The song was compiled by Atahualpa Yupanqui, an Argentinean yes. But he compiled it from traditional songs of the Venezuelan Caribbean. There is another similar song named Drum Mobila, sung by the Cuban singer Bola de Nieve. That version is actually in a Spanish-based creole language, which reinforces the Caribbean origin.

My middle school and a high school I’m our district did a joint concert just last week, and they sang this. It was amazing!
