Units of Dune - The Sardaukar LORE DOCUMENTARY

A Dune lore documentary on the history of the Sardaukar warriors!
Start playing Dune: Spice Wars today : gsght.com/c/iq9d6z
In this animated documentary we continue our exploration of the Frank Herbert's Dune Universe and the Dune lore surrounding its most famous units of history. We previously released a Dune lore primer called Welcome to Arrakis which will help introduce you to the setting: • Welcome to Arrakis - D...
In this episode we look specifically at the origins of the Sardaukar and how they rose to become the most feared soldiers of the known universe. We begin with the initial colonists who settled the planet of Salusa Secundus and how their descendants eventually were reduced to savage tribes warring for existence across a brutal landscape. Eventually the Sardau tribe would rise to claim dominion of the planet and forge a regional Empire. However it would not be until the chaos which followed the Butlerian Jihad that they would truly emerge as a great power. At the battle of Corrin they would ultimately grind the Landsraad to a standstill and crown the first Padishah Emperor.
We cover the equipment, training, and organization which made the Sardaukar of the imperial period so formidable. This includes their Sardaukar religion and Sardaukar chant so unique to the mindset of their forces which continued to be produced from the prison planet of Salusa Secundus. Then we cover their extensive service history which culminates in the Battle of Arrakis against House Atreides and the Fremen.
What units of history and Dune lore should we cover next?

    Well considering that in Dune Universe if a laser beam hits a shield's force field it causes a 2-10 megaton nuclear explosion it kinda changes a lot. Dune is an interesting universe where this specific quirk created a futuristic sci-fi envirnoment where only melee is feasible. Guns/cannons/plasma/pulse/Tesla weaponry are basically useless and laser weaponry is only useful from like the orbit. So you have space battles waged like ancient greeks, where only close quarter boarding actions are functional. Otherwise you either just let devastating rocket barrages blow you from the sky or turn on the shield and risk a total annihilation of both fleets.

  • @Emanon...

    @Emanon...

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Galejro Not really. Having a shield in a space battle over great distances poses a greater risk for the defender if the attacker uses lasweapons. Beam weapons would therefore still be viable, all things considered. You either get blown up if you have a shield or torn to pieces by weapons you could only see the moment they hit if you don't have a shield. It would probably explain why space battles were very short... Herbert didn't really spend a lot of time or effort describing space warfare in his works, which is a shame.

    Something you don't mention is that by the time of the events of Dune, the Sardaukar were not as they had once been. Herbert mentions that they had lost some of their warrior spirit, and that cynicism had sapped their adherence to their religion. They were still probably the best army in Imperial Space, but they were not the killing machines that founded the Empire.

    It also lets the people making tech manuals give all sorts of HUD systems on the Sardaukar helmets, giving them the Dune equivalent of the Future soldier program. They can claim that the Sardaukar helmet gives the wearer optimized displays with false light setups to prevent blinding/darkened rooms, constantly updated 3D map showing building layout, known enemy forces, known Sardaukar forces, etc. Add in some internal oxygen supplies so the Sardaukar troops don't have to worry about stale air inside their shields, body armor to prevent slow blades from easily killing them, etc.

    If you enjoy reading then I recommend picking up the book, however it is a lot of information that is never really explained in the beginning so it is not a light read. Honestly Lord of the Rings is a way easier book to read because everything is pretty well explained and described in detail on what is going on. In Dune, it just assumes that somehow you know everything about the setting. The best way to read Dune is to watch videos like this and essentially spoil the plot for yourself because it literally makes zero sense if you don’t haha.

But after the Fremen adopted the wierding way fighting style and intel from prescience, they were pretty much unstoppable. The Shein San Shao radiated out of Arrakis bearing their Kryst knife at hand enacting the will of their prophet. More than sixty billion lives taken, Multiple great religions silenced, and when the frementide cleared there was only one religion.

    There IS technically a House Sardaukar and there is some surface pretense that House Corrino and the Sardaukar are linked but still seperate entities to hide the fact that Salusa Secundus was the birthworld of the Sardaukar and that it is where they get their recruits from. Many just assume the Imperial levies are where Sardaukar come from, not the brutal prison planet. The Atreides do figure it out and that is why they are so eager to get the Fremen on their side as allies. So they can use their own pretty awesome troops combined with Fremen units and overwhelm the trap that was Arrakis.

    I think it’s made pretty evident that the Sardaukar get by partially on reputation by the time of the first book. They were founded as a conquering army, but afterwards became the product of a glorified prison planet. They’re still plenty tough though and make short work of the Atriedies, but the Fremen are depicted as a martial culture above all else. War for the Fremen is a way of life, to the point where they don’t even hold someone killing their spouse against them. It’s not one-sided with the Fremen either. The Fremen take what we today would call “very heavy” casualties during even their successful operations.
