullet journal, or even just a google doc, with all your professor/advisors/TA office hours and emails. Add to it any tutoring hours, lab hours, or study group times. That way you're not flipping through a million syllabi to find out where/when you can see someone.

My essential item is a power bank. You'd think it would be easy to find power outlets to charge your phone on a big college campus, but you'd be wrong. A power bank is super useful when you're spending your entire day on campus, especially if you have an older phone with a bad battery like mine.

I went through 3 years to get my degree, and the number one tip that I can give is to just breathe. Place your hands on your desk, close your eyes, and breathe. Focus on just your breath and mentally tell yourself "breathe in....breathe out..." 2 or 3 minutes helps so much. It's simple yet effective, I promise. 💜 And if any of you are starting college/university soon, don't worry. You'll do great. I'm rooting for you. 💜

I graduated in 2016, age 57. My favorite was: good pens, lined paper, and a student planner. I tracked club meetings, due dates, and reading assignments - a monthly spread and a weekly spread. If I had a big research paper due, I would list research and writing times, then schedule myself the number of pages to write each week. It is essential to have meetings with Professors, to discuss assignments, and to ask further questions. Never be afraid to ask questions. Allow yourself 2-4 hours per day to read, it is more important than any other activity, and the library has plenty of study areas. Don't waste time on partying all night, it makes poor grades.

  • @arissakhan1700

I agree with not partying all night, but make sure that you’re actually having fun! It’s an Incredible experience, and grades are very important, however they shouldn’t be the only thing in your mind 24/7. Also, congratulations Mary!

I just graduated, and I miss college all ready. I miss the moments and the classes. I don't miss the homework though. My biggest advice is just a reiteration of what you said: having a planner is SO helpful, and document your time at college whether that be through photos and videos of journaling or both. I did both, and I'm super glad I did. I just wish I had started doing it my first year instead of starting my second year.

For the printer, I have an HP Envy 5052 and not only was it super affordable (I got it at my local Walmart for less than USD $100) but it has a lot of handy features for students. It comes with an app (not sure if they offer an Android app though since I’m an Apple user) so you can print from your phone, iPad, desktop and other mobile devices. My favorite part of this printer series though is that they have a subscription service for ink. Basically, you make an account with HP and connect the printer and then HP keeps track of when you run out of ink. When they sense that you’re running out of ink, they send you a new cartridge of ink, and they only send one of the color you’re running out of. They also only charge you the $6 to your bank account when they’re getting ready to send you the ink, so it’s not like a regular subscription service where they charge you every month no matter what. They stay environmentally friendly too because they send an envelope with the ink cartridge that you put the empty ones in and you send them back to HP and they recycle them for you! It was a very good investment on my part I think, cause over time, ink can get suuuuper expensive.

Great video! Instrumental playlists were crucial for my studying time, too! I would say another thing that was useful for me was a library card. I went to school for history, and I used my university library SO MUCH for resources. However, there were times when they didn’t have something available. The city library would usually have it, so I would check it out from there. My senior thesis required at least twenty sources, so the city library was a big help with that. 😊

This was such a great video! I especially liked the bit about having clothing ready for events and interviews, it’s something that is definitely not mentioned very often. I would say my best piece of advice would be balance is sacrifice. I guess this depends on the kind of person you are, but I easily get overwhelmed when I feel like I have to do everything at once, so I tend to think of balance in that way. One day I focus more on school, one day more on self care and one day more on socializing. That has helped me a lot through out the last school year.

I'm a mature student just going into my second year and I LOVE my student discount 😄😄 My one piece of advice would be don't buy all the books on your reading list (I swear half of them you only use for one lesson and then never open again!) find out the essentials buy them (2nd hand if you can) the rest get into your library early and book them out. If you have a scanner/printer scan the pages you'll need or take pics on your phone, it saves carrying around the books.

I'm still in University, only now I'm a teacher there, and these tips are so so so valuable, specially the planner one! Even for people working there too, academic life can get hectic and if you don't sort your life with a planner, for example, you end up working from 11 pm to 4 am (as I have done, multiple times, specially after I graduated). Also, the backing up your files advice is the best one. Honestly. Do a monthly backup of everything. Put that in your calendar/planner

Ahh! In my first year at UofT I had POL101 in ConHall and I immediately had to RUN to Bader right after for my history lecture. There were many instances where I just ran across the street between Hart House and Queens Park just...hoping I wouldn't die.

I honestly dont care much for pretty notes, so all I do for taking notes is seperate an A4 paper into two columns and write out a condensed summary of the notes I took in class, just in pencil *gasp* then I numerize those pages and I have a condensed note pile to study off of

I was “lucky” enough to have almost all my classes in the faculty of music building so not much commuting time but when we DID have to go to a class even across the street at Bader we always complained lolol EDIT: my tip as someone who’s gone to grad school and now works with primarily undergraduate students: learn to write a concise but professional email. There are probably many articles on this but if you can learn to be considerate of the person on the other end of that email, it will go a long way in your favour. This means both not writing paragraphs and paragraphs of text for a simple request (this used to be me) AND not writing in the same way you would text a friend. I don’t want to advocate for academic contexts becoming stuffy and inaccessible, but professors and university staff have so much on their plate and it means a lot when students take the time to communicate effectively.

THREE HOLE PUNCHER!! As a music major this saved me with punching in any solos I did over the past years at my university. If u r the kind of student who like things in binders I would highly suggest this.

I am suggesting that you look more into fast fashion and sustainable- ethical fashion. I believe you will be amazed on the impact you can have on the world by changing your shopping habits. INVEST TIME IN SETTLING IN AT UNI - Dont expect to have the hang of everything from day 1. Invest time (all of first semester for instance) in finding the right study pace, tecnique etc for you. Get inspired by professors advices, friends, SoMe influencers, but reflect on it and only keep it, if it works for you. That saves you a lot of time during the rest of your uni-life and makes it more relaxing and satisfying!! (For the nerdy ones: It is my impression that - in Denmark at least - teachers have for a decade, maybe more, been freightened to commit to the wrong "school" of study tecnique resulting in no training in study tecnique or "how to wright a big assignment" at all. So those who haven't got a personal network, parents, older siblings in uni, uncles, friends of the family etc. who can teach and train their study skills are poorly prepared for uni. My hope is that high schools or the ministery of education will soon realize that any training in this area is better than complete passivity caused by being afraid to commit to one/the wrong tecnique.)
