Day one of the 2024 Westbound Steam Tour sees No. 4014 climbing up track 3 over Sherman Hill unassisted with about 1065 tons behind the main tender drawbar. Here she is, with Austin Barker at the throttle, departing a short inspection stop at Harriman on the 0.82% grade towards Dale Junction and Hermosa Tunnel. Enjoy and stay tuned =)

Amazing scene! I'm glad UP was able to install the PTC device without it looking too distracting, you honestly could mistake it for some kind of toolbox on the tender if you even see it at all. Hope the crew's staying refreshed with the summer heat now.

No matter how many videos like this I see, it never ceases to amaze how absolutely gargantuan the 4014 really is.

Nice video! I enjoyed hearing the engine accelerate without it being drowned out by the whistle.
It’s interesting how old the Union Pacific Trains really are. Awesome catch again! Looks really hot there as well

What does hot look like, looks to me that people have sweaters and jackets, how can you watch something like this and have a thought like that.
Thank you, Union Pacific, for bringing this gorgeous "young" lady back to life. ❤😂🎉

Soooo , its UP Big Girl Now?! Ug , I cant believe it ! Another warped , mixed up Transformation , and Sign of The Times. SMH , Is Nothing Sacred ?!
Great footage! Also, nice to see no graffiti on any of the freight cars, sure looked sharp!
If I want to hear a bell all day I'll lean on my doorbell. Most people are in love with the sound of the loco.
Man that video quality is awesome it's almost like it's in 4k really makes bigboy look really impressive
Great to see her on the move for once without a damned diesel locomotive in the mix. She's a work of art.
Aaahh! 4014 with no diesel! Not sure if he'll have one later in the journey thou. Also Ed letting Austin take over as engineer must've made Austin excited.

Well the only reason a diesel might be needed now, is to help with braking.

Big Boy had a diesel because of PTC requirements. Big Boy is now PTC compliant, no more diesel!

They try not to even use the brakes on 4014 herself. Braking is the reason for the freight cars on the end of the train. More cars means more braking power when you dump air. Cheaper to replace production pads on freight cars vs. the custom pads on 4014

Nice to see 4014 out again!
I know 4014 is the star, but can we talk about the rolling stock and how good it looks too
Absolutely beautiful! Go big boy! Fantastic American history. Hi from the UK. ❤😊👍
I know MANY people want to see her without a diesel, myself included. However, knowing steam and remembering how the diesel saved 4014 from running out of water by pushing it to safety. Diesels are required in the modern era for more than jist BS FRA regs.
Absolutely great footage!!! 😊 ...Big THANKS for sharing my dear friend of trains ... " 👍✌️ " CHEERS and kind regards from overseas 🇩🇪, Olli
Have seen 2 Big Boys on static display & hoped that 1 would be restored. 2018 got to see 4014 as she passed through Cedar Rapids, Iowa on her way back to Cheyenne. Awesome sight to witness!
I watched the 4014 leave Cheyenne this morning. It was looking good, and sounding good.
Nice camera work. We were in Laramie to see it arrive today. Quite a sight!
I love Big Boy! What a gorgeous machine! ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊
I’m looking forward to seeing Big Boy in Roseville, Ca. 💪❤️🇺🇸👍
Love the old caboose on the end there, such a cute little addition.

Wonderful - greets from Australia.

Excellent video! Thanks 👊🏻
That is a beautiful video!
4015 is crying on a lone piece of track somewhere 😢 4014 can now roam on her own like she once did. All of a sudden - everyone likes PTC… lol… almost 😂
I was in Laramie, Wyoming, waiting for him to come in and then I saw him departed. I think we saw each other.
Great shot! Thanks for posting!!
That's amazing!! Thanks for sharing!! 👍
Amazing they've managed to restore so much of the locomotive and old infrastructure, I presume.
Very clean shot!
The biggest and best steam train of the world.
4014 accelerated this train without problem! Now I wonder how much 4014 can haul on level ground...
I can only imagine the ground shaking raw power.a dream of mine to get to see it in person but it will never come east like the challenger did
Looks like Ed has an engineer in training.
Kinda funny how we still get diesel noises despite the lack of one (generator car)
"I think I can I think I can I think I can I....."

