The current generation of locomotives may be faster, more powerful, and more efficient, but these old monsters really got your attention. Mechanical works of art.

Actually, steam locomotives are *significantly* more powerful than anything else. Because of torque

The Big Boy is beautiful and that 's a fact!
Yeah, my grandfather worked for Santa Fe. He was a small guy, so he got the job of climbing into the boiler( right after it allegedly cooled) and, holding a 95 lb. air hammer above his head to drive the rivets. Imagine the noise it made. He was probably exposed to asbestos. He made very little money, but it fed my mother and uncle. His hearing was not very good after he retired. He lived until he was over 80 y/o.

As far as steam trains are concerned, I have found the Big Boys most fascinating. Here in Britain, it's usually The Flying Scotsman or the Mallard which get the glory. The Big Boy looks like it would have the Terminator as its driver.

In fairness to British locomotion I don't think they ever had a mountain to conquer like the Sierra Nevada or the Rockies. It was always the US that was gonna come up with the most monstrous steam engine, just because we were the country that needed the big fellasthe most.

I heard the news that in 2013, Big Boy 4014 was required by Union Pacific to be restored back to operating condition in time for the 150th Anniversary of the Golden Spike in May 10, 2019!

wow i am absolutly amazed how a giant of a steam locomotive can be so downright georgeous.
3:16 I remember hearing that as a kid and thinking just how disappointing that was and how i just wish it could one day happen. Fast forward to 2019 and I just saw 4014 two days ago!
It's fine to like other kinds of trains, but to me none have the same kind of life as a steam locomotive.
With the Big Boy pulling, gives new meaning to "ALL aboard".
News for Big Boy fans. One Big Boy (#4014) been returned to Union Pacific for restoration to operating condition. The project is expected to take 3 to 5 years. If the project is completed, this Big Boy will ride the rails once again to show its prowess to a new generation.

The Big Boy is my favorite steam locomotive!
Awesome!!! These steamers practically come alive.
The nostalgia I’m getting from this. It’s so good to hear the first few seconds again. Just the sound of a thundering beast making its way up the hill.
Good stuff. Wyoming was Big Boy country!
My favourite steam locomotive of all time, I’m getting this tattooed on my right arm for a half sleeve
Really fantastic, Thanks.
that beast sqeezing on the turntable was cool.
Great video! Thanks!!!
I hope we get a bluray, or even 4k scan of this footage someday.
3:16 "It's not likely that we'll ever see a 4000 pulling a train again." The Union Pacific laughed, "You are wrong..." Bigger irony was he said that as 4014 was in frame. XD

RichmondCityRailfan I See The Big Boy 4014 In Southern California In October 2019
It’s the most sensational railway spectacle you’ll ever see in your entire life. The BELLOWING Hancock Longbell 3 Chime. The huge prescence and it just allures you to follow it.
Bloody magnificent!!! Thank you for posting. Cheers, John.
As a young man I had a friend who was a retired steam locomotive engineer. His name was Ona Knotts, (cousin to Don Knotts), from Rowlesburg, WV. He made the conversion to diesels a few years before he retired, but had this to say on the subject: "A diesel engine is a flatcar with a motor, but a steam locomotive is an IRON HORSE." Ona also said: "You're busier on a steam engine than on a diesel, but being busy is fine just so you get to lean out the window and watch those drivers roll!"
what an awesome steamengine
All the same, long live the Big Boys and all the other steamers.
2:47 Hear that beast chuffing down the line!
they are massive and incredible
If I had a time machine to go back in the past only ONCE. I would use it to go back to this time to film the Big Boys, each on from #4000-#4025. This would be the greatest moment in my life... :]
"It's not likely that we'll ever see a 4000 pull a train again" 4014: Are you sure about that? Good to see a Big Boy in operation
Great compilation ! Superb !
Outstanding. My grandfather worked on them.
It's not likely we'll see a 4000 pull a train again." Everyone on may: 2019, *are you sure about that*
What an amazing loco. Thumbs up! :)
Im a Brit and only yesterday I saw Bittern, a member of the same class as Mallard, the worlds fastest steam locomotive. But if Britain built the fastest, the US built the biggest and most powerful and the Big Boy class were just superb. Great video - thanks for sharing. Woodscritter - you're right, but you have no soul - life is more than a matter of dollars and cents!
Wonderful -- such power !
So beautiful
thank you
Looking out of the dome car at 4014 pulling our RailGiants excursion up the Cajon was incredible.
It's awesome to see a Big Boy ride the rails again, not so awesome that 3985 is retired for good because of it. :(

