Union Pacific 1545 switching tank cars at Brenntag Pacific in Chandler AZ
Last stop of the day is at Brenntag Pacific to do some tank car switching. I get in position to catch the action. The train is blocking traffic on Chandler Blvd. for the first 15 minutes of this operation. So when they pull forward to let traffic clear, I head for home. I’ve been out following the crew for over 2 hours today after working a full shift. Sorry I didn’t get the whole job. There’s still some good action on what I did catch. Hope you enjoy watching.
Watch your volume... Loud brakes !!!

Not sure why they were using 2 engines. This was the first time I’ve seen that myself. Maybe a new law requires more than one engine now. I will ask if there are 2 engines next time out. Original video was a little over 15 minutes long. So didn’t edit too much out of it. They also came back to finish the job after traffic cleared, but I had already left for home by then.

Two locomotives usually just so they can have a cab at each end and avoid running long hood forward. They certainly don't need the power, and there's no law against having just one locomotive. The only relevant law I can think of is that there's a speed restriction of 20mph (I think it's 20) through grade crossings if the lead locomotive doesn't have working ditchlights. UP 1545 has ditchlights on both ends; the other locomotive probably has them too, so that's probably not the reason. And on this branch, they're probably not running much faster than 20mph anyway.

@@silverado15 "cant believe how long they block the road" They could have run beyond the crossing to allow the gates to lift. The problem is that shoving across a grade crossing is dangerous because of idiots running the gates, so it's safer to just keep the crossing blocked if you have to run back and forth across it. Of course, this creates a vicious cycle: people are more likely to run the gates if they think the gates will be down longer, so the train blocks the road longer to avoid people running the gates.
Very nice video is this the chandler branch line and nice geep on point

Well I guess we know how rail cars get flat spots on their wheels. I'm surprised they push the cars with the brakes still set.
Excellent video I got 7 new video
They didn't release the brakes on the white tank car. When they pull it out and back it up the wheels aren't turning. Funny.

Just went back and watched it again and you are right. That’s strange. You have a sharp eye. A lot of times they put the brakes on when moving cars but never saw the wheels not turning.
Really, I don't see why they didn't let traffic go by earlier, they ran back and COUNLTLESS times, the crossing is right there at the switch, and I seen also THAT, they didn't even release the brakes of I could see on that white tank car, it's wheels wasn't even turning as they backed into that other tank, at approximately - (6:22) that's how you make FLAT WHEELS!! ALTHOUGH THE DISTANT WASNT GREAT/FAR BUT STILL.

Yeah, it must be frustrating for the cars waiting, when the train isn't blocking the crossing but the gates don't go up. They don't pull far enough back to trigger the gates. And you're right about the brakes too. Not sure why they do it like that. I appreciate the input on this video !!!

it certainly is a bad look... however blocking a crossing for up to 15 minutes is well within acceptable railroad time boundaries... but again, it's a BAD look, and FEEL... i was a switchman and blocked a few crossings switching out customers and i can see right away that this customer is in a really bad spot with their switch falling right on top of the crossing... and worse yet sometimes the circuit that activates the crossing when coming off of the customer track is literally right on top of the crossing... that can be frustrating as you inch and inch forward slooowly trying to find that frickn' circuit... the best(safest) way to switch that place is to activate the crossing then hold it, make a few key passes then get off it... wait a few minutes to at least let the affected vehicles go through then start it all over again... btw engrs HATE it when the crossing is blocked for a long time and a move puts them right in the middle of the crossing... you should see the DEATH STARES... yikes!!!!... i worked with a engr he would "scrunch" down in the seat all you could see was two hands on the controls afraid to "face the music"

@@25mfd What's the reason for switching cars with the handbrake on? It seems to be done routinely, so I figure there must be a reason for it.
@beeble2003

The problem with unblocking the crossing is that it makes the switchman interact more with moving traffic, and risks some idiot running the gates when you shove back to to close the crossing again.
