    I think that's the point of his character. In the film, at least. He's not a superhero, and he doesn't need to be for Amalthea to fall for him. He's just a good man. I also love that he offers to write Madruk a reference. He's not above menial pencil-pushing. 😂

    They managed to make Amalthea so ethereally beautiful. The character designer Lester Abrams is not known for his beautiful women, so I suspect the Japanese animation director had something to do with it. She does have an anime quality about her.

    There's a part in the book where the guards talk about how Amalthea used to have a quality about her where she shone with so much pure goodness that it made the dreariest room beautiful for being lit by her light... but somehow her unearthly radiance had dimmed, and though she was still beautiful, it somehow now made the room look uglier by comparison. They didn't know it, but what they were noticing was how her Unicorn-nature-in-human-form was fading into the mere beauty of a mortal woman.

    Everyone talking about the scene where Amalthea stares down Mabruk, but nobody talks about her bit with King Haggard right after. He walks up to gauge her reaction, and she just says a firm “Don’t!” Then KING HAGGARD backs off and his voice softens to “I will not touch you.” I absolutely love the way that Amalthea’s Unicorn presence brings out something almost akin to human in Haggard. He softens, drops his guard for mere seconds around her and becomes a man again. I love it.

How could a man be driven by such hate to take away all the unicorns from the world and into the sea. Well some of those questions have been answered here. But I still wonder... what was this man like in his prime? How fearsome was he in a battle, what sort of king was he? How did he claim his way to power Who was haggard before he became the recluse he was. Well we know he has a son so he mustve also had a spouse at one point too. Did he love her? Or was it as loveless one or estranged as his relationship with his very own son? I would love to see a backstory to king haggard... but alas that will never be.

    @trustmeits610pm2

    Well, having read the book, I can tell you what *is* known about Haggard. Haggard's castle was built by a witch (who cursed it and the surrounding lands when she was not given the payment she was promised.) So we know that young Haggard was a welsher. Then again he admits that he did not pay because he couldn't... but because he WANTED his castle to be cursed. He slighted the witch on purpose. Knowing full well what she would do in response. His reasoning could have been greed or maybe he thought being cursed would be interesting. Hard to say. Haggard is also a penny pincher that would make Ebenezer Scrooge blush. He stalked the streets at night in the nearby town of Hagsgate, picking up loose change on the ground and stealing it from fountains. That's right. He was THAT greedy. Or maybe it was just a compulsion. Like kleptomania. It was on one of these nightly excursions that he found an abandoned baby (Lir). In his never ending quest for happiness (Haggard has never truly been happy) he decided to see if fatherhood would bring him happiness. He said it did. For a very short time. Then he lost interest. Still, he never disowned Lir and made him his legitimate heir. It's also noteworthy that Schmendrick as a magician *did* bring Haggard some happiness. Although not directly. Haggard never asked Schmendrick to perform any real magic. Instead, he forced his new magician to do all the cheapjack card tricks and low illusions of magic-less magicians. The tricks themselves weren't what Haggard liked. You see Schmendrick hated being treated like a children's party clown. Since Haggard knew he hated being nothing more than some desperate street performer, Haggard took his enjoyment thereby. Which is kind of messed up but hey, that's Haggard for you.

    The King is so weird. Like, does he even have emotions? Truly? It seems like he just locked his heart away. It makes me feel like he might have something psychological going on where he just can’t be happy, vs not find something that makes him happy.

    Some folks cannot find the joys of life to be of any comfort to their hollow hearts. Haggard represents all the depression of the world. And that no amount of human interaction, effection or entertainment can lift it. His only joy is seeing the unicorns he has gathered run in and out on the ocean tide. They make him feel young again despite his age. It represents how some people take too much of a good thing that they are consequently robing it from others. He would keep the most sacred and valuable thing in the world to himself so he can have the only joy he feels in life.

    This may be too shallow of an analysis, but his inability to be happy seems to come from him being a king who can have (and has had) anything he could ever desire... nothing has any value to him because it's all so easily obtained. He also treats human relationships in the same way as his superficial desires; for instance, he views his son in an oddly neutral way--it is neither a loving or contentious relationship. He treats Lir like some random guy; it's as if he is bored of any pleasures parenthood could bring him

    @@stawnpawnthe3rd991 Indeed, he even stated that Lir is not even his real son. Just a baby he found on a peasants doorstep. He took him in an raised him in the small hopes that he might feel the joy of fatherhood. It was pleasant at first, but it soon faded for him. Now Lir is little more than a stray dog that he keeps around for no reason other than to be a guard for his castle.

