Jesus, you can literally see how happy she is to be back on the rails!
That's not just any Diesel, that's a Centennial DDA40X
There is nothing as satisfying as listening and watching the first few movements of a newly rebuilt steam locomotive… May this incarnation be long and fruitful.
844 is a beast and the wide shot at 5:17 just puts into perspective how massive 6936 is as well. Its nice to see her back again and looking mighty fine too!
Skip, you are the friggin' man!!!! Absolutely wonderful shots of this beaut. It's great to see her breathing again!
1:34 What??? That sounds like 3985's whistle, she's not dead!! :D 1:44 That's the sound of 844's famous SP counterpart, 4449! It's always fun hearing a little bit of different in a loco.

WOW! How great to see her back in all her glory and hear her whistle again. Thanks Skip for capturing the event and sharing. Great job as usual. Ted
I wish my grandfather had lived to see this steam renaissance!
Wonderful to see this magnificent engine back in service!
she sounds REALLY good with that big boy whistle! Can't remember the last time I heard her sound this healthy!
Very cool. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
And that beautiful whistle sure does work.
So happy to see her back and running! Excellent video!
AWESOME !! Thanks for all your videos , Skip
Congratulations to Ed and the Cheyenne crew on a successful refit. It is great to see her steamed up again.
she is alive!!!

+Thomas Boese (WI. Rail).... I agree, and if "we" keep going in the direction that this "world" and country is headed... it won't be much longer before we arrive, back there.. either. I think, personally... that there is a Lot more "insight" and "behind closed door" knowledge... within UP's corporate corridors, with regards to restoring the 844, 4014 and 3985... than meets the "public eye", and "public relations". I think UP is making a wise investment in large steam power... it may well prove "handy" in the not too distant future.
Nice footage! Can't wait for the Big Boy!

this locomotive is a true epic win
All of the boiler work must have helped 844 looks to be burning cleaner and still making plenty of steam.

Cleaner than some diesels I've seen. It's amazing just how how powerful these locomotives were for their day. 844 probably has more horsepower than the diesel behind it.

@@TheMetalButcher thats a 6600hp locomotive behind it, more powerful than big boy, the centerional or something like that
I want to see this beast run up the Moffat someday.
The Beast Returns!
Great video!! Will you chase her to Denver next weekend??
Sure nice to see her under steam again!
I've watched a couple of the return to the rails of the 844 and have a few questions. Is the Steam Whistle a bit off as it sounds like it is a bit airy then I remember it... and It did sound like the Diesel was applying power when it went by, was that because this is still in a test phase or a brake in period? And I must say thankyou to Ed and the crew for sticking with it and bringing back the 844. I for one missed it! Congrats UP!
Wow, I`m glad UP is into hertiage. Great.
I wonder if the crews of these trains ever go on KZread and watch videos like this of themselves. "Hi, me!"
Looks as though Union Pacific Excursions fleet no. 844 is ready to return to duty - no trouble pulling an auxiliary water tanker, an Electro-Motive SD45 (probably in full dynamic brake for purposes of the post-overhaul test run), and two engineering cars. Sure hope the UP's getting the roadbed tools ready to rebuild the Mococo line, Martinez - Tracy, CA, USA, from the foundations - it was originally built to handle Baldwin light 2-8-2's at best and would break up beneath the pounding drivers of one of the UP's 4-8+8-4 American Single Expansion Articulateds Class BSA-1; some portions are already stop-staked as washouts waiting to happen.

+B. C. Schmerker UP 6936: a Centennial; aka an EMD DD40X UP 6900 - UP 6946. First built in the mid to late 1960’s and was the biggest, most powerful locomotive in the EMD catalog when the UP celebrated the first 100 years of transcontinental railroading in 1969. Two 16-cylinder 645 engines, providing 6,000 HP to EIGHT traction motors in two, four axle trucks make it hard to confuse with anything else. Come May 10, 2019; it would be interesting to see the 4014 and the 6936 come together, nose to nose, to recreate the scene of May 10, 1869… Building America, indeed!
Paint job looks great. Wonder why there's still that knock from the rods on the right side. Boiler is now good for 10 years.

