UniFi Express - How fast is it when it’s meshed??

I am super excited by the Unifi Express Mesh system and they are "almost" perfect. Check out my speed tests and I test the mesh to see how fast it goes. Is this a good solution for someone who doesn't have wires in their home, but wants to use Unifi? Let's find out!!

Have 2 ux in mesh and love the ecosystem and gui. Can wait for your mesh test👍🏼

Thank you for this. I've got a dream router and a 6 Pro is a small house but annoyingly parts of my office are dead zones. I want one of these to place in the room nextdoor that gets great WiFi to serve the office as no scope for wiring another AP easily.

Nice test, but could you do it again using iPerf so that you’re actually measuring the network speed that they are capable of? And with a wired connection to both devices. That way the only variable is the distance between them, and the speed of your Internet connection doesn’t affect the results. It would be nice to know if meshing these can outperform Powerline adapters.

Thanks for doing this test. I have a mesh system with a UDM and a BeaconHD. The BeaconHD has always shown as too far away in the Network app (-87 or so). I bought an Express to bridge the gap between the UDM and the BeaconHD. Now all access points are reading -55 go -60db. UDM to Express to BeaconHD. Don’t know if this really helped anything other than the db signal strength.

I really think that anytime you can get your signal strength up, you will have a better overall experience. You are adding an extra "hop" for the devices connected to the beacon, but they should be able to communicate better I would think. You will have to report back and share your experience after the change!

Would two or three of these connected to the main express be considered okay for a small to medium sized house as a mesh system? I am unable to run Ethernet cables anywhere.

  • @ethernetblueprint

They could be, yes. However, with them being dual band, and having limited hardware onboard, your speeds might not be super awesome. What internet speed do you currently have?

Also, keep in mind that the Express can only manage 4 additional unifi devices so be careful if you need additional devices like a switch...

use channel 80 , set max transmit power to all express, doing this i was able to have 780mbits in mesh

Have you tried these as APs? I have one and am really impressed, but I also have a Google WiFi system with each AP wired in. I'm considering replacing the GW points with a couple more of these UniFi Express devices and wiring them into the existing ports

  • @ethernetblueprint

As a hard wired solution, I really like these and would definitely replace GW points with them. Using them as a wireless mesh system, I think they lack a little bit and need to be triband to get better wireless performance between the WiFi points.

Do you think you would’ve gotten better results on 2,4 ghz setup? Your initial internet speed isn’t faster enough to out pace the 2.4 Wi-Fi and it would’ve been a stronger signal

I have bought a Udm wall by spending some 1200 bucks. Also 2 unify accespoint 6e enterprise version one unify express, after a massive wifi hacking by some unknown remote actions. originally the ISP gave their own modem (Speedprt pro with hybrid option from telekom). But then I want to use only Udm wall as main modem and router. I plugged in the DSL cable to Udm wall, but nothing is being recognised...I am not a professional, but I really want this to work and have a secure connection.pleae help..where am I doing wrong..I want to give up the ISP modem

I agree.. That is one of the problems. And the testing I was doing was just 1 device connected... if you had a lot of devices, the results would be slower! Thanks for weighing in!

They ruined that with the new U7 Pro being only 2x2 on all bands compared to 4x4 on 5GHz on the U6 Pro.
