    #844 is my favorite out of the 3 steam engines! Growing up in 1970s i had a HO scale that used to smoke like the real one and the engine was a beautiful piece of machinery! Big Boy would be my second!

    3985 was also converted to oil after running on coal after restoration; enough fires from cinders compelled it, and oil was the only available fuel found wherever it traveled.

    Yes, you are correct; I had the fortune to see#3985 operating from Salt Lake City to Provo, Utah, prior to the change to oil; oh, she lit up the fields at the Point of the Mountain.

    Yes, Union Pacific's big steam is impressive. I actually enjoyed the #3985's era of steam excursions. Seeing her do 75 mph was amazing!

    You got the year wrong on #3985. It was first restored in March 1981, not 1991.

    CAR 2066 is a power car providing electric power to passenger cars in the consist that do not have their own independent generators. They are also living quarters for electricians who monitor the train systems. Thanks for a great question.

    4:09 if that train has 844 and 4014 on the point, why bother putting the GEVO there? Either of the two steamers could easily handle that train on its own, so why have they got a diesel to help them?

  • @chasingtrains7827

    @chasingtrains7827

    The diesel is not utilized for power generally. Thier function is for braking as well. The power is used at times to reduce fuel and water consumption of the steam locomotive.

    @@chasingtrains7827well, kinda. The Big Boy was never designed to do passenger service. Gotta get that power from somewhere. Also, the cars were definitely reworked so they could use electricity to power the air conditioning as well as heating. There were plenty of diesels back in the day that had steam generators for what we now call HVAC. It was used for a long time. Near St. Louis, there are (were) sidings that had all the Amtrack boxcars. One thing I noted about them is the steam pipe was definitely present on them, as well as the power couplings.