Good news my friend, the restoration of 3985 has begun! The big Challenger will return to service!
The Union Pacific Big Boys literally shook the earth?!
The first time I saw this was Last of the Giants on VHS and since then has become my favorite railroad videos of all time. I've never gotten to the second half only that I would soo love to see both again.
Union Pacific knows how to make a locomotive
I love locomotives. That's why I can't wait for the new Train Simulator :) Love your videos. 5*
Great vid.
Fantastic.
pretty nice locomotive, nice vid.
Awesome Locomotive
Simply awesome.
How I miss those days...May it's legend live on.
Man I would love so much to see one/all of those restored and pulling friaght trains again. That would really be something amazing to see.
Love BIG BOY !
Didn't know that, thanks.
Glad that 4014 is being restored!
Awesome catch
We'll probably never see a 4000 haul a train again. . .2019 intensifies
I didn't know BIG BOY held that record...thanks for sharing that bit of info....very cool!!
I'd kill to see them restore the remaining few that are left to working order, they really do make everyone happy. And they are such good peaces of American History.
I remember watching this video back in 2010's and hoping that some day she will be back on tracks !
"It's not likely that we'll ever see a 4000 pulling a train again" *A Big Boy Gets Restored* *It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia*
True, bigger than a Big Boy could easily be found but as experimental locs. The Big Boy was simply one of the largest but with the success in addition.
Fantastic loco
Nice video
Haha, love the shot with the guy and the kid saying hello. When you see that kind of shot you expect a nice little train painted in colors with a quiet whistle. But that's one of the meaniest locomotive instead, passing by at high speed xD
That was the best era to have lived through some of my friends Dads drove those BigBoys i was to young but myBrother and i used to hop them.
awesome!
nice video
I saw one in a museum today, this thing is huge!!!
This Film Sample is fantastic, However i wish we could have something like this for the J1 Hudson Locomotives, We can only Dream. Thankyou for your video
I'll get to see one tomorrow.
I wish I could of lived in the 40s and 50s to see those babys roar through!
hells ya big, tough and power full thats a big boy
It's not likely that we'll ever see a 4000 pull a train again. That's what he thought. Of course this film was possibly the driving force for Mr. Ed Dickens and the steam crew to reverse that statement, as I myself was among those who chased UP Big Boy 4014 from Evanston, WY, to Morgan, Utah, on its way to Ogden on May 8, 2019. That was a sight to hold, and I myself never thought a Big Boy would ever return, but it did. Thanks to the UP Steam crew.
amazing
When I first heard of Big Boy I thought they were gonna be decent sized until a few years ago went to go see 4012 and it was a giant
The most handsome loco 🏆
In the Big Boy days priorities where much more different from todays. Power was the first target besides of the fuel consumption and efficiency. The challenge justifies any cost. Environment pollution was not even considered. Engineers comfort were definitely forgotten, the cabin was a mix of jail and sauna. Anyway, Big Boy is an engineering master piece !
excellent video
Absolutely bloody marvellous!! The loco to end all locos!! A good big 'un will always better a good little 'un. Great footage. Hope restoration becomes a reality.......more than 250 steam locos restored in UK, plus a brand new , built from scratch..Pacific flier. It can be done!
what an awesome piece of hardware
The acme, the very pinnacle of railway development! As the Americans are wont to say;"If it ain't got cubic inches,it ain't got it"!A most enjoyable clip.
Saw the one in Green bay once. A lot of moving parts. The men who ran these were something else!
Incredible locomotives.
NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL BIG AND BEAUTIFUL.
Grrrrreat Vid...
Grande film,thanks,from Germany.
Big Boy was given this title as he was the most RELIABLE with proportionally equal mass, strength, and speed. Alleghenies had wider boilers and more HP, but they had pressure problems: One exploded, killing crew. The Q2 was(unfortunately)a massive failure. The rear cylinders would cause strain on the firebox metal. Triplexes required more steam to actually move, as there were 6 cylinders, and not enough steam. Jawn Henry had the usual coal-clog in the turbines, and it was hard to reverse.