Great to see 844 back in service a steam loco wouldn't be right if it didn't have a knock or two my heart goes out for the old steam engines I live in Indy and remember them. Solid mean sounding monsters and would love to be lucky enough to see more thank you. Guys
they have the diesel for 2 reasons; 1, in case something happens to disable the 844; 2, to supply electricity to the passenger cars.
Looks like at the end the test didn't fare so well. Fire and it seems as if the Diesel is helping push a bit?
Hey Skip, nice Video. Schön das die 844 wieder rollt. Wie weit ist 4014, wo und wann fährt 4014 wieder ? ( Germany )
When will 844 get her mars light back? She looks creepy without it.
Might I ask why they are running a diesel behind the steam engine? Is it incapable of running on its own?
THE LEGAND HAS RETURNED!
Wow.
MARTY! IT RUNS ON STEAM!!
i hate to ruin the party, but has anyone noticed that 6936's engines were notched up when taking off and as she got up to speed, why is the 844 being pushed?? i thought "break in"runs we're done from light load to heavy load and repeated???
Excellent. How darn sexy is it that you see a 4 8 4 Northern in the same consist as a DD40X? Makes you think that the UP still has a lot of confidence in the DD40 X which is still a very good locomotive. The primes in the DD 40 were some of the best power plants ever produced by EMD. Were in not for the commies at the EPA, EMD would still be in business in the US. Glad to see though the Progress Locomotive is building a very much in demand SD 70 series for which there is a considerable waiting list. More power, less fuel, more automation and better serviceability then any locomotive GE has ever built. And that comes from the engineering staff at BNSF.
Waiting for the Big Boy 4014 ! Any time soon?

Happy again , Mr W ? (!)
whats the diesel unit for wouldn't it be able to pull a load without a diesel engine if its the carriages being heavy and modern make some old fashioned ones for it and have it pull stuff without the help of a diesel
@timengland3649

I've been told that UP throws in a diesel electric for safety reasons and to assist dynamic breaking. It's only there as a back-up for the old girl.
Damn they took off the Emergency Light

Anyone know what whistle she is wearing? The sound of it just seems off for some reason. Don't know if it's a different whistle or not.

can UP 844 pull the Excursion trains without diesel helpers?

Good to see it back. Hopefully the testing was deemed successful and next time they can leave the diesel at home?

The diesel is for simulating the load of a full consist during this test run. Other times, it's used for emergency back up power, extra braking when pulling those heavy weight cars (gotta keep the passengers safe).
@struck2soon

+shayengineer10 ....so how come they don't use a diesel behind J611? Are you telling me those passengers weren't "safe"?

Hey this is great but can someone tell me why is there a Diesel engine behind the 844
@Biker_Gremling
8 жыл бұрын
For more reliable braking and as a backup in case the 844 breaks down. Also to give some weight to the engine to actually pull.
@HTTVChannel
8 жыл бұрын
It was actually just being pulled as dead weight, I believe. It helped simulate the weight of a full train.
@loganwinters2032
8 жыл бұрын
They just do that now. Testing her on a short freight woulda been a lot better, but they NEVER, pull freight with the steam engines anymore. I'd be surprised if they ever do it again.
@neonhomer
8 жыл бұрын
When I asked UP that question, they said the diesel is to assist in braking, and adding dynamic load to simulate a longer consist.
its time it earned some money back on fright working pulling containers

@bcbloc02
8 жыл бұрын
Actually I think I heard Ed say it rusted and literally was falling off so they removed it. I don't think it is in any condition to be put back on, also it wasn't original so they probably prefer it off so it is more representative of the locos life as 844 not the time it spent as 8444.
@SkipW
8 жыл бұрын
Your right it was because it was rusting and going to fall off, but I heard that they will make a better mount for it and reinstall it.
now there is greener fuels made from wast bio-fuel pelts that locos will burn and get high presser steam from so the Steam locomotive still will have a future there very powerful locomotives and there underestimated with the power output , new all welded boilers and new type of firebox and superheaters are now been used in Tornado and Flying Scotsman there giving out more power than ever before we Need New Steam locomotives , So how about Union pacific !