    According to the book, Mabruk and Schmendrick have met before. Schmendrick is the failed student of the wizard Nikos (the greatest wizard of their age), who is friends with Mabruk. Nikos infamously casts a spell to make Schmendrick immortal. Why does he do this? To ensure that Schmendrick eventually becomes a great wizard. Eventually. At some point. Nikos didn't know when or how it would happen. Nikos wants this because a failure like Schmendrick is a stain upon his reputation (it makes Nikos look bad to have trained a failure) and because he genuinely believed Schmendrick had vast potential. Unfortunately a human life is far too short for Schmendrick to realize that potential because he sucks so bad at magic. Mabruk calls Schmendrick "The Runeless Wonder" and "Nikos' Folly". The immortality is supposed to end when Schmendrick learns to stop being such a screwup. The movie doesn't mention Schmendrick's immortality. Which is broken at the end of the story anyway. After all, he becomes a true wizard and is allowed to grow old with Molly Grue. (Yes they get together in the book.)

    Judgment that is not physically, mentally, and spiritually beneficial is useless therefore has no true value. Without judgment progress cannot be made. For no one can express or receive love or any other desired emotion in its entirety if the don't know themselves. We are all not created equal however we all have a equal obligation to living up to the pleasure, potential, and responsibility of femininity and masculinity. So do your best to become physically fit, mentally sound, and spiritually balanced being able to express physical freedom. Which can be accomplished through clean air, water, fitness, and high sources of nutrition organic and non-genetically modified would be best. Plus formal education or real hands-on experience. When one learns the body's capabilities and limitations by fully engaging with all their senses to their extreme limits in the most efficient way that is humanly possible. The subconscious then begins to naturally subconsciously systematically coincide with the mind-body souls spirit mother Earth and all the various different forms of life that live within this world and the most efficient way that is humanly possible. Thus yielding the best spiritual kickback for one's efforts accomplishments experiences. You might want to take these points to heart Considering the simple logic if life is not free, why the hell would death be any cheaper? It's not the question the common, basic, average, normal man or woman may be able to wonder is what is the spiritual cost to one's own soul and spirit for freely living dying off having only used the smallest percentage of a fraction of the true potential they are first born with. Not to add insult to injury for the last hundred and 50 years or so the mass majority of the population has been living and dying yielding the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the beginning of life only getting worse. And that has nothing to do with everybodys so-called charming personality and everything to do with the standards of quality pertaining to our air, water, foods, landscapes, working/living environment, every day home products, habitats, and ecosystems. Which is ignorant beyond retarded (no offense to any disabled people.) When you consider for the last 490 years Give or take we have had the manpower woman influence or vice versa to have created clean high paying jobs from coast-to-coast globally that would improve upon and maintain the quality of our life in such a manner. That the mass majority of the population from coast-to-coast globally would naturally, gradually, and systematically start becoming stronger, smarter, healthier, happier, better off physically, mentally, and financially possibly spiritually then the previous generation. Now I would like to resurrect the wish and prayer I made prior to my 8th birthday which was to be held spiritually accountable to the statements I proclaim to the way I'm living personally and professionally. I guarantee you never see or hear another body, man or woman in power, persons of legal, religious authority, or leaders ever freely validate the statements they proclaim with that level of certainty one reason they don't have the best interest of the majority of the population's needs at heart a another reason could be they cum from a bloodline of cowards or simply have a lifestyle that suggests, confirms, and validates them as being feebleminded physically inadequate submissive subservient which it doesn't get any worse than that. One is genetically inherited and the other is a simple generic learned behavior. Quite possible to be a combination of these worst-case scenarios nonetheless either way it is physically, mentally, and spiritually useless to freely live and die in such a low quality manner. Especially if that ignorant stupidity, weak, lonely desperation stems from being soft, lazy, out of shape, over fed, undernourished, overworked, and underpaid with a dirty low-paying job that comes from outdated power sources, inferior materials, poisonous, toxic substances, pesticides, and chemicals that never change their killing composition. Which means simpletons whether it is a solid, liquid, or burnt off into our airways atmosphere as a vapor it is always going to be poisonous, debilitating, and deadly to the body at the same time polluting, corrupting, and devastating to mother Earth and all the various different forms of life that live within this world. There is no cash profit to be made in the demise of the planet. Thanks to those dirty low-paying jobs we are in the mist of environmental financial global collapse. The good news souls and spirits have paid out are picking up the tab on the end results of those dirty low-paying jobs. The even better news that the common, basic, average, normal man woman may be able to comprehend his souls and spirits have been are being managed, directed, maintained, and implemented with all the disease, sickness, illness, pain, suffering, injury, abuse, neglect, hunger, addiction, sadness, anger, and hyper- aggressive violence. That has been allowed to occur manifesting throughout the history of mankind into what it is today thanks to people like Donald Trump who have the false belief if the mass majority of the population is at their worst they will feel less afraid inferior to the true potentials of love, honor, and the creation of life. Here's the deal you're either part of the world solutions or exacerbating the planets problems there is no safe in between. Either way no matter how you look at it each and every moment of every life has been spiritually accounted for. S.R.F.
