I once went to a Western-themed wedding for a couple from my congregation, and the bride was big into theatrics. When it came time for the objections, someone else from the congregation stood up in full cowgirl gear and "objected", and there was this big fake shoot-out between the objector and the bride, groom, and the officiator. With sound effects and accompanying music. It was wild as fuck and I'll never forget it

Since there's probably other people watching that might not know: one of the reasons gay marriage was a big deal was due to the legal implications of marriage. If you don't have that marital status, you can be refused visitation to and information on a hospitalized partner for example, and in those cases the family is often contacted to have decision-making for the hospitalized individual - which isn't always a very desirable thing in the queer community. Marriage is also a very important status for a lot of government-ran programs, taxes, etc. So it was more to do with gay relationships being refused the same rights and privileges as straight relationships.

And as a matter of principle it is not the place of a state supposedly based on democracy to limit the will of the people who it serves, when their actions do no harm. Even Ayn Rand, a homophobe among other nasty things, supported gay marriage because it aligned with her values; if only the Republican (the name is a joke) politicians who base their ideology on hers weren't so hypocritical in their continued attack on LGBT+ rights.

Totally agree of your points. However, as many have pointed out, the legality of gay marriage has served only a limited population within our LGBTQ community, especially the already wealthy ones. We still have a long way to go as it's still legal in many states to deny employment, housing, and other social services based on gender and sexual orientation.

This episode was a miss for me. Marriage and weddings are two very different things and I was surprised to see two grownups completely miss this and conflate them, even if it was for jokes. And yes, in theory gay marriage is about civil rights. In practice, it’s more a bid to secure a place in the middle class (as the above commenter pointed out).

One that comes to mind that is practiced today is the Tibetan practice of fraternal polyandry. There’s a great article by Melvyn C. Goldstein called “When Brothers Share a Wife” on this topic.

I love how Trixie fluffed up the intro and Katya not only ran with it, she swung it onto her back and was ready to distract/challenge anyone from noticing. That's a true gal pal.

This is one of my absolute Favorite episodes. Love "go home delicious," victor victoria victor, rooptop, "which rooptop was it though?", "who would play her?", the cast of Twister in your wedding party/hostage situation/murder mystery, my mom and dad Helen and Denise, potato gun in the face, Katya smoking outside at her wedding. Nonstop. They never stall out.

I have to praise the editor and the graphic designer. This is so funny, you're doing the best work in the episode! Great sense of humor! You are indispensable in this.

on a serious note, a older gay couple told me that the marriage thing was more about money, kids, and house stuff. if a gay spouse dies, without marriage there is little in the way of leaving everything to the other spouse and people lost their houses to this and even can’t have full custody of their children since next of kin would the the dead spouses family. idk

But we don't want a big wedding.. But if we do something small, people will get mad cause they werent invited. So basically you're in between a wall and a sword xD

I think since you made a comment about the big pressure you're feeling and how you don't want a big wedding on a KZread video on drag queens talking about weddings, then you probably just don't want to dissapoint your friends and family, but it's your special occasion with your loved one and I'm sure the one you want to marry doesn't want you to be stressed or feel like you have to because of expectations. Just do you love ! I mean your friends and family love you for you, if they're a little disappointed that's not on you but on them for having such expectations for your special moment and I'm sure they'll understand whatever you choose to do. If they support you two, they'll support you through having a small wedding too ❤️