One fine looking train
Awesome, nice stack talk, looks like there was a student engineer too.

The diesel for only there for dynamic breaking ( PTC) and to power the coaches. If you watch the video of 4014 pushing the stalled freight train the diesel is at idle(neutral) the entire time.
@FanRailer
19 күн бұрын
The diesel does NOT supply power to the coaches. Freight diesels do not come with HEP capabilities. That’s what the generator cars in the consist are for.
@RmsTitanicagaming1912
19 күн бұрын
@@FanRailer I’ve always heard that up 4015 was only for dynamic and giving power to the coaches
@longrider42
19 күн бұрын
The Diesel was not a helper. It provided all the electronic Feldercarb, that is now required. Plus helped with braking. Now all the electronics's and and other stuff, is tucked into the side of the tender. The Diesel was also there to help with Braking. Never to assist or push.
@jamesmckenzie3532
19 күн бұрын
@@FanRailerI can confirm that diesels on non-freight trains are there for power. AMTRAK routinely uses UP power when the engines on the SunSet Limited fail. One of the AMTRAK engines has to be running for HEP.
UP #4014 highballs through Wyoming. He's headed west. He's pulling a small freight train too
Now that's cool. Are they gonna let it run the mainline without a diesel? Also I'm gonna get to see it twice pretty soon.
@longrider42
19 күн бұрын
Yes, unless the 4014 needs help with braking. All the electronics the diesels was providing, are now tucked into the tender.
Go Big Boy ❤ It. 😊
What kind of camera equipment are you using here? I really would like to know, because it’s one of the best types of present-day video footage I’ve ever ever seen.
There goes all the brake shoes!
this is true steam power.
Great video. But is this run a test run or a ferry move with freight cars? I knew Big Boy was supposed to be running this week, but I thought it was going to be a western excursion tour.
@longrider42
19 күн бұрын
No, the freight cars are there to help with braking. Since there is no Diesel engine to do Dynamic Braking.
❤❤❤
Glad it beginning it west tour
Nice 😊
LOVE TO SEE THE BIG BOY PULL FULLY LOADED GRAIN CARS ABOUT 250 CARS WITH NO DIESEL IN MIDDLE OR IN BACK. OH YEAH. ❤❤❤❤😅😅😅😅😊😊😊
You can hear her much better without the diesel.
Nossa é muito legal ver o Big Boy sem o Diesel!
I saw a long string of passenger cars on their way to Cheyenne Friday or Saturday, I was assuming they were for this trip but I don’t see them. Any idea what they were for or where they were going?
Is this for the rose land excursion or more tests?
Where will it pick up the passenger car consist?
Wait the Big Boy has 4 high pressure cylinders... yet it's only doing 4 exhaust beats per wheel rotation instead of 8? Why is that? There's no way the two sets of valve gears are synched up that perfectly, right?

All articulated locos will get in and out of step due to slight differences in wheel diameter , curves, slipping, etc. Here's a classic example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHWp2ryphNXaZaQ.html

4015 has always been in regular service when Big Boy isn't running. She is still needed for breaking when they have the who passenger train from what has been said so I don't think we have seen the last of her with 4014

They were running 4014 for a section of the tour on its own but today they put 4015 back on so nothing happened to it
Not built to spin free. Diesel put dynamic drag on 4014 to simulate pulling a load.
Accelerating uphill away from a standstill. Well, TBH, that set of carriages is no where near the load it was designed to haul,...
@ 2:50 The only time you will see a compete train set of cars without graffiti painted all over them... 😁
NO Graffiti like it should be!
A Big Boy on Sheman Hill, with tonnage, and no helpers, as God intended....
The freight cars not having graffiti all over almost makes this feel fake, like a model train set.
