Universal Audio Volt 476 - Unbox and Workout

Музыка

This time around, I'm giving a workout to the UA Volt 476. I'm really curious about how the compressor, vintage mode, and 4x4 I/O all works. So let's take a look together!

    This is one of the best reviews for UA Volt 476. You are a very talented musician. I was searching for an audio interface that would serve not only my initial learning curve for the home recording project/hobby but also would serve in a more advanced setup in the future. UA recently released the new Volt 476P a few days ago, which could fix some of the shortcomings that you have pointed out in your review. It is however unclear whether or not UA has addressed endless login requirements for each and every software piece in the new 476P release, as you have bitterly complained about. I hope UA allows the user to tweak compression parameters via software settings as you suggested. Best regards.

    Great review! I always appreciate your opinion on these interfaces. I already had my eye on this one, after getting the chance of playing a bit with the UA Apollo at a friend's studio. I had my doubts about the build and overall quality, since it is a "budget" interface, in UA price terms... I am glad you reviewd it, now I know it will be the next interface I'll get (time to swap the old and underperforming UR22). Also, great job on the song demo. If you wouldn't have said anything, I could totally think it is an already worked-out song you had in the drawer.

I think it'll make a fine addition to any studio. And thanks for the compliment on the song. I was a little nervous going into it with nothing prepared, and even afterwards I wasn't sure if I liked it or hated it. I think it turned out ok 😁

    Thank you so much for your thorough insights! I really enjoyed all the practical information provided! I just wished you would've given a bit more info on the software bundle. I understand that UAD went native and has some free plugins at the moment (when you buy one of their interfaces). Do you need an actual iLok for the software, or just an account? When I moved from ProTools to Reaper I was so relieved to let go of this constant "surveillance" ;) and hoping my dongle doesn't break... Do you need the iLok for the Marshall etc. software, or for UAD's plug-ins? Or even both? I hope you can share some light into this! All the best from Vienna 💪!

All of the hammers and some of the other innards are gone. I still need to mute those darn strings though! They resonate along with the drums and drive me nuts :)

  • @YHRS

    @YHRS

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the late reply but if you're still deciding...for just recording direct electric guitar, the 276 would be plenty. I'm usually a fan of more inputs and outputs, but that's just for drums and outboard hardware. A 2 input interface still gives you all sorts of options for direct recording guitar/bass but also mono and stereo options for using microphones to record various things.

  • @LespaulNa

    Could be used the 4 in at the same time? For example 1 and 2 mics stereo pair 3 in guitar plugged and 4 bass guitar plugged. It's possible this routing? Thanks

  • @YHRS

    @YHRS

    Жыл бұрын

    You can use all 4 inputs at the same time, but keep in mind that inputs 3 and 4 are only line inputs. So you'd need a preamplifier if you wanted to plug an instrument or microphone into the line inputs. In this video, I used an FMR RNP to get 4 microphones plugged into the Volt 476 to record 4 channels of drums.

    Thanks for the demo. Does the 1176 compressor affect the line in on the back or just the inputs on the front of the interface?

  • @YHRS

    @YHRS

    Жыл бұрын

    The compressors only affect their respective inputs (inputs 1 and 2, but not 3 and 4) on the 476. I saw that UA released the 476P recently, and that model has all 4 inputs as fully featured mic/line/inst inputs with the compressor on each channel. So if you're looking for 4 channels of 1176 style compression, the 476P would be the model to look at. Hope that helps!

  • @YHRS

    The headphone output carries the same signal as the "monitor" output jacks. So the headphones will always hear the same signal that's being sent to the speakers. @@_EightySix You're on the right track, it'll be a feature of your DAW to send different tracks to different hardware outputs.
