Unique and Interesting Things at the Dunolly Museum

Today we're headed for the brilliant Dunolly museum where there are lots of interesting things we'd like to show you.
This museum is set in the heart of Victoria's famous Golden Triangle, and as you may have guessed, it houses a brilliant display on gold!
But that's not all it has to offer. There are many intriguing treasures hiding the museum collection, some of which I think will come as a great surprise!
From the first metal detector used on the goldfields, to a smoke dried human head from New Guinea, in this video, we're going to delve into the archives and discover some of the Dunolly Museum's most fascinating relics.

Thank you Michelle and John. Your museum is wonderful. John, in relation to the railway line level - I have a question. How could they tell which side was high or low?

Cordell - The end with the spirit level measures how much lower that rail is. If it is higher they turn the gauge 180 degrees and measure the other rail - John

Levels work, as a rule, by using gravity to pull something down and then use some mechanism to determine a result that indicates an angle or at the very least a direction of tilt. A simple spirit level can be made using a round glass jar on its side, tied securely so that it can't move, to a straight bar with a flat edge, and filled most of the way with water with only a sliver of a bubble of air remaining. Calibrated by placing it on a known level surface and marking where the bubble lays, and it will tell you if a surface is level or which side of the level is higher, but not much more. An even simpler design of level is a simple square piece of solid material with a peg located in the centre. Mark the degrees centred on the peg along the edge of the board, the larger the board is the more precise you can mark and the more accurate tour readings will be. Hang a plum bob from the peg and stand the device on the surface to be measured. A large enough device could give you precision down to the hundredth or even thousandth of a degree. You could then also reduce its overall size if you realise that you only need to measure from -1 to 46 degrees, thus cutting off the top of it, one side of it and then almost half of the remaining quarter leaving you with a triangle about 3/16th of its original size. If the plum bob goes outside it's range of measurement, simple measure the other side of the object or rotate the level in such a way as the plum bob remains inside the scale. In the case of the track level device, the level only needs to indicate where 0 degrees is, likely with a curved glass spirit level tube. If the bubble moves towards the level adjustment leg, then that side is higher and you should turn the device around so the bubble moves away from the adjustment leg. Then increase the adjustment leg height until 0 degrees is reached and you have your elevation difference in inches (or millimetres if you were to make a modern version). Given that this is also a gauge measuring device (the width of the track), the elevation difference over the known length of the contact points can be mathematically converted into degrees of angle which could prove quite useful. Train lines, and roads, are commonly sloped through curves, similar to a NASCAR race track only not to the same degree. This slope helps vehicles turn without as much steering input, but also allows for a sharper turn at a higher speed that is move comfortable for passengers and cargo. An almost 90 degree slope would allow even the fastest of vehicles to turn very sharply without throwing passengers to the sides of the vehicle and if designed just right and only used at the exact design speed would allow a person to walk about experiencing the same apparent "gravity" as if one were standing still on a flat surface. Of course, as such an angle if you were to go too slowly or even need to stop, you would end up laying on your side rather quickly which is why you don't see highways sloped as steep as NASCAR tracks. A truck simply wouldn't be able to slow down and stop safely at such an angle.
