    I live in BC and the Public Health Officer, Dr Bonnie Henry has made a difference to how we react to COVID-19. Her calm voice has been on TV almost every day since this all started. She has created at atmosphere of “being calm, being safe and being calm”. Nigel Howard, the ASL interpreter has created an interest in sign language, and he does tend to steal the show sometimes! We here in BC are very fortunate to have these two taking care of us.

    Forgive my ignorance....I know very little about ASL - but why is the predominant expression on the translator’s face, one of surprise? Is that particular facial expression a personal stylistic choice, or is it something that is taught and practiced while learning ASL?

  • @bartwilson2513

    @bartwilson2513

    4 жыл бұрын

    Facial expressions are critical to sign language and can help relay tone and in some instances change the meaning of the phrase. Not every translator is as expressive, though they are sought after. It also makes it more interesting to watch/“listen” to for deaf folks.

  • @D.Y.X.

    @D.Y.X.

    4 жыл бұрын

    I only took a couple of ASL classes in college, so I'm no expert, but facial expressions are the equivalent of grammar in written or spoken language. For example, when we ask a question, usually our inflection goes up at the end of the sentence to signify that it is, in fact, a question. ASL does that through facial expressions; different expressions - mouth movements, eyebrow movements, etc. - equate to different uses of grammar. Usually, from what I remember, squinting signifies a question, or it can convey seriousness depending on what is being signed. Wide eyes typically means surprise or concern. There are many more uses of facial expressions for grammar, and even tone, but that is all I remember.

    There's nothing dignified about this bitch. She recently admitted in one of these ridiculous charades that many of the decisions they make are politically based. She's now saying the quiet part out loud. She had the stones this whole time to tell people "we are all in this together" when talking to small businesses she forced to close even though she is one of the highest paid public servants in the country and hasn't missed a paycheque. All of these people can go right to hell.
